Historical Research and Writing
The Raw Material
Getting Started . The result of the research effort will be influenced by the quality and quantity of the source material. The first problem is locating appropriate sources. This generally begins by reviewing secondary sources touching on the topic (see bibliography entry). The bulk of the Marine Corps historical writer’s research, however, will involve primary sources. Command Chronologies . Since May 1965, all independent units, and all units of battalion/squadron size or larger, have submitted command chronologies. These are the only routinely submitted documents specifically intended to provide a historical record. They provide the bulk of the information for most operational histories. However, reliance on a single source invariably results in unbalanced histories. Command chronologies are no exception to this rule. The text of the chronology is only a summary of the unit’s activities. Supporting documents and other sources provide the details. Other Primary Sources . The History and Museums Division’s archives hold documents of historical importance for the Marine Corps pertaining to many subjects. Retirement schedules can be of great value in locating both headquarters and field histories. There also is a large body of material in the Special and Oral History Collection. For a list of guides and archives, see

Historical Research and Writing (Newberry Library) - 2500
(Offered second semester) (1 SEMESTER/1 G.S. credit) Grades 11-12 This course introduces students to the challenges of serious scholarly research and writing by allowing them to plan and execute their own projects at the world-famous Newberry Library. Each student should begin thinking about possible research topics upon deciding to take the course and should have met with the teacher to decide on fairly delimited topics. The goal of the course is for each student to produce polished scholarly writings suitable for publication by the end of the semester. Because each student will need to do most of the research and writing independently and because the class as a whole will be on a tight schedule, a high level of motivation, organization, and responsibility will be expected of everyone. back to "

Historical Research and Research Papers
This page is under construction. Introduction We are sometimes led to believe that research and writing proceed in four clearly-demarcated stages. First, we define a topic, focusing on a particular question and perhaps identifying a working thesis. Second, we search for sources, collecting bibliographical citations and determining their availability. Third, we read, analyze and interpret our sources, gradually impose order on the material. Finally, we write the paper. Beginning to write early in the process is ultimately more efficient. In research and writing, as in many other things, efficiency matters. Accuracy matters even more. But it is possible to be careful, to be thorough, even to be scrupulous, and, at the same time, to be efficient. Few college students or professors have time to waste. There is an art to developing time-saving techniques, an art that can only be acquired through experience, but that is well worth learning.

19. The Writing Of A Historical Essay Or Research Paper
Whether you are writing an inclass essay exam or a 20-page research paper, Marc Becker, The writing of a historical Essay or research Paper,
http://www.ilstu.edu/class/hist127/guide.html
The Writing of a Historical Essay or Research Paper
Whether you are writing an in-class essay exam or a 20-page research paper, there are some basic guidelines which you should keep in mind. The first part of this handout gives general information which is relevant to the writing of any historical essay. The second part gives tips which you should utilize in writing take-home essays, exams, and research papers.
Writing an Essay
An essay is not simply a list of facts. You must organize the facts into themes which support a central argument or thesis. This thesis should be introduced in the beginning of the paper and developed throughout the paper one step at a time. The stronger your thesis, the easier it will be for you to develop a strong argument. Use an outline to organize your thoughts in a clear, coherent and logical manner and to guide you in writing the essay. Organizationally, the essay has three main parts:
  • Introduction . Use the introduction to state your thesis, outline the main points you will make in the essay, and describe the conclusions which you will draw in the essay. History essays are not mystery papers; the reader should know from the beginning what your conclusions are. Use the introduction to draw the reader into the essay. Often it is easier to write your introduction last , after you clearly know what arguments you develop in the essay.
