The South-East Asia Earthquake Please help. This is dreadful beyond words. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the entire island of Sumatra was moved 100 feet to the southwest. In the lightly populated Andaman and Nicobar islands alone, there are three thousand confirmed dead, 30,000 missing, 15 villages still under water, and several islands nobody can raise on the radio. The extent of the damage around the shores of the Indian Ocean is like thousands of miles of 9/11, in some cases stretching miles inland, from Sumatra to Somalia. Children were hit hard. So were the small indigenous fishing fleets, which would have been out doing early-morning fishing when the waves came. This is world-class bad. The South-East Asia Earthquake says: How you can help: 1. Please pass this

One day later, Michelle decided that she would forego her final year of eligibility at Ohio State and also get on with her life. (She had averaged 16 minutes and a just over four points a game for the Buckeyes, but also had undergone her third ankle surgery in four years near the end of the season.) So this is what we have: Five years ago a brother and sister were headed for greatness at the highest levels of sport. Neither of them made it. Michael had a terrific college career, but did not get drafted. Michelle played Division I basketball, but was not a star and will not play in the Olympic Games or the WNBA. But they will both move on. Michelle will continue studying at Ohio State. Michael already has a degree and job offers were rolling in before he left Ohio on Tuesday. "I expect to work for him someday,'' said Anthony. "What a message this is for young people, about not putting all your eggs in one basket.''

Ed Viesturs is not a name you would normally use in the same sentence as Tiger Woods . After all, Viesturs is a mountain climber, one of the best in the world and certainly America's finest. He does his most impressive work five miles into the air. Tiger, as you saw last weekend at St. Andrews, accomplishes his great deeds closer to sea level. And in much warmer temperatures. But perhaps there is a loose connection between Viesturs and Woods and even if there isn't, I'm going to force one. After becoming the first American to summit all 14 of the world's mountains higher than 8,000 meters (26,240 feet), Viesturs announced his retirement last month, just a few days short of his 46th birthday. In essence, he had no more mountains to climb. Will the same thing cross Tiger's mind once he conquers all his mountains?

Topics include Pulp Fiction (including in-depth looks at such icons as Hammett, Daly, Chandler, Nebel, Constiner, Davis, Gardner, and John K. Butler) and Contemporary Mystery Fiction (notably the Contemporary Private Eyes and Thrillers section). Michael is also responsible for the equally impressive Classic Comics Site . Recommended. Rising from the ashes following the collapse of about.com is this great volunteer review site I've only recently discovered, run by Barbara Franchi, covering tons of mysteries and thrillers in all categories. Barbara intends to post "the full range of reviews from rave to phooey. For more info, check out the site and e-mail us ." Volunteers to do some of the maintenance on the site are needed.

On Turning Pro and Remembering Your Roots
By Linda Price
An Interview with Joyce Krieg,
Pacific Grove, CA resident and author of Murder Off Mike
Winner of the St. Martins First Novel Contest Joyce Krieg's Joyce drew from her experience as a newspaper reporter working with cops and in radio when radio was 'strictly a boy's club' for her recent success. The women's movement of the sixties and seventies opened up opportunities for this San Jose State Journalism major who found herself transplanted to Sacramento in 1974. Finally, and most importantly, put your work 'out there'. Submit, enter contests. Joyce found the St. Martins contest by accident. About eight years prior, she felt like burning the winning manuscript. Instead, she put it on a disc and put the hard copy under her bed where it resided for eight years. Literally. Moreover, the day before the contest deadline, with 20 pages to rewrite plus 350 pages to print, she "almost went to the beach!" Nevertheless, she forced herself to finish and got it in the mail postmarked on time. Barely. Sticking to it paid off. When did she start to feel like a pro? "You first feel like a pro when the contract arrives in the mail with money because pros get paid to write. Then, when you're holding that first hardbound copy of your mystery and your contract calls for two more books, you know you're a pro! Writing that second book becomes a priority, everything else is secondary." How is the winning book selling? 'Murder Off Mike' is "doing as well as or better for an out of the box unknown author." She quickly added, "Promoting the book and marketing oneself is a major part of selling." At this point, eyes twinkling mischievously, she leaned forward and whispered, "Publishing is about ten per cent talent and 90 percent hard work."

Linux is turning pro BusinessWeek - 31/01/2005 Today, little understood by the outside world, the community of Linux programmers has evolved in recent years into something much more mature, organized, and efficient. Put bluntly, Linux has turned pro. Torvalds now has a team of lieutenants, nearly all of them employed by tech companies, that oversees development of top-priority projects. Tech giants such as IBM (IBM ), Hewlett-Packard (HPQ ), and Intel (INTC ) are clustered around the Finn, contributing technology, marketing muscle, and thousands of professional programmers. IBM alone has 600 programmers dedicated to Linux, up from two in 1999. There's even a board of directors that helps set the priorities for Linux development.
The result is a much more powerful Linux. The software is making its way into everything from Motorola (MOT ) cell phones and Mitsubishi robots to eBay (EBAY ) servers and the NASA supercomputers that run space-shuttle simulations. Its growing might is shaking up the technology industry, challenging Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT ) dominance and offering up a new model for creating software. Indeed, Torvalds' onetime hobby has become Linux Inc. "People thought this wouldn't work. There are just too many people and companies to hang together. But now it's clear it does work," says Mark Blowers, an analyst at market researcher Butler Group.
