Good writing Start writers right — on the copy desk By Don Fry Every newly-hired reporter should spend the first month on the copy desk, working as a fledgling copy editor to get first-hand experience in everything copy editors do and know. Your copy desk knows everything going on in your newspaper. When I visit a newsroom to solve problems, I always spend several nights on the copy desk. Figuratively speaking, copy editors sit in the basement with transparent floors above them. From there, they can see everything, and it ain’t all pretty. Knowing the warts After one month on the copy desk, a writer will know how the whole system works. The visitor will experience that great shocker for the new editor: raw copy. We assume all reporters can spell, explain complex issues, follow the Stylebook, and write to length. We assume their desk editors apply the same skills to the copy that passes through them. What reaches the average copy desk each night dispels both assumptions. The visitor will watch talented copy editors trying to make sense of stories when they can’t reach the writer by phone, reconcile different spellings of names in body text and cutlines, and struggle to make pictures introduce stories they match only tangentially. The visitor will understand why we need teamwork and holistic thinking.

Why USC Links?
Christopher Scott Wyatt attended the Univerity of Southern California from August 1987 until December 1990. He graduated with degrees in journalism and English. This page is his attempt to help USC Alumni network in the proud ’SC tradition.

Journalism and English Links
Links to USC resources on the web While the business graduates of USC have countless Web sites (I checked via Google and was amazed), and there are more Greek alumni sites than houses on The Row, I located only one site for journalism alumni. Obviously, we have a lot to learn about networking. I hate to imagine my only chance of reconnecting with other USC alumni is when we move from one publication or media outlet to another. Worse, as a freelance editor and writer, I admit that I only see my cats some days… and they don’t always understand editing issues. I hope these links help visitors reconnect to USC, other alumni, and maybe some opportunities along the way.

Bloggers Writing Books; Demand For Copy Editors Rises
Yes, the blogosphere is built on mentioning other bloggers and giving them credit for slight, inconsequential things - blogfucking , we believe it's called. Still, we were surprised to see the New Yorker engaging in this kind of thing. In this week's issue, Daniel Radosh interviews ambitious ICM agent, Kate Lee , who he credits with "sifting through sloppy thinking, bad grammar, and blind self-indulgence for moments of actual good writing" when reading blogs [Disclosure: Gothamist met with Kate Lee last year, but, as we're prone to do, we got distracted by some other ... stuff ]. The only redeeming quote in the story comes from TMFTML , our favorite player-hater in the blogosphere: "what the fuck would I write about?" Au contraire, anonymous friend, Gothamist would definitely part money from our cold, dead hands to read a book by you, as long as there was a Marion Ettlinger photograph on the back.

Professional copy editing can help writers improve the presentation of their work and increase its chances of being taken on by a publisher. Do you know that spelling and grammar are not your strong points? Do you feel that your messy manuscript would have a better chance of publication if it were professionally prepared for press? Do you just want your work prepared for the printer by an expert so that you know it’s in really good shape? Publishers make sure that all the books they publish are copy edited before being sent to the printer. However, if you are an unpublished author, you might help your chances of publication by turning in a clean manuscript in the first place. Or do you intend to publish your book yourself (see our Self-publishing service) and want it to receive the benefit of professional copy editing, so that you can be sure you will take delivery of a printed book you can be proud of?

Luna had been deputy sports editor since joining the News in April 2001. "Detroit is a big pro town, but it also has two major universities, a plethora of high schools and lot of smaller universities," said Luna. Star Nick Moschella It happened in a flash, but it really was a work in progress. On a late January night, Palm Beach Post deputy sports editor Nick Moschella was at his desk when his boss, assistant managing editor/sports Tim Burke, and some high-level news executives stopped by. The news they presented Moschella was that Burke was becoming deputy managing editor of the paper and that Moschella would take over as sports editor. Burke arrived at the Post as sports editor in 1994 and elevated Moschella from assistant sports editor in charge of reporters to deputy sports editor in 1995. "Tim and I are like brothers; we hit it off right from the start," said the 47-year-old Moschella, a native of the Bronx who grew up in Rockland County and moved to Florida during high school.

    1. Have you used the best structure to support your message?
    2. Are your verbs compelling?
    3. Have you cut every unnecessary word?
    4. Do your grammar, spelling and punctuation disappear into the background leaving the focus on your ideas? 5. Is your style consistent? 6. Association of Freelance Editors Proofreaders and Indexers: Frequently Asked Questions The copy-editor reads a text to make sure, for example, that spellings of unusual names are consistent; that the author does not promise five examples and give only four; that the language used is clear and unambiguous; that figures in a table add up correctly; that headings and sub-headings are marked correctly for the typesetter; that references to illustrations are clear enough for the typesetter to place them correctly. Basically, the copy-editor micro-manages, the editor works at a macro level. The editor has the heaviest responsibility. It is the editor who reads a text first, and helps to decide whether it is publishable. The editor can be asked to move text around if it seems confused, to alter the running order of chapters, to suggest the removal or addition of material, all in conjunction with the author. A good source for further information is Copy-editing, by Judith Butcher, published by Cambridge University Press. 2. Is there much work available?
