Hardhat History This is a place to learn about how to do historical research and how to write History. It exists mainly to serve Prof. Isern’s students at North Dakota State University , undergraduate and graduate, in their development as historical scholars. All historians are welcome, however. There is no physical space for Hardhat History. It is a virtual laboratory. And like any construction site, it’s not a pretty place, as it consists mostly of web pages composed in Word and others written in PowerPoint, packed with textual slides. It’s a lab, not a lounge. The lab has four main rooms. In each room you will find tutorial lessons that were composed in PowerPoint and saved as web pages. When you go to one of these links, the lesson opens in frames. Look down way to the lower right, and you will find the “Full Screen Slide Show” icon. Click on this, and as the lesson opens up full-screen, the sound will activate, as it will with each slide advance. When you hear the sound of aboriginal sticks, that’s a signal to advance to the next slide by left-clicking the mouse. If you want to repeat the sound for any slide, just click on the sound icon.
Going to the Source: A Room for Learning How to Do Historical Research
This room of Hardhat History teaches historians to do research. It is where you learn how to conduct original research in primary sources, research that goes beyond what we already know and makes a contribution to knowledge.

Page 41 Chapter Three Humanistic Historical Research Robert A. Carlson In Intent and Approach Anyone responding to the challenge of humanistic historical research should recognize his concomitant responsibilities for careful Page 42 investigation and for high-quality literary scholarship. The writing of humanistic history requires not only analytical skills but also the talent and mind set of the playwright. To write history is a two-part endeavor. Historians present a reasoned argument regarding the past, based on evidence and their own values. They must also make the presentation an exciting and literate narrative. Historians, like playwrights ( Baritz , 1962), ring up the curtain on the period they choose. They select the lead characters and the bit players. They develop the plot by selecting and arranging the facts. Through the narrative, they illuminate the idea, issue, or thesis related to some topic. And they bring the curtain down when they choose. The writing of high-quality historical research, then, requires that the analytically minded investigator also become adept at writing the narrative. Baritz , 1962, p.

    Jan Coffey and May McGoldrick
May McGoldrick, a historical romance writer, is a diligent and industrious professional. Jan Coffey is a bit neurotic, frankly. But with good reason. Jan writes contemporary suspense. To be honest, May and Jan are really both the same people. We (Nikoo and Jim) have been collaborating as May McGoldrick on historicals for a number of years, but now we’re also writing romantic thrillers as Jan Coffey. Interestingly enough, we’re finding that there are differences in writing stories in the two genres. First of all, we should tell you that we started setting our early stories in the 16 th century period because we had some academic background in the time period. Write what you know, they told us. But in writing historical novels as May McGoldrick, we’ve always tried, as well, to create new stories, new characters, and new problems for our heroines and heroes to overcome. To do that, we’ve pushed ourselves to stretch into areas where we have needed to learn new things. We have to admit that if we only wrote about what we knew, we never would have written about murderous lairds, or covens of Highland women, or cross-dressing artists, or children with physical handicaps, or promiscuous English queens!

Software for Historical Research and Writing by: Rick Brainard Date: 03/18/04 We are going to take a short break from the history and look at a list of affordable software that can assist you in organizing the information that you have gathered while researching the topic you are writing about. Historians use database programs like FileMaker Pro and Citation Microsoft Word or Corel Word Perfect Some of these programs, used by professional historians, can be too expensive for the average user or student. Therefore, check out this list of affordable software programs. All of these software titles are downloadable or available for purchase on the Internet.
    Word processors
Microsoft Office and Corel Office are program suites that have word processors, spreadsheets, presentation software and more. These programs are quite expensive but there are two more affordable, alternative Office Suites.
    • Star Office
This office suite has everything that Microsoft Office has except a grammar checker. What makes the program a great alternative is that it is free and cross-platform capable. It includes a built in email client and browser for surfing the Internet. You do have to pay for services and support however.

HISTORICAL RESEARCH ... Aarrgghh!! by Tracy Cooper If the very idea of "research" sends you white around the gills, read on. Divide and Conquer So... where do you start? If you’ve never tackled historical research before, the endless centuries worth of information can seem overwhelming. The trick is to divide everything into manageable portions. Dividing begins with historiography: the stuff in the books. There are two types, which for convenience I will call Political and Social. Political history is the stuff you learnt at school: Kings and Queens, movers and shakers, wars, governments. Most history books supply the political variety. Social history is the study of society; how people lived, usually focusing on the "common man". Writers need the social sort. You can find social histories, but they’re usually large, indigestible scholarly works that amble across centuries in the space of a sentence, and rarely descend to plebeian concerns such as what a heroine would wear, or think, or do with her time. Here’s how to use both types of history, and still get what you want.

The USAF Museum Research Division maintains an extensive collection of two-dimensional media as part of a government historical research facility. While primarily providing curatorial and historical research and writing in support of the Museum's exhibits and aircraft restoration programs, the Research Division provides limited research assistance to many external organizations and private individuals seeking information about Air Force aircraft, operations, and personnel. The Division also serves as the Museum's corporate memory by maintaining the Museum's historical files and writing its annual history. RESEARCH DIVISION POLICY Our primary mission of internal support, plus security and staffing considerations, mean that the USAF Museum Research Division offers only limited public access. The Research Division considers research visit requests individually, with preference given to academic and public-benefit projects , i.e., scholars and researchers working on advanced degrees or material for publication. Due to staff workload and availability, we can accommodate only a limited number of researchers. All requests for research visits must be submitted in advance through regular mail. We cannot support same day requests, nor can we accept research visit requests submitted via telephone or email.

Ten Commandments of Good Historical Writing
    by Theron F. Schlabach
With apologies to the Author of the original ten
    I. Thou shalt begin with an outline that buildeth thy entire paper around thy central ideas. An outline built around a THESIS AND SUBTHESES will do the job much better than one that only categorizes information or puts it into chronological orderalthough topical analysis and narrative also have their uses. In any case, whether you organize by thesis-subthesis, topic, or narrative, your central task is to ask penetrating, interpretive questions of your sources. Therefore structure your outline to let incidental facts recede as supporting evidence, and to emphasize answers to intelligent questions. Facts and details should always support the main ideas in evident ways. Do not relegate the real point (or points) of the paper to the conclusion. II. Thou shalt avoid self-conscious discussion of thy intended purposes, thy strategy, thy sources, and thy research methodology. Draw your reader's attention to the points you are making, not to yourself and all the misery and sweat of your process of research and writing. Keep the focus on what you have to say, not on the question of how you hope to develop and say it. Do not parade around in your mental underwear. Show only the well-pressed and well-shined final product.

Oscar Wilde said, “The one duty we owe to history is to rewrite it.” Contemporary writers of historical fiction seem to say “the one duty we owe to history is to reread it.” The main character Omar Khayyam Shakil in Shame makes a small disquisition on his own namesake Omar Khayyam. Salman Rushdie’s character says the other Omar Khayyam was never very popular in his native Persia; and he exists in the West in a translation that is really a complete reworking of his verses, in many cases very different from the spirit (to say nothing of the content) of the original. I, too, am a translated man. I have been borne across. It is generally believed that something is always lost in the translation; I cling to the notion—and use, in evidence, the success of Fitzgerald’s Khayyam—that something can also be gained. Gandhi was once asked what he thought of Western civilization. He said, “I think it would be a good idea.” So, too, historical fiction—it’s a great idea, if it were possible. This is a poor way to open a defense of a genre whose best known works in the first two-thirds of the 20th century were bodice-ripping romance novels. In the 19th century, War and Peace The Scarlet Letter Salammbo , and The Tale of Two Cities established historical material as a perfectly acceptable subject matter for that still new idea, the novel. During the period of high modernism, historical fiction fell out of fashion for various good and bad reasons. Roland Barthes, in

Tanika Sarkar The present Indian government is a coalition one, dominated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). What is little-known, however, is that the BJP is the electoral wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The RSS provides daily sessions of ideological and martial education to millions of people across the country, and coordinates a large and varied spectrum of subsidiary fronts, including the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) which is its religious wing. The VHP has pioneered immense violence against Muslim and Christian minorities in the last decade. The various fronts have overlapping, multiple membership, the leaders of each front also are important Sangh functionaries. What is even less recognised is that the RSS has been functioning for the last seventy odd years continuously, that it cultivated direct links with the Italian and German fascists, and that its founders acknowledged the influence of fascist authoritarianism, militarism and racism quite openly at one time. It might seem strange that in the middle of its designs about a transition to a highly authoritarian, militaristic, nuclearised Hindu nationhood, the Sangh combine invests a lot of attention to the writing of history. It is redirecting the production of school textbooks to promote an abrasive nation-worship and religious nationalism. It strenuously objects to all left-oriented historical writings. It is systematically packing all research organisations and funding bodies with trusted right-wingers. It tries to stop publication of edited volumes of archival documents dealing with the period of the anti-imperialist movement. A systematic smear campaign is directed at left historians to discredit their academic credentials and personal integrity. Important segments of the media are pressed into the service of the smear campaign.

    http://www.writetoinspire.com/article1211.html
    How to Research Historical Fiction
by Rita Gerlach Doing research for the historical novel can either be one of the most tedious jobs for a writer or one of the most enjoyable, besides writing the novel itself. We hear the phrase, write what you know. Research helps you do just that. The writer should look at the task of researching as an adventure, an unveiling of facts that perhaps have long been forgotten. Research will help you capture the setting of your novel. It will enable and equip you to make your novel flow and come alive. It will enhance your narrative. It will allow you to help the reader hear, taste, touch, smell, and see the setting as well as your characters. There are 5 steps you can take to effectively research your novel. 1. The Local Library Research does not have to be mind-boggling. The first step is researching the location of your novel. Think of who, what, when, where, and why. Your local library is an excellent place to begin. For example your novel takes place during the War of 1812. The first place I would start for simple and basic historical facts in the juvenal section. There you should find a book outlining the events of the war. Search for the style of dress, modes of transportation, what people ate, music, medicine, etc. Check encyclopedias and reference books. By now you have gathered some basic information. But how do you find those hidden facts? Where are those untold stories? Reference books and biographies can provide a lot of information. But your best source is your librarian. Ask for help, and tell the librarian you are writing a novel and need additional information the encyclopedias and reference books cannot provide. Your librarian should be able to direct you to the best information available.
