Police/Public Safety Writers Association Revitalizes Under New Management!
Welcome to the Public Safety Writer’s Association Website. Founded in 1997 by Roger Fulton as the Police Writer's Club , the Public Safety Writer’s Association offers both new and experienced, published and not yet published writers the chance to meet at an annual conference, network through the organization’s website and newsletter and compete in an annual writing competition. Members also receive a continuously updated list of publishers and publications and tips from successful writers on everything from how to write a query letter, to how to find an agent, to what to wear to the premier of your Hollywood blockbuster movie. As the press release linked to this page announces, the organization is now re-organizing and is extending membership to writers in a wide variety of public safety and security fields. In the planning stage is a mentoring program that will match experienced writers with those who are just getting started. New, also is a free manuscript critique service available on a one-time basis to all new and renewing members. Our annual conference is tentatively set for March, 2006 in Las Vegas. We’ll have more specific information available on that soon. Writing Competition winners will be announced at the conference (you don’t have to be present to win, but it would be a lot more fun if you were). We’ll post the rules and applications for the competition on this website in April to give you plenty of time to work on your entry.

The Writer s Workshop offers a variety of courses and tutorials to meet the needsof a wide range of writers. After founding the Narrative Nonfiction
http://www.thewritersworkshop.net/
I was trying to write then and I found the greatest difficulty was to put down what really happened in action; what the actual things were which produced the emotion that you experienced…the real thing, the sequence of motion and fact which made the emotion and which would be as valid in a year or ten years or, with luck and if you stated it purely enough, always.

Our Philosophy
Writing well about what really happened and how it happened does not come easily, especially early on. Writers need encouragement, skillful guidance and sound, practical advice to master their craft. Otherwise, they can flounder for years, repeating mistakes over and over again, turning what should be a rewarding and enlightening activity into an exercise in frustration. Experienced authors can benefit from the structure a class provides to perfect and extend their technique. The Writer's Workshop offers a variety of courses and tutorials to meet the needs of a wide range of writers. After founding the Narrative Nonfiction program at the University of Washington in 1993, one of the first such programs in the country, I developed an online and campus-based writing program that combines the best of fiction and nonfiction writing. The Writer's Workshop is the result.

Prayer Focus: Pakistan Since 9/11 and the US's retaliation in the Middle East, Pakistan's Christians have suffered increased persecution for their faith. Bombings, shootings and personal attacks on churches, ministries and individuals have targeted the Christian community. Literature can play an important role in evangelism at a time when overtly witnessing is difficult. Against this backdrop, the church needs encouragement, faith-strengthening materials, and books for witnessing. In December, MAI will help lead an intensive four-day seminar to equip local writers in collaboration with Pakistan's largest Christian publisher. Since its founding, this publishing house has published some 500 titles, including fiction, devotionals, commentaries, Christian life books and evangelistic tracts. However, "most of these books are translated from English books, which do not fully meet our needs," said the director. "We want MAI to help us develop indigenous writers." Pray that local writers will gain skills to help them create materials that speak to the hearts of believers and seekers.

The conference was greatI raved about the writers and story ideas to my boss upon returning. Keith Kloor, editor, Audubon This was my first time at One-on-One, and I'll definitely be back. This is the best opportunity I've experienced to learn first-hand about the specific needs of different markets, while having the opportunity to meet and socialize with editors and very accomplished writers. The value of the networking opportunities far exceeds the cost of the conference. It was a great experience. New Jersey freelance writer Gwen Moran I think the thing I've found most valuable about One-on-One is the opportunity to learn in-depth info on magazines that I never thought I'd ever pitch. Alsoit provides the rare chance to discuss an idea in its earliest stages with an editor, which only boosts the sales potential. New York freelance writer Alison Stein Wellner
