by Nichole McGill The day I set aside to write this article was the day my issue of arrived in the mail — my payment for having a story published in it. Two years ago, this international-now-based in Ottawa literary journal of “bold new fiction” would have arrived in 8½ by 11 magazine format complete with slick cover and ads. Today, the new has downsized to a chapbook format, each cover of this issue marked with unique artwork provided by the editor’s three-year-old son. It’s an admittedly more intimate touch than a glossy cover, and in the perilous world of Canadian independent literary magazines, a sign that the magazine is alive and well. It may come as no surprise that even in the world of Canadian literary magazines, there seem to be two solitudes: the seemingly stable bastion of mainstream magazines, as represented by the Grains , the Geists , and the Arc Poetrys , and the magazines that promise grit — the undertone of subcultures, the urban tales, and yes, stories that reflect the slow, steady rise of Canadian erotica (See “ You Said Beaver ”). The latter is offered by the

Keeping Kids Online Magazine Alive! Our Goal At Kids Online Magazine, our main goal is to give children a fun and safe place to share their writing and artwork with other children all over the world, and to foster self-esteem and creative-thinking skills in the kids who participate. We did not set out to create a money-making machine, and we do not believe in forcing page after page of ads onto impressionable children. A Place for ALL Children We will never charge children to view our pages, and we will never charge children to have their stories and artwork published on our pages. This website is truly a site for all children, from the kids who have access to their computer at home, to the ones who surf the net at their school or local library. Quality and Safety That Comes With a Price We take pride in the fact that we read EVERY submission, and we contact each parent manually. We don't use computer programs that do this for us automatically, like many other sites on the web. This ensures that each story is appropriate for all audiences, and that it does not contain information that would allow someone to contact that child. It also ensures that we are actually contacting the child's parents or teacher for permission, and not a fake email address.

Brought to you by the Purdue University Online Writing Lab
plagiarism Purdue students will want to make sure that they are familiar with Purdue's official academic dishonesty policy as well as any additional policies that their instructor has implemented. Another good resource for understanding plagiarism is the WPA Statement on Plagiarism.

The Contradictions of American Academic Writing
Show you have done your research -But- Write something new and original Appeal to experts and authorities -But- Improve upon, or disagree with experts and authorities Improve your English by mimicking what you hear and read -But- Use your own words, your own voice Give credit where credit is due -But- Make your own significant contribution
Since teachers and administrators may not distinguish between deliberate and accidental plagiarism, the heart of avoiding plagiarism is to make sure you give credit where it is due. This may be credit for something somebody said, wrote, emailed, drew, or implied.
