All Children Can Write
Donald H. Graves
University of New Hampshire
Learning Disabilities Focus, 1985

The following article by Donald Graves, considered by many to be the "father" of the process approach to writing, is a classic piece on the need for a change in the way writing has typically been taught in schools. This article helped spark the movement now known as the "Writer's Workshop" approach. We selected this article because Graves discusses the challenges and needs of students with learning disabilities in the area of writing, clearly lays out how teachers can establish a community of learners and the writing process, and provides examples of teachers and students working together. We recommend the Writers' Workshop approach as a basis for teaching writing to students with learning disabilities, in combination with explicit instruction in writing strategies and skills. Many children who have learning disabilities are poor writers. They equate their struggles with handwriting, spelling, and language conventions with a lack of ideas and information worth sharing. The writing-process approach to teaching first emphasizes what children know, then the conventions that will help them share their meaning with others in the class. This approach has led to major breakthroughs for young writers, particularly those who have learning problems.

Children's Writing in ESL. ERIC Digest.
This "Digest" is based on the ERIC/CLL "Language in Education" series monograph entitled "WRITE ON: Children Writing in ESL," written by Sarah Hudelson. The monograph describes how children develop as writers in English as a second language. It will be available in early 1989 from Prentice Hall Regents, Mail Order Processing, 200 Old Tappan Road, Old Tappan, NJ 07675, or by calling 1-201-767-5937. Children whose native language is not English are present in ever increasing numbers in elementary schools in the United States. Educators, therefore, must provide opportunities for these learners to develop English-as-a-second-language (ESL) skills and to learn school content-area material. In elementary schools, particular emphasis has recently been placed on helping ESL learners become more proficient writers of English to ensure their academic success in English language classrooms (Allen, 1986; Rigg and Enright, 1986; Urzua, 1987).

Dr. Kenneth Viste, Jr., passed away Sunday, Aug. 21, 2005. Dr. Viste has been a member of the board of Very Special Arts Wisconsin since 1987 and has provided invaluable guidance as we seek to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities. Because of his involvement in disability advocacy activities, he has been able to provide our organization with an insight into many of the issues individuals with disabilities face each day. Ken's personal ties to both sides of the aisle in the state legislature has helped VSA move key issues forward. He is also an excellent spokesperson and has been helpful in securing personal contributions for the organization. He will be missed. Publishing Children's Writing. ERIC Digest.
To make writing public, the writer must have an audience. The audience becomes the writer's stimulusthe purpose for writing. If children do not have a purpose for writing (i.e., an intended audience) then writing becomes an "exercise" for a non-communicative event. Children who have not published do not write for an audience, but instead write for a critical readerthe teacher. Publishing for early writers may mean reading their writing to teachers, a group of children, a friend, or a parent. Publication may mean showing or displaying the work. Writing can be displayed on bulletin boards, on classroom walls or in the halls, mailed to pen pals, sent home, or published in "real" book form. Publishing "real" books is a child-centered production, where the child designs the book cover and illustrates the book, has a dedication and title page, and may even have a page written "about the author." Students model bookmaking just like real authors.
WRITING COMPETITIONS
Some schools or school districts have writing competitions. The author of the best handmade book in each classroom gets to attend a conference for young authors. Some schools arrange for all children in the school to attend the conference. A children's book author may be contacted to talk to the young authors, and workshops on writing may be conducted in which children share ideas about being authors with each other. The children's books are displayed, then put in their school libraries for others to read. Copies are sometimes made and placed in public libraries to reach others in the community.

Help Your Child Learn to Write Well
April 1993 American children must be ready to learn from the first day of school. And of course, preparing children for school is a historic responsibility of parents. Should you help your child with writing? Yes, if you want your child to:
  • Do well in school
  • Enjoy self-expression
  • Become more self-reliant
You know how important writing will be to your child's life. It will be important from first-grade through college and throughout adulthood. Writing is:
Practical.
Most of us make lists, jot down reminders, and write notes and instructions at least occasionally.
Job-Related.
Professional and white-collar workers write frequentlypreparing memos, letters, briefing papers, sales reports, articles, research reports, proposals, and the like. Most workers do "some" writing on the job.
Stimulating.
Writing helps to provoke thoughts and to organize them logically and concisely.
Social.

1) Writing Traditional Stories from a Different Point of View Read "The True Story of the Three Little Pigs" (by Jon Scieszka) with the children. This tells the "Three Little Pigs" story from the wolf's point of view. Ask the children to think of a story that they know well, and to write another version from another point of view. e.g. Write "Cinderella" from the PoV of one of the ugly sisters, OR Write "The Three Billy Goats Gruff" from the PoV of the troll, OR Write "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" from the PoV of Goldilocks. 2) Design a New Room for the Chocolate Factory Based on "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" by Roald Dahl. Remind the children of the story and read chapter 15 - a description of the Chocolate Room. Ask the children who have read the story if they can think of any of the other rooms in the factory. Make a list of these on the board for the children to refer to later.

Favorite Questions from Kids How I Broke Into Publishing Literally! My Perfect Writing Fantasy What I Do When I'm not Writing ... Links
by Vera Rosenberry The first book I wrote, Noelle of the Nutcracker , illustrated by Jan Brett, is about a little girl who loves to dance and an ambitious ballerina doll who wants to star in the Nutcracker ballet. After I wrote Noelle, children began asking me if I wanted to be a ballerina when I grew up. Look at this picture of me dressed up for in my third-grade ballet recital. Do I look like someone who is excited about dancing? If you said NO you are right! I was a terrible ballerina. I have a big toe that won't bend and I can't do the splits. But I had a wonderful time writing about a little girl who loves to dance. That is one of the special things about writing. You can use your imagination to step into the lives and hearts of other people. Noelle of the Nutcracker
