W riting... Entry 3- Day 3 Monte Burch is one of the nation's leading writers. He works in many different genres and is both a book publisher as well as a magazine writer. Monte is one of the most widely-read and prolific freelance writers in the nation. QUESTION: How do you break into magazines? ANSWER: Breaking into magazines and book publishing are both very simple. Have something that you're interested in, and buy a Writer's Market. Then you can find the subject that you want to write about. QUESTION: How do you break into the book market? ANSWER: You can break into the book market in the same way. There's more of a demand for books now than ever before. I started at the smallest publishing house on the list when I looked into publishing my first book. I was rejected almost 50 times before I presented it to the biggest publisher, which decided to take my book. QUESTION: So the biggest publisher was the one who took your book after you were rejected 50 times by smaller publishing agencies?

Writing for Magazines
The ones I write for these days are Magic Circular, Budget, Linking Ring, Joe Steven's Magic Emporium Network, Abra, Repro and, of course, the magic club magazines. Small though the readerships of the society magazines are, they're still important to me, and I love writing for them. Within their pages I feel I am sharing things, and often new things, with my friends in magic, and with the next generation. I am often asked "How do you think up so many ideas?" I tell them "it's easy." I carry a notebook around with me at the time, and sometimes a pocket Dictaphone. I use the latter at night when going to bed, switching it on and off as required, and recording a new idea when it popped out of my mind. Sometimes, when playing back the recording I can't understand a single word of it, and several times I've been 'told off' for awaking my partner.

Writers' Magazines
This is a preliminary look at five periodicals intended to assist writers. The alphabetical list includes the four general-audience magazines with the highest circulation and one electronic periodical that focuses on speculative fiction. The ratings themselves are based on a thorough review of the magazines for the first quarter of 2002, considering both the presentation and quality of content. Indicated prices are list. The content breakdown is based upon page coverage, not word count. Percentages may not add to 100 due to rounding and overlap. Overall, this is a remarkably disappointing group of publications. With only one exception, writers are advised to spend their money elsewhere, particularly upon examples of good writing for study, and to focus on magazines (if at all) that concentrate on the kind of writing they intend to do. Writing for Children's Magazines
by Donna Freedman
(Revised and expanded version of an aricle orginally published in Children's Writer , a publication of the Institute for Children's Literature) Not everyone can write for kids, but everyone should want to: Children's magazines can be a lucrative market. I've been paid as much as $1,000 for a 350-word article. You don't have to have children, or even like them, to do this kind of writing - a childless, kid-hating friend of mine earned $1,100 on just two articles for juvenile magazines. And there are hundreds of freelance opportunities out there, from Sunday-school papers to glitzy, high-tech skateboard 'zines. The market has grown noticeably in recent years. In 1985, the Institute for Children's Literature identified 354 freelance markets. More recently, ICL listed nearly 600 such markets. Writing for kids isn't easy, of course. You have a tiny space in which to pack as much information as you can. You have to write in language they can understand. And you need fabulous ideas that will grab the attention of youngsters who are increasingly distracted by CD-ROM, cable television, and other competing media.
Non-fiction: Where the Action Is
Although many writers want to create enduring children's fiction, they're a lot more likely to sell a non-fiction piece. Juvenile magazines do publish a fair amount of short stories, but they're generally outnumbered by articles and activities. And an increasing number of magazines focus on non-fiction topics like science, nature and technology. "Where the sales are, where the interest is, is non-fiction," says Susan Tierney, editor of the industry newsletter

As a man, he undoubtedly had a set of faults and flaws. But he cared for dogs, and spent a lifetime instilling that love in other people as well. How To Approach Magazine Markets
by Xlibris It may seem a little obvious, but it doesn't hurt to be reminded of the essentials of freelancing for magazines. Even if you're enjoying a "quiet" freelance career and you're not counting on supporting yourself with your writing, it's a good idea to approach publications — even the small ones — with a measure of professionalism. OK, first you need to get the writer's guidelines. But let's be honest. How many of us have sat down with the annual Writer's Market bible, perused each page, targeted publications, and hastily sent off the article we just know is right for them? I certainly don't do it now, but I did once. Maybe you have, too. Obtain submission guidelines Guidelines serve several purposes:
  • They give a writer specifics about what types of submissions the publication is interested in, be it fiction, autobiography, nonfiction, poetry or whatever. They dictate word count (a small publication with few pages probably wouldn't appreciate a 5,000 word article).

Writing for magazines by Jacky Newcomb
I get a lot of letters from would be writers every week asking for advice, and sadly I no longer have the time to send individual e-mails. I do want to help you if I can though so here are a few hints and tips to get you started.
    It may seem obvious but…
    1. Can you imagine how many articles I receive from people that are full of spelling mistakes, poor english and repeated phrases and words? It shows little respect for you or the busy magazine Editor if you can't get this right! DO NOT write an article and then immediately send it off. Leave it until the following day (look at it with fresh eyes) and re-read it through again and again.
    2. DO research your subject thoroughly and make sure that your facts are right!
    3. Your work must be fresh and original to catch the Editors eye.
    4. Type out your work in plain text/font type (Times New Roman is fine).
    5. Add your suggested heading and your name as author. (Do ask for a credit for your work) and any relevant references to books, events, places and people should be added at the end of the article in case the magazine wants to include them.
    6. Magazines often 'box' various sections of a page to make it more interesting to read. If you use one or more parts of the article as separate sections - using appropriate headings it may make the editors job easier - the editor can visualise your article on the page.
