Writing For Magazines by Gail Miller
"Writing for magazines" What a title! Many books have been written about magazine writing, and to try to condense everything there is to know here would be futile indeed. Therefore I am going to concentrate on writing short items. Features which can be slotted in between other jobs. We all have half an hour here or there which could be utilised for writing, so here I am going to briefly outline how to present work and give you a few ways to generate ideas for your articles. Presenting your work
Always check who the current editor of the publication you are targeting is. Always enclose an SAE and don't be in too much of a hurry to receive your reply. Magazines work through their mail very slowly and a wait of three or four months to find out if work has been accepted is not out of the ordinary. Submit manuscripts on one side of white A4 paper and print in black ink. Put your name, address and telephone/email number on every page and leave generous margins all around the page. If you use more than one page for your feature, number each page. Double space your work and use around size 12 font size. Generating ideas
If your mind cannot generate ideas to write about, your typing fingers certainly won't be able to get into action. Therefore it is a good idea to start an 'ideas file' which will contain cuttings of anything which you have seen that fires your imagination. Start collecting news snippets, facts and figures, humourous news items - in fact anything that will get your creative juices flowing. Try to talk to as many people as you can in your day to day life and don't be afraid to eavesdrop either! You can pick up some fantastic stories listening in to other people's conversations. No really! Just don't make it too obvious.

7 Steps to Writing for Magazines, for Money!
by Tracey Smith Close your eyes and picture the scene. There you are, sitting in a lovely old French farmhouse, with a view stretching out over the local vineyards and orchards, scribbling away with a nice glass of red wine – ah….the life! For me, most of the above is true, minus the bit about the wine that is, or I would never get any work done. I moved to a lovely old farmhouse in March 2002 from the UK and although I have been a writer all my life, I set up officially in recent years. I am a full time writer, columnist, author, general word-bird and photographer. I think writers are born with a pen in their hands and they know it too. They are more than aware of their passion and ability to move people, from responses from simple letters written to friends. If you have an itch, that only words can scratch, perhaps it is time to consider looking seriously at making money from the craft you so clearly love. There are lots of ways to advance this business idea but I think some fundamental rules apply to those looking to earn a living, or supplement their income, from traditionally published or Internet magazine writing.

Writing For Magazines. Suggestions?
For some reason, I've always wanted to write a book. It started off as a desire to write the next Lord of the Rings classic, but has morphed into writing a reasonably useful technical book. So after reading Mike Gunderloy's 8 part " Advice for Writers " and Eric Gunnerson's post " So You Want to Write a Computer Book ", I've come to the conclusion that it might be better for me to start off with a few print articles. Ultimately I'd love to contribute an article to Wired (the best damn magazine on Earth...and beyond), but for now, I'm looking at various .NET technical journals and magazines. If you have experience writing for a magazine and have recommendations on publishers who were great to work with, please let me know. posted on Tuesday, April 05, 2005 9:25 AM

re: Writing For Magazines. Suggestions?
It's hard to beat writing an article for MSDN Magazine. They have a good staff, are knowledgeable, are reasonable to work with, and pay well. And I hear MSDN Online is very similar. Dave Donaldson
