Clinics, Institutes, Centers CLINICAL PROGRAMS More than 100 students pass through the clinics each year. Each student works 20 hours a week for 10 weeks, totaling more than 20,000 hours of donated service. If these hours were billed at a modest hourly rate of $25, students' contributions to representing low-income and indigent clients would equal $500,00 each year. The Concept of A Writing Center by Muriel Harris News About IWCA Starting a Writing Center Peer tutoring ... Home Originally Published by The International Council of Teachers of English September 1988 The Concept of a Writing Center Writing centers exist in a variety of shapes, sizes, and settings. Typically they are part of a writing program or learning center and serve the entire school, both at the secondary and college levels. Although writing centers may differ in size, specific services, source of staffing, and organizational procedures, they share the following approaches:
Tutorials are offered in a one-to-one setting Tutors, who may be peers, professionals, graduate students, part-time instructors, or full-time teachers, meet individually with writers in the writing center either briefly (e.g., fifteen to twenty minutes) or for more extended periods of time (typically an hour) to attend to that particular writer's concerns. The writers who attend the center may come in only a few times for specific help or on a regular basis. Some writers seek help on their own; others appear at the recommendation of teachers; and in some cases, writers work in the center as a required part of their coursework.

Effective presentations, both written and oral, are an important way that medical professionals are evaluated by their peers. Yet almost no attention is given to these subjects in the medical curricula. The Writing and Speaking for Excellence seminars fill an enormous gap in medical education; the content is earthy, witty, and to the point. I think these courses are a must for any physician who aspires to speak or to write for his or her peers. Even the most experienced speakers and writers will find much to take away and will perhaps wish, as I did, that these courses had been around 20 years ago.

The Writing Centers' Mellon Grant Proposal
  • Abstract Introduction Statement of Objectives Rationale ... Biographies of Program Coordinators
  • Abstract
Because technology can fundamentally change writing and the writing process, we propose a two-year project that integrates faculty development, resources for students, and training for Writing Center staff at all the Claremont Colleges. The focus of the proposal is a series of hands-on faculty workshops that demonstrate how particular technologies can facilitate the use of writing in any course. In addition, the project provides ongoing support as faculty implement technology-based writing in their courses. The project also creates online writing resources for students that include informational and interactive components. Writing Centers participating in the project will offer online consulting services to individuals and groups of students. This integrated, intercollegiate approach will create an environment that takes full advantage of the pedagogical benefits that emerge from the joining of technology and writing.
    Introduction
Technology can fundamentally change the way students and faculty think about writing and the writing process. Sadly, the Claremont Colleges lag far behind other institutions in the integration of technology and writing, both within introductory writing courses and within discipline-specific courses that use writing. At the 1997 Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC), approximately one-third of the 500 sessions addressed innovative ways to combine technology and writing. None of the Claremont Colleges faculty presented at this national forum. Claremont students and faculty would benefit from a concerted effort to bring writing and technology together. We therefore propose a two-year project that does so through faculty development, resources for students, and training for Writing Center consultants.

DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE
Each year, millions of children find themselves thrust into the American legal system as the result of a host of circumstances, from divorcing parents or neglectful or abusive homes, to paternity issues or even criminal charges. Too often, these children lack effective legal representation to ensure that their interests are recognized and protected. Whittier Law School founded the Center for Children's Rights (CCR) in 1994 to address this pressing need. It is one of the most comprehensive programs of its type among law schools. The Center's mission is, first and most importantly, to train students to represent the rights and interests of children. In addition, the Center seeks to serve as a resource for the community.
