    PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

Class times will often be divided into two halves: a presentation of the week's materials and challenges and then a work session in students might separate to carry out individual work or present and discuss their own work. DETERMINATION OF GRADE AND REQUIREMENTS:
Half your grade will be determined by your participation and attendance. Attendance is crucial in a once-a-week format research seminar format. The other half of your grade will be based on the weekly (approximately 12) projects and exercises. These will vary in weight according to the difficulty and time involved. The final requirement for this course is a draft of your research paper that reflects the course's lessons, and final drafts of some of the reports assigned and revised during the term. It is important for students to remain in contact with me about their projects and consult with me individually throughout the term.

British History Links Course Requirements Office Hours Writing history is about making decisions. Historians choose from a broad range of subjects, selecting those they think are most important. They choose source materials carefully, assessing evidence that may support or contradict their arguments. And they choose ways to write, balancing respect for their subjects with the needs of their audience. -William Keller Storey, Writing History: A Guide for Students (Oxford, 1999), 1 Schedule of Classes and Assignments : Reading should be completed before the class assigned; Assignment due dates are given below and on assignment sheet handouts: week 1. Introduction. "Professor Trevor-Roper tells us that the historian `ought to love the past.' This is a dubious injunction. To love the past may easily be an expression of the nostalgic romanticism of old men of old societies, a symptom of loss of faith and interest in the present or future." [Edward Hallett Carr, What Is History?

MSc in History and Computing The MSc in History and Computing is a taught course which provides specialised research training in the application of computing methods to substantive problems in social, economic and political history. It aims to give students a sound methodological grounding in the use of computers in history. The course takes 12 months of study (24 months part-time).  The MSc is recognised by the ESRC as a master's course providing research training for students pursuing a Ph.D. The MSc will suit students with backgrounds in history or a related subject who wish training in the application of computers to history, and who wish to pursue a research degree or another career (including teaching) in which knowledge of computers may be of assistance. Emphasis is placed on the use of software rather than on programming. No prior computing experience is required. Students taking the course may choose instead to work towards the Diploma in History and Computing, in which case the course last for only three terms and does not involve writing a dissertation.
