SOME PRACTICAL ADVICE ON WRITING AND PUBLISHING FOR YOUNG WRITERS Secondly, read as much as you can. Learn from the storytellers who have come before you. Notice how they have practiced their craft. A writer is like a carpenter. We have a toolbox which includes vocabulary, punctuation, sentence structure, tense, point of view, etc.. All of these are just tools in our toolbox. The more you read the more tools you will acquire to "build the building" of your story. So keep on reading. Do not expect to be published by a major publishing company or magazine right away. Again, if you are interested in playing baseball for the New York Mets, you will not expect to walk on the field as their first baseman while you are in the sixth grade or even in highschool. The same thing applies to writing. Concentrate on the writing first. Worry about the publishing later. If you want other people besides your friends and your family to read your work, you can try some of these ideas:
  • If your school has a newspaper or a literary journal, try sending them some of your work. If they don't have one, maybe you could talk to the school librarian or your teacher about starting one.

The Art of Writing for Children
If you are interested in writing and/or illustrating children's books for publication, you will need to study various aspects of the industry prior to seeking publication. You must learn what makes a manuscript publishable, how to find the right publisher for your book and how to submit your manuscript to the selected publisher(s).
You will not be able to write a story, print it, then send it to the first publisher you find and expect to be published. There are many beginners out there who think this is how to get published. You will be well ahead in the game if you do a bit of reading first.

REMEMBER (Inspired by Alan Jackson)
By Class poem, 14-15, Le Havre, France Where were you when the world stopped turning?
I was at school, I was learning.
Where were you when New York started burning?
I was here in my classroom. I was learning. That day in September We shall all remember. Did you hear the news on the radio? Did you see the pictures that the TV showed? Did you watch the Twin Towers fall? Now we shall never see them at all. What were you doing when the world stopped turning? I was sitting in my classroom, listening and learning. What were you doing when New York started burning? I was living far away while others were dying. I was laughing and singing while others were crying. We shall always remember the ninth of September Remember, Remember, Remember.

Writing and Illustrating Multicultural Children's Books
by Harold Underdown Written in 1995, updated in early 1999, with more updates in 2001, including direct links to pages on Amazon for more information or to purchase individual books. See the site's bookstore page. Some details are out of date, but I believe the main arguments of this piece are still valid, and the recommended books still useful and interesting. I will continue to update this when I can.
Table of contents:
Multicultural children's books are very much talked about wherever writers and illustrators for children gather. I hear certain questions over and over: Is "multiculturalism" simply a hot new topic or category or does it mean something more? Is this an opportunity for writers? Who can write a multicultural book? Who can illustrate one? The field is complex and changing, but there is a place in it for creative people of all backgrounds.
The roots of the field
The term "multiculturalism" originates in education, springing from recent curriculum changes in the U.S. public schools that give more attention to history and literature from outside of Anglo-Saxon Europe. Multicultural education aims to celebrate all the cultures that make up contemporary American society.

Boy Scout Battle Pits Gay Activists vs. Minority Kid
July 6, 2000 By Heather Mac Donald The Supreme Court ruled last week that the government can’t force openly gay scoutmasters on the Boy Scouts in violation of the Scouts’ moral code. But the battle is hardly over. Expect gayrights activists to intensify the pressure on corporations, United Ways and other voluntary organizations to withhold the tens of millions of dollars they annually contribute to scouting, and to sue public entities that sponsor the Scouts for discriminating against homosexuals. The victims of this campaign will be poor, minority children. That’s because charitable dollars donated to the Scouts go mostly to the inner city. Suburban Scout troops are selfsupporting; they raise their expenses through Christmas tree sales, bake sales and other means. Suburban parents can afford to buy their sons Scout uniforms, equipment and camp tuition. Innercity families have a harder time. When Fran Harty, a scoutmaster in the mostly white southern end of Staten Island, N.Y., takes his troop camping in Delaware, 10 fathers show up in cars. Scouts in Harlem take the bus. Corporate donations defray part of the costs of uniforms and camp fees, though in keeping with the Scout ethic of selfreliance and thrift, nothing is given away. “We ask them to earn their way to camp,” explains Jim Wilson, executive director of Atlanta’s Operation First Class, a program targeted at inner-city boys. Scouts have to show mastery of the Scout Oath and Law, or make progress towards Tenderfoot rank, before they are given handbooks or help with uniforms.
