BellaOnline's Romance Novels Editor Erin McCarthy: The Interview Hello, and welcome back! I have another special, pre-holiday treat for all of you: an interview with Erin McCarthy! Being a fan of good erotic romance, I've been reading her stuff since her first novella for Brava, and I haven't been disappointed by picking up everything since then. Her latest is
Houston, We Have a Problem (Brava), and she has
Mouth to Mouth due out in January. Enjoy!
Bella: How long have you been writing, and what led you to want to write romance?
Erin McCarthy: I've been writing since first grade. *g* Seriously, I have wanted to be a writer since then. I wrote a story about a witch in the first grade and it won a district-wide writing contest for my age level. When I first started writing as an adult, I was writing what is now called women's fiction-relationship stories that didn't necessarily have a happy ending.

Leigh Greenwood: Real Men Write Romance
Leigh Greenwood (Photo courtesy of Leigh Greenwood) Romance knows no gender. Just ask Harold Lowry, who under the pen name of Leigh Greenwood , writes some of the most romantic novels around. This bestselling author contends he never planned to write until his wife introduced him to the romances of Georgette Heyer. The books struck a chord, and with the help of his local Romance Writers of America (RWA) chapter, the one-time music teacher carved out a new career. But Leigh Greenwood remained loyal to his literary and organizational roots. Recently, RWA members returned the favor by electing Lowry as their first president of the new millennium. For Lowry, the experience gave a whole new meaning to the phrase "getting the call." Crescent Blues: What does it take to be a guy in a woman's world? Leigh Greenwood: Actually it has been very easy for me. I went to my first meeting of a local RWA chapter in 1985 and was accepted immediately. At no time was I aware that I was the only man present. Maybe I was too focused on trying to learn why my books didn't sell to notice, but I don't think so. I've always been accepted at the local and national level. Members seemed genuinely happy for my success. RWA is the most warm, supportive, accepting group of people in the world.

Key Note speakers include such names as Bob Mayer, Catherine Coulter and Jennifer Crusie
Catherine Coulter - Catherine has managed to accomplished what few authors do write cross-genre successfully. Obtaining her MA in early 19th century European history, Catherine began her career writing historical romantic fiction. Atop the New York Times best sellers list more than thirty times, she branched out to romantic suspense with equal success. Catherine continues to write two novels per year, one historical and one suspense. Don't miss her keynote speech at Sunday brunch or her Clean Writing workshop on Saturday.
Julia Quinn - Julia Quinn didn't originally intend to write romance novels for a living. When she was in college, she spent her summers working for Let's Go: Europe , traveling to Crete and Cyprus as an intrepid (and underpaid) researcher/writer. Later she decided to be a physician and even spent three months at the Yale School of Medicine before realizing that doctoring didn't hold a candle to romance writing. Romance fans everywhere are relieved by her choice, and she continues to delight her readers. We are pleased and honored to have Julia Quinn as one of Spring Into Romance 2006 KeyNotes. Don't Miss Coffee with Julia on Sunday Morning
Bob Mayer A native of New York City , Bob has ridden the USA Today's best selling list consistently with his Area 51 books. An author of contemporary fiction, thrillers, science fiction and non-fiction, Bob brings his fascinating background as a West Point graduate, former Green Beret, instructor and writer to the table for his speech at Friday night's welcoming dinner. Love in the Library:
Reading and Writing Romance eCrab At the Annual MLA Conference 2000 held in the Sheraton Towson North recently, the preconference "Love in the Library: Reading and Writing Romance" got off to a slightly delayed start due to traffic accidents and gridlock.
The delay did not seem to diminish participants' enthusiasm and joyful anticipation of the all-day pre-conference, which included lunch with the published authors, a book signing event, as well as a stuffed "goody bag" of promotional items, including a romance novel (many autographed), and a copy of "Romantic Times" magazine. Drawings were held for several additional items, including proofs, original galleys, and two exquisitely packaged book baskets created by Binnie Syril Braunstein. The baskets were donated by Washington Romance Writers, a chapter of Romance Writers of America.
Sponsored as a joint effort of the MLA 2000 Conference Committee, the Public Services Division of MLA, and the Washington Romance Writers Association, this pre-conference was a rare, challenging, and very entertaining presentation.
Facilitator Binnie Syril Braunstein, of WRW, herself a former librarian and a successful romance author, deftly guided the program, which flowed effortlessly from topic to topic, and author to author.

I don't write romance novels, any more than Tom Clancy writes legal thrillers. Yes, I write about love and relationships and Tom Clancy writes a thriller, but what I do would not be accepted by romance publishers, since the romance genre has numerous requirements and I don't satisfy any of them. I write love stories, a completely different genre.

    An Interview with
    Judith Ivory
    by Margaret Fraser
Judith Ivory is the author of five highly acclaimed historical romances. Affaire de Coeur has called her, "an incredible talent." Romantic Times calls her, "dazzling," "subtle," "thought-provoking," "brilliant." Bliss , written under the name Judy Cuevas, was a 1996 nominee for Romance Writers of America's highest honor, the RITA. A professional, full-time writer since the early eighties, Ms. Ivory began her career writing non-fiction for national and international parenting magazines. In 1987, she sold her first novel to Zebra Books. Her next three historical romances written under the name Judy Cuevas were published by the Putnam Berkley Publishing Group: Black Silk published in 1991, Bliss in 1995, and Dance in 1996. Her fifth, Beast , is an April 1997 release from Avon Books, with another to follow. Ms. Ivory holds two degrees in mathematics and spent one "glorious" summer studying English literature at the University of Cambridge in Cambridge, England. She has taught in the Dade County public schools, at the University of Miami, has led writing seminars for national writers organizations and the YMCA's Miami Writes program. She has also been a featured speaker at various book fairs, including the prestigious Miami Book Fair International. Ms. Ivory resides in Miami with her two children. She loves to travel, having been all over this continent, down into South America twice, and to Europe close to a dozen times.

    194. Become A Published Romance Writer
How to write a proposal for a romance novel that an editor will love.
    http://www.fabjob.com/romance-writer-sample.html
How to Get Published Free Sample The information on this page is an excerpt from the FabJob Guide to Become a Romance Writer . It is only a small sample of the valuable information contained in the 127 page complete guide. How to Write a Proposal an Editor will Love "A common problem is that an author will send in a proposal that has no spark. They've done everything right-except imbue the story with spirit."
    - Brenda Chin, Editor at Harlequin One of the most important parts of your proposal is the synopsis . A synopsis is a short recap of what happens in your book. You sum up the story in 2-10 pages , hitting the high points. Think of the blurb on the back cover of a book, only with more details. I believe a winning synopsis can get you a request for your entire book. The problem is, where do you even start with a synopsis? How do you sum up 50,000 or 100,000 words in 10 or fewer pages? People often dread writing a synopsis. They moan and groan and gripe and whine. Why do I have to do this? I wrote the book, can't they just read that? Well, actually, no. Again, editors are really busy. Many have offices that look like they are carpeted in manuscripts. I remember reading an article by Malle Vallick of Harlequin Duets where she said her dream is to be able to see her carpet and what color it is. She vaguely remembers it as being pink. Imagine, that is the mountain of work with only proposals to read through. Read the whole manuscript? Dream on!
