Reading and Writing General Transforms
General transforms are stored in files in an ascii format devised at the McConnell Brain Imaging Centre, and usually have a filename extension of .xfm . The input and output functions are: public Status output_transform( FILE *file, char comments[], General_transform *transform ) public Status output_transform_file( char filename[], char comments[], General_transform *transform )
These two functions write the general transform to a file, in the appropriate format. The comments line is an arbitrary string which is stored in the file for documentation purposes. Newline characters in the comments correctly result in a multi-line comment with a comment character inserted at the beginning of each line. The first form of the function assumes the file is already open and will later be closed. The second form opens the file, with a default extension of .xfm , writes the transform, then closes the file. Both functions return

the victorian internet, standage
this interesting little book compares the internet with the telegraph. like "zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance" the best bits are the incidental details (in this case how the telegraph evolved, rather than how to fix your bike). for such an obviously good idea (in retrospect) the telegraph took a long time to get off the ground. the two reasons i could see were: first, that the "scientific community" was mainly a collection of poorly organised (if brilliant) amateurs, divorced from the general business community; second that surprisingly little was known about electricity - i didn't realise that something so commonplace now took so long to understand in depth.

Brusaw, Charles T., Gerald J. Alred, and Walter E. Oliu. The Business Writer’s Handbook . New York: St. Martin’s Press.
This helpful, easy-to-use handbook features a “unique four-way access system.” The main body is organized alphabetically for quick, straightforward reference. If you don’t find your topic this way (and sometimes you won’t, as when, for example, you’re looking for the “nonrestrictive comma”), you can turn to the index, which provides an “exhaustive” (as opposed to “exhausting”?) list of topics. Of if you prefer, you can turn to the topical key, which arranges the alphabetical entries into subject categories, such as “Types of Business Writing” and “Format and Illustrations.” Also featured is a section on “Five Steps to Successful Writing” (Preparation, Research, Organization, Writing the Draft, and Revision). Many of the entries are brief, but some (such as formal reports and proofreading) are developed at some length.

IST 8A-001 Understanding the Scientific Study of Consciousness 4 Units Evan Fletcher, Center for Neuroscience Consciousness has been implicitly the subject of study in the arts and religion throughout recorded human history. But in the last decade it has emerged as an explicit subject of scientific investigation and currently it is a "hot" topic. On the one hand, some scientists see grounds for optimism that a scientific explanation of consciousness will eventually be attained. Neuroscience has localized areas of the brain responsible for specific cognitive tasks. On the other hand, there are doubts, which also seem to have a scientific basis. Results in logic and computational theory suggest to some that the mind is certainly not a computer and perhaps cannot even be completely mimicked by a computer. This course will introduce some of the main ideas and controversies in the scientific study of consciousness. In order to do so, we will touch upon the fields of neuroscience, computer science, logic and physics. We will also visit some ideas in the philosophy of mind.
This course fulfills Science and Engineering Topical Breadth and Writing General Education requirements.

You've got to sit down and actually write a note?
You can't email. You can't leave a voice message.
No, it's got to be a hand-written note. Help! Why? The answer is because although we live in a high-tech society, there are many times when sending a real, hand-written note in the mail is not only the proper and polite thing to do, but it is just "the" correct thing to do. And unfortunately, in some cases today, buying a pre-worded card and simply signing it, is considered insensitive. So what to do? It's hard enough if you know the person, but if you don't know them well, it makes it even worse. What to say? This page is very long. ISBN: As Web design professionals, we often need to do some form of writing. It may be a business proposal, a Web site maintenance manual, online documentation, a FAQ, or numerous other documents. Since we design and code for a living, many of us aren't sure where to begin. While there are many books and articles that teach writing and grammar, who has time for it all? What we need is a direct approach that can be accessed quickly and succinctly, so we can get back to work. Well, Barry J. Rosenberg has done just that. His new book, Spring Into Technical Writing for Engineers and Scientists , covers everything you need to know about how to write effective documentation without much suffering. Barry knows what he's talking about, having authored over 30 programming manuals. Don't be scared off by the title. This book is not a course in creative writing, nor is it about hard-core grammar. It covers those topics that apply to people who write technical material, and it does it effectively.

Guidelines on Writing a Philosophy Paper Philosophical writing is different from the writing you'll be asked to do in other courses. Most of the strategies described below will also serve you well when writing for other courses, but don't automatically assume that they all will. Nor should you assume that every writing guideline you've been given by other teachers is important when you're writing a philosophy paper. Some of those guidelines are routinely violated in good philosophical prose (e.g., see the guidelines on grammar , below).
