What's it Like to Get
The Call?
It's the moment every aspiring author dreams about: one day your phone rings and you learn that an editor loves your manuscript and is offering a contract. Romance novelists refer to that thrilling event as "getting The Call". What's it like to get The Call, and what happens after that? How does a manuscript become a book? For the curious and for those who are waiting for their phones to ring, here's my story....
Late August, 2001 I typed, "The End" on the last page of the final draft of my manuscript. Some people say that's unprofessional. Of course the editor will have to strike it, because those words won't be printed in the book. But I needed to see them on my last page. It was my reward for accomplishing what I had set out to do. August 31, 2001 I sent a query letter with a synopsis to the publisher I was targeting. I had been writing with "Love Inspired" in mind, so I had nailed the word-count and the tone for that line. (Don't bother querying an editor unless you're sure what you've written will fit her line.) Also, it's very important for an unpublished writer to have a complete manuscript ready to go when she queries. Often the editor will request only a "partial" (usually meaning the first three chapters), but if she wants the "full," you'd better be able to zap it back to her before she loses interest. (It's okay to take 2-3 weeks to do a final polish, but I wouldn't wait any longer.)

Simpleness is another aesthetic preference, not an information display strategy, not a guide to clarity. What we seek instead is a rich texture of data, a comparative context, an understanding of complexity revealed with an economy of means.
Edward R. Tufte, Envisioning Information, Graphics Press 1990 OK, so Professor Tufte is writing about the graphical display of information, such as in a chart or graph or a drawing of some sort intended to display (drum roll) information. Isn't that what a novel is? Words are data. If you can do what Professor Tufte has so compellingly suggested, you can write a novel that gets published.
But that's not easy! Nope, it sure ain't.
If it were easy, getting published would be no big deal.

Grab a coffee, sit back and enjoy a chat with romance author Toni Blake. Road to Romance reviewer/interviewer Barb Hicks recently spoke with romance author Toni Blake about her writing, her inspiration and what's coming up next. BH When did you know you wanted to write romances? TB I'd been writing off and on for most of my life when, in 1995, a close friend and critique partner gave me Jenny Crusie's first two Temptations and said, "You should be writing romance." At the time, I hadn't read a romance for many years and was sadly out of touch with what a romance novel really *was*, but as soon as I read those books, I knew I had finally found the right place to focus my writing. BH What authors, if any, influenced your desire to write? If not writers, was there anyone to encourage you? TB I have a friend whose quite well known in literary and poetry circles - Sherman Alexie - whose prose really lifted my desire to write to a higher level back in the early 90's. As far as writing romance goes, though, as mentioned above, Jennifer Crusie's work really influenced me, and Teresa Medeiros's as well. As for encouragement, I've always been fortunate enough to be surrounded by supportive people. My husband, my parents, my friends, and all the other writers I've met along the way have always been encouraging from the beginning. BH How long did it take you to get your first book published and how many rejections did you get?

Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine a top publisher offering me that kind of money and the kind of praise that comes with it. In fact, I wasn’t thinking about the money at all. $4,000 for my first book? $55,000 for a multibook contract? $97,500 offered in one simple phone call? That was someone else’s life, not mine. You see, I had no formal writing education. I went to a normal high school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and from there took secretarial jobs, a job as a flight attendant, and eventually a well-paid job as a real-estate investment manager. It’s when I finally started to make money that I realized how wrong everything was.

    http://www.bookpage.com/9803bp/romance/roundup.html
Review by Sandy Huseby M arch blows in one of romance writing's freshest voices, now making her hardcover debut.
    Love's a funny thing
Tell Me Lies , by Jennifer Crusie, is a masterstroke of wry examination of truth and lies. Little white lies, big whoppers, even self-deception come under Crusie's comedic look at what happens when a self-described nice girl decides to go "bad." Not that heroine Maddie Faraday doesn't have just cause. Her day starts with the discovery of black lace lingerie (not hers) under the seat of her husband's car. Then her old, first love shows up in town asking questions about her husband's finances. Hmmm. What's a woman to do? In the case of Crusie's crackling great tale of life, love, and lies in small town Frog Point, Ohio, Maddie decides to demand a divorce. In the process, she discovers that she is much more than wife and mother, she is a person able to cope with incredible crises and emerge triumphant. Maddie Faraday is a woman whose vulnerabilities and strength of character will make you cheer her on. Crusie writes with a voice that is brutally funny, alternately in-your-face raucous and so poignant you'll laugh with tears streaming down your cheeks. She transcends comparison, and this tale is a pure gem.

    7. AOTW: In the publishing business, do you feel there is a stigma attached to romance novels and, by extension, romance authors? Are the subgenres that are being used to define novels today - romantic suspense, historical romance, romantic mystery - an attempt to eliminate any stigma attached to the romance genre?
    Jane Feather:
I don't see how one can stigmatize a genre that arguably outsells most of the other forms of popular fiction. If there was a stigma it would attach as much to the readers of these books as to the authors and the industry itself. If I remember rightly, Stephen King spoke to this a couple of months ago. His point, as I recall, was that those who despise popular fiction are closing their minds to significant aspects of their own world. They're out of touch with the way their world works. It's like saying I only ever listen to Mozart; who are these Beatles? I have been asked on several occasions when I'm going to write a "proper" book. It's a question I dismiss with the contempt it deserves. If the questioners had ever written a work of fiction they would never even formulate such a question, and if they haven't, they don't have the right to ask it.
I'm assuming that subgenres are a useful marketing tool. They enable the industry to tell which aspect of the genre is the particular flavor of the month. I have my doubts as to how reliable that is. My first historical was initially declined on the grounds that it was "essentially a Regency, and you can't give Regencies away nowadays." It didn't take long for that to turn around, and I spent the next few years writing nothing but Regencies because someone believed that that was what the market demanded.
