The Editor/Writer Revolving Door
by Marcia Yudkin
A Civil Action, gave me at least half a dozen assignments when he served as the editor of The Valley Advocate, an alternative weekly newspaper in Western Massachusetts, during my first few years freelancing. Dan Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence, worked as an off-site editor for Psychology Today Maker of Saints, was someone I pursued - and finally snagged - with query after query when she worked for The Village Voice in New York City. When I reflect now on how these people made a spectacular transition from editor to writer, I find numerous lessons for writers beyond the obvious prediction that if you freelance long enough, one day you too will be able to say, "I knew so-and-so when." Even if you never take on the formal job title "editor" yourself, it's important for you to understand the frequency with which word-oriented people shape-shift from writer to editor, vice versa or back and forth. Self-Employed Professional magazine with his becoming a writer at all.

Previous Major at UCLA: Economics
Job Title: Sports Writer LK: Explain your position and the major responsibilities of your position. TT: I'm a sportswriter for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. I'm a general assignment writer, which means I cover all sorts of things, but I also serve as our No. 2 writer on the Blues of the NHL. So I'm around that team a lot during the season, though our No. 1 writer does most of the traveling with the team. But after that, I could be doing almost anything. In the past four months, I've written stories on bullriding and bowling. I spent two days with Cory Spinks, the world welterweight boxing champion, at his training camp in Colorado Springs. On consecutive weekends, I covered the Missouri Valley Conference basketball tournament, the NCAA wrestling championships, the NCAA basketball regionals and the U.S. Olympic women's marathon trials. On Wednesday, I'm flying to San Jose to cover the Blues in the playoffs. Responsibilities? I guess to get the story first and get it right. Or to make deadline.

Systems of reading copy Chris , 2/14/2005, 12:08:08 AM Our method of reading copy is pretty inefficient right now and we're looking to change it..I am wondering how other college papers go through the copyediting process...Does the Editor in Chief read every story? Do writers come up to do an initial edit with section editors? Do you track changes during editing? If not, then why not? What's your process from start to finish? Dogs bark (Or how to infiltrate your newsroom with good writing) By DICK HUGHES
Salem Statesman Journal You're back in the same old grind. So how do you push good writing? How do you nudge your editors, and the rest of the newsroom, along? Here are 21 ideas from other newsrooms, compiled for a National Writers' Workshop. You can use many on your own. Some need editors' backing (which is always helpful). Choose what's best for your situation. Most cost little money, so the boss can't say, "We can't afford that." But remember, dogs bark, so don't expect them to purr not to begin with, at least. Form an ongoing writers group. Give one another the support, ideas and constructive suggestions you don't always get from your editors. Set up short-term, four- to seven-week writer circles, with a leader/mentor and three to seven writers who get together each week to critique one another's work. (This might lead to a regular writers group.) Make copies of the best tips from National Writers Workshop sessions. Pass them out. Hold a brown bag discussion about what you learned. Invite the editors. Do this whenever someone attends an outside workshop or convention. Buy a tape (or ask your publication to) of your favorite writing workshop or speaker - one that translates well to audio. Listen to it when you're commuting, exercising or pretending to be transcribing an interview. Loan it to colleagues.

Yahoo, according to the Wall Street Journal, has hired nine business columnists to write for the pure internet company. They plan to hire up to 30 writers. This is important in that it will begin a shift, however small, from traditional publishing to the digital system until the tipping point arrives. Know thyself?

How to Become a Copy Editor
A copy editor reads a manuscript with care, querying or correcting errors in grammar, word usage or sense; resolving inconsistencies; and often marking the manuscript for the printer. If you enjoy reading and writing and have a great ear for language, you may enjoy being a copy editor. Steps: Begin in high school and college by taking as many English and literature classes as possible. Consider that a good education in a broad array of subjects will also serve you well. General knowledge about a vast number of subjects is invaluable to a copy editor. Work for your school's newspaper or literary magazine; even if you're not copyediting, it's useful to learn about the process of putting together a newspaper, magazine or other publication. Take advantage of any faculty advisors the publication may have. Tell them about your interest in becoming a copy editor; they might be able to help you develop your skills. Read books that inform you about editing and the publishing process. One of the best is "Words Into Type."

95. A Writer's Guide To Understanding The Copyeditor
But that s why there are copyeditors. The more problems a writer can Do copyeditors and writers have an intrinsically antagonistic relationship?
http://www.sfwa.org/writing/copyed.htm
A WRITER'S GUIDE TO UNDERSTANDING THE COPYEDITOR
by Terry McGarry
Originally appeared in the Bulletin of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America permission Many copyeditors prefer to spell the word "copyeditor." I laughed when I got page proofs of a short story I had written about a copyeditor: the anthology's copyeditor had changed my character into a two-word protagonist. As author, I could have stetted my spelling, but I deferred to house style. After you have delivered a finished manuscript, and usually after your editor has gone over it, your publisher's managing editor assigns it to a copyeditor. The copyeditor prepares the manuscript for the typesetter, proofreading for typos and keying design elements. She also styles the manuscript, making sure that its spelling, punctuation, usage, and fonts are internally consistent and follow the publisher's house style. She checks for faulty grammar. Depending on the latitude afforded by the publisher (and whether the editor requested a light or medium copyeditfiction never gets a heavy copyedit), she will either recast grammatically incorrect sentences, shuffling the words into syntactic order without changing them, or she will suggest possible fixes in a query. And she keeps an eye out for errors of logic and continuity, querying things that seem physically impossible or that violate the internal logic of the book's universe. The copyedited manuscript is usually reviewed by people at the publishing housethe editor, the managing editor's staff, or both. Often the author gets to see it as well. The copy editor's queries are answered (called "deflagging" if queries have been written on Post-it Notes stuck to the pages), and if she has made changes the author or editor objects to, those changes are changed back. The manuscript then goes to a type house, where typesetters generate galleys or page proofs; these are read against the copyedited manuscript by one of the publisher's freelance proofreaders.

    Above the Line
: A term used to describe the editors who are at the very top of the masthead often separated from the rest of the staff by a line. Executive Editors, Managing Editors, Art Directors, and Deputy Editors are usually "above the line."
Acquisitions Editor : See Assigning Editor.
Art Director : S/he oversees all of the editorial (meaning not ads) art in the magazine, which includes design, photography, and illustrations. It is the highest art position on staff. Most Art Directors have Associate, Deputy or Assistant Art Directors under them. Sometimes the Art Director is called Design Director or Creative Director.
Assigning Editor : Refers to an editor who assigns stories, usually features, to freelance writers. This is usually not a title on a masthead, just a way to distinguish between to an editor who assigns stories to outside writers rather than one who edits and/or writes stories in-house. Generally an assigning editor is a senior editor or above, although now more associate editors are assigning editors as well. Also known as an Acquisitions Editor, but more in the book publishing world than the magazine world.
Assistant Editor : The next step after Editorial Assistant, usually it involves more editing and/or writing responsibilities, but not always.
