Women’s Writers Meet
The Women’s Writers Meet, conceptualized by Ather Zia, was the first Samanbal organized. This workshop sought to provide a platform for women writers based in Jammu, Kashmir and New Delhi to present their writings and discuss their sensitivities. At one level, it brought together writers from different faiths, and at another, it brought together the different languages - Kashmiri, Hindi, Urdu and English - spoken by the Kashmiris. Held on the 2 nd and 3 rd October of 2003 at a venue overlooking the picturesque Dal Lake, the workshop also endeavoured to be a meeting point for different generations of writers to nurture mutual respect and understanding between them. The poetry and prose presented during the workshop were weaved in and around the conflict in Kashmir. Themes included human rights abuses by security forces, tragic lives of half-widows, the inhumane face of militancy as well as the cracks in the syncretic tradition of the Kashmiris and the anguish of Kashmiri Pandits who were forced to leave the Valley. Noted creative writers including Ms Ruksana Jabeeen, Ms. Qurrat-ul-Ain, Ms. Kshama Kaul, Mrs. Bimla Raina, Ms. Naseem Shifai and Ms. Chandrakanta were present at the Meet. A majority of the participants were not caught in their own grief but acknowledged the others’ pains as well.

Meet the writers Stories Talk to the writers Teachers Page ... Ask the writers a question Meet the Writers Abdirazak Osman I am a citizen of Mogadishu, and having spent my childhood, schooldays and adulthood in that once great city I know each and every corner of it. The last time I saw Mogadishu was in 1987, and ever since then I have been a foreigner in some place or other.
My second hometown is Cairo, where I spent six great years of my life. Most of this time I spent teaching English at the International Living Language Institute (ILLI), where half the students were Somali. I started writing In the Name of our Fathers while still in Cairo, though I finished it in Denmark. The second important thing I did in Cairo was music, for it was there I learned to write lyrics, compose and even sing. On New Year’s Eve 1993 I released my debut album, which I first called Rendezvous and later Gabar. It was re-released in London, as Gabar, in the mid-nineties during a visit I made to London, and several thousand have been sold to Somalis throughout the world, my main markets being Egypt, England and Canada. In writing, my first published work was a rather touching short story about the Somali civil war called ‘At Least there are still some good people left’, published in Hal-Abuur: Journal of Somali Literature and Culture based in London. My second work was an English Grammar in Somali, published in Denmark by my own publishing house, Banaadir Books, in 1995, which has sold well. My novel In the Name of our Fathers, published in 1997, is my third work.

Image above by Audrey Niffenegger BEST LITERARY NIGHT. Writers with drinks are writers ready to meet the world, and when our readers have a hankering to see these often spectacular mismatches, they turn (yes!) to Writers With Drinks a kind of roving public salon and reading series to put drinks in writers' hands and thrust them onstage to bring their works to life. For those who equate literary with stuffy , WWD will come as a plesantly relaxed surprise. San Francisco Bay Guardian, Best of the Bay, Readers Poll 2005 OK, so a stand-up comic, a literary agent, a hostage negotiator, a sex worker and a KALW radio current-affairs personality walk into a bar .... No, this isn't an off-color joke, it's Writers with Drinks, the spoken-word variety show that mixes genres, styles and cocktails, back again with a more-eclectic-than-usual concoction. Hosted by the incisive and very connected writer Charlie Anders, the monthly series celebrates writers from every corner of the literary world, as well as pundits and comedians and a few other sundry performers and intellectuals. SFGate.com's Epicks, Jan. 7, 2005 Variety is more that just the name of Prince's favorite girl-singer sidekick. It's more than just having sex dressed as Alien Greenspan every once in a while. It's also a Literary Imperative! Which is why Writers With Drinks combines erotica with literature, stand-up comedy with science fiction and poetry with essays. Plus mystery, romance, memoir, rants and "other."

Creating A Classroom of Writers Using the "Meet the Author" Collection
Drive home the importance of each step of the writing process with real words from real authors! Young writers will be comforted (and surprised) to learn that their favorite author uses a writing process similar to their own. Famous authors also experience many of the same writing frustrations as kids do! The words of real authors might be just the inspiration your students need to help them through the painstaking writing process! Following is the text of a "Teacher Notes" guide produced by the publishers of the Meet the Author collection, a series of autobiographies written by your students' favorite children's book authors. The "notes" below are reproduced with permission of Richard C. Owen Publishers, Inc. Be sure to check out

The Crime Writers' Association
Welcome to the Crime Writers' Association
We are a professional group of crime authors who, each year, stage the prestigious Dagger Awards for the best crime writing of the year. We have just announced that Ian Rankin is the winner of the 2005 Cartier Diamond Dagger which is awarded for a lifetime's achievement in crime fiction. On this website we do our best to tell you more about us and about what we do. Not only does the work of crime writers, currently the most popular fiction genre, line bookshops worldwide, but in addition it continues to form the basis of a massive proportion of TV and film drama. The CWA has more than 450 members, all of us writers of fiction and non-fiction. Our criterion of membership is that an author must have had at least one book published by a bona fide publisher. The Association was formed over fifty years ago as a body committed to the support of professional writers. We organise social events so that writers can meet kindred spirits and have some fun together, while at the same time exchanging their thoughts and ideas, but we also help writing groups, festivals and literary events with specialist teams of writers who can talk about every aspect of the life of a modern novelist. Look here for more information about the groups of writers who can participate in your events This site includes news of awards competitions events and - most importantly - our latest books . There are links to many of our members' personal websites where you can find out more about your favourite authors. There should be something for all tastes. Our genre ranges from very dark contemporary thrillers to light historical fiction, and includes everything from police procedurals to heavy psychological suspense - not to mention the non-fiction world of true crime and other connected books.

"Israeli, Palestinian and Arab writers from around the world will meet at the Sheikh Hussein Bridge on Tuesday, February 15, 2005 for a unique literary gathering. The Bridge, which is an international crossing point between Israel and Jordan, serves as a powerful symbol of hope, a link to understanding and a passageway over conflict." " Samir el-Youssef, Palestinian writer attending from London, said, "Only by meeting each other can we, Palestinians and Israelis, truly know how close or distant we really are; how easy or difficult it will be to live together. We don't have the luxury of avoiding this encounter; it is the duty of Palestinian and Israeli intellectuals and writers to gain such knowledge and render the experience for our communities."
