    Write a Lesson Plan Guide
How to Develop a Lesson Plan
We have received several questions regarding how to write a good lesson plan. We went ahead and asked our experts, did some research, and have included some tips and guidelines below.
To begin, ask yourself three basic questions: Where are your students going?
How are they going to get there?
How will you know when they've arrived? Then begin to think about each of the following categories which form the organization of the plan. While planning, use the questions below to guide you during each stage. Goals Goals determine purpose, aim, and rationale for what you and your students will engage in during class time. Use this section to express the intermediate lesson goals that draw upon previous plans and activities and set the stage by preparing students for future activities and further knowledge acquisition. The goals are typically written as broad educational or unit goals adhering to State or National curriculum standards. What are the broader objectives, aims, or goals of the unit plan/curriculum?

Title: Successful Paragraphs Author: Cathy Baker Adapted from Martha Adams; Jefferson Elementary, Everette, WA and Mitzi Merrill; Staff Development Specialist, Snohomish, WA Grade Level: Subject: Language Arts, Writing Overview: When 4th - 6th graders are asked to write a paragraph, the result is often a few short, choppy sentences beginning with the, an, a, or I. This activity guides students through the writing process for a successful five-sentence paragraph with varied sentence beginnings. Repeating this process frequently with many, varied topics teaches students to use variety to create interesting paragraphs. Objective: As a result of this activity, the students will each write a five-sentence paragraph with varied sentence beginnings, correct spelling and punctuation, and appropriate margins. Resources/Materials: Teacher sample, paper and pencil for students. Activities and Procedures: Each step in this activity should be modeled by the teacher and result in a sample paragraph for the students.

A cooperative learning activity in which students identify with Earth, Air, Fire, or Water.
    MATERIALS:
    • paper pencil art/modeling supplies matches sample of Soil, Water balloons or a pinwheel
    METHOD:
  • You might begin this as an introduction to the topic of Chemistry as a branch of science or, a unit on elements. Consider a reading on alchemy and how early alchemists tried long and hard to transmute less costly elements into more valuable ones. Aristotle might be mentioned as an early scientist involved. Students get into 4 groups each representing one of the early elements - Earth, Air, Fire, or Water After some time to brainstorm, students report on characteristics of the element they represent, whether it can best be described by 2 of the following 4 properties: dry, wet, hot or cold, and how early alchemists might have tried to change these, and later other elements from one to the other. Depending on the grade level, students could use matches, a beaker of water, soil samples, a balloon full of air (or empty) and or develop charts or posters illustrating their findings and propositions. A group I did this with presented their results in the form of a rap style poem.

    http://teacherlink.ed.usu.edu/tlresources/units/Byrnes-celebrations/Earth Day- H
Mini-Unit Subtopic: Earth Day Grade levels: 4th through 6th Author: Becky Johnson Background: Our planet is a complex system of land, air, and water. Living things depend on each other and this system for existence. Over the thousands of years since life has existed on the earth, it has undergone some changes. The following are some of these changes: Many species became extinct before mankind made its appearance, however, since humans have existed on the earth, the extinction rate has risen dramatically. More than 4,000 species are currently considered threatened. Plant and animal life become endangered for many reasons. Forest depletion, hunting, and pollution are the most obvious factors. When an animal becomes endangered, dozens of other species can also become endangered. For example, elephants disappeared from southern Africa about 80 years ago because of hunters. Elephants continue to be hunted, mainly for their costly ivory tusks. The endangerment of elephants also has endangered such animals in their area as wildebeest and antelope who live off of the open-grassland which elephants create by eating their way through a jungle. Oxygen-producing trees and plants are being cut down for the purpose of growing foods, grazing livestock, making paper products, etc. The cutting down of forests puts forest wildlife at risk and decreases the oxygen in the air. It also defaces the natural beauty of the planet. Tropical rain forests are often cleared for farming. The soil in these forests are poor in nutrients, and within a few years the crops fail and the land is abandoned. New forests are cleared.
