Technology: A Blessing for Writers and Editors?
by Gene Bodzin Computers have changed the way writers and editors work. But are we getting the most from the new tools? Writers and editors use technology both to publish electronic documents and to prepare electronic data storage media—diskettes or tapes—for printing equipment so that paper copies can be produced. Many traditional ways of treating old concerns are no longer the best ways, and a number of new issues have arisen for those involved in preparing texts for publication today.
Editing on Screen or on Paper?
Editors who are print-oriented usually feel comfortable marking up hard copy; other editors may prefer to use electronic text. The reasons for each practice are convincing. On the one hand, paper is safer—with it, nobody can lose an entire day's editing by hitting the wrong button or because a machine has crashed. Paper pages are more accessible—more of the text can be seen at once and pages can be scanned more easily. In addition, a paper trail satisfies the need for a record of editorial changes. On the other hand, editing on-line is faster, text can be moved more easily, and each new version is clean. A key argument for editing electronically is that since it typically takes as long to input editing changes as it does to make them on paper, taking both steps doubles the time required for copy-editing and increases costs.

Here's to You, Cliché Writers Everywhere
The death of actress Ann Anne Bancroft this week produced a gaggle of "Mrs. Robinson" headlines - and the subsequent send-up of same by sharp-eyed (and sharp-tongued) headline watchers. They rightly skewer the "Here's to You" heds as predictable clichés . I'll go one step further (and this is not about copy editors vs. reporters, so back in your seats, kids): Clichés are the bane of good writing and their ubiquitous presence in newspapers directly undercuts efforts to reach younger readers, who prefer " surprise and humor ." [Read: The Readership Institute's work in at the Minneapolis Star-Tribune and Readership: Survival Lessons for the Future from Minneapolis Brian Montopoli of CJR Daily slices and dices the Bancroft heds most deftly in this piece , "Hard Day on the Rim." He writes: "There's gotta be something in the song, you think go back to the song. You get up from your cube, stare out the window. Start singing to yourself. Wait shit that's it! The chorus! It's so obvious! There's that part where Simon and Garfunkel croon, "Here's to you, Mrs. Robinson." Why not just that? Here's to you, Mrs. Robinson. It's so simple, but it says everything. • Nature of the Work
Writers and editors communicate through the written word. Writers develop original fiction and nonfiction for books, magazines and trade journals, newspapers, technical reports, company newsletters, radio and television broadcasts, movies, and advertisements. Editors select and prepare material for publication or broadcasting and supervise writers. Writers first select a topic or are assigned one by an editor. They then gather information through personal observation, library research, and interviews. Writers select and organize the material and put it into words that effectively convey it to the reader, and often revise or rewrite sections, searching for the best organization of the material or just the right phrasing. Newswriters prepare news items for newspapers or news broadcasts, based on information supplied by reporters or wire services. Columnists analyze news and write commentaries, based on personal knowledge and experience. Editorial writers write comments to stimulate or mold public opinion, in accordance with their publication's viewpoint. Reporters and correspondents, who may also write articles or copy for broadcast, are described elsewhere in this section of the Handbook Technical writers make scientific and technical information easily understandable to a nontechnical audience. They prepare operating and maintenance manuals, catalogs, parts lists, assembly instructions, sales promotion materials, and project proposals. They also plan and edit technical reports and oversee preparation of illustrations, photographs, diagrams, and charts.

By Mary Ellen Slayter The bloggers are coming!
The bloggers are coming!
And it looks like they all dropped their dictionaries. Should copy editors pick them up? From what I've seen purporting to be "citizen journalism" online, I sure hope so. Copy editing is at the heart of the discipline of verification that separates journalism from mere gossip, and yet I keep hearing that we're just a bunch of control freaks out to ruin the party. Far from bringing about the death of the blogosphere, thorough editing is what can save it from collapsing into inflammatory gibberish and what will make it possible for mainstream media companies to incorporate the best features of blogging into their brands. But first we have to stop acting like blogs are different from any other "content delivery method," which the bloggers love reminding us that our boring old newspapers are after all. Blogs are not any different. Entertainment is one thing, but online journalism still relies on the same principles of accuracy, fairness and clarity that we strive for every day in the newspaper. Copy editors are a crucial part of that in print, and they will become more so online as the medium matures. Second, we have to stop hiding behind language about liability. It doesn't matter if the courts rule that a blogger is responsible for his words, not the media company that publishes them. That is not a question of liability. It's one of credibility, our most valuable commodity. Regardless of what the fine print says, if your newspaper is hosting an amateur blog filled with libelous comments, horrid writing, unverified rumors and mundane nonsense, that content will be associated with your masthead, and it will damage it.

July 1988 - February 1993 Summary: When one becomes part of an institution as large and venerable as the Time-Life empire, a great deal of tradition and established procedure must be mastered. Along with learning my role in the operation, I also learned much about how editorial decisions are made, factors that affect what goes on the cover, the way Time's network of foreign correspondents is used, the value of research, and the interplay between powerful editors and powerful writers. At smaller publications, such as MIS Week , a copy editor gets to do some of everything: write headlines and captions, select and crop photos, design pages, cut stories to fit, and even write articles. At an organization as large as Time's , everything is specialized, and copy editors basically do nothing but copy editing (and some proofreading). However, this specialization, combined with a large staff and a leisurely weekly deadline (as opposed to a daily deadline) allows copy editors to devote a great amount of attention to detail.

In 1965, Raymond Picard, later holder of the Chair of French Literature at the Sorbonne, published in La Revue des Science Humaines a conservative assault on Roland Barthes and la nouvelle critique. Barthes responded in the following year with a counter-attack which now appears for the first time in English. Criticism and Truth (University of Minnesota Press, $25.00, cloth, $10.95 paper) has been translated by Katrine Pilcher Keuneman, who has also provided a fine introduction, helpful footnotes, and a section of background material on the names which crop up in the course of Barthes’s discussion. Roland Barthes The issue of clarity is taken up by Philip Thody in his engaging (and very clear) forward to the book. Thody ruminates on the way in which English academics — most markedly philosophers from Hume through Russell and Ryle — tend to gravitate toward ordinary language, as though they might be “expected to make their views clear to any of their colleagues in medicine or the sciences who might drop in for a chat about Structuralism or Phenomenology on his way to lunch.” Although Thody claims he is sympathetic with this style of philosophy, he still has Barthesian reservations: “I can see that such a preference is based upon the presupposition that the sceptically-minded, rationalistic, Anglo-Saxon professional middle classes are going to stay in power.”

The secret life of copy editors By ALEX CRUDEN
Detroit Free Press chief of copy desks You have two minutes, maybe. The page needs to go to press. Your immediate task is to write a headline. This one is for an article that says: "Shortly after a 7:30 a.m. takeoff from Metro Airport, a Northwest Airlines 100-seat jet bound for White Plains, N.Y., accidentally deposited two pieces of luggage onto the Mitchells' property." It goes on with details about the Huron Township couple and why the accident happened. Tell what happened in a half-dozen words, divided equally onto two lines. If you're Jim Rogers, you write: Two suitcases land before plane does Jim is one of about three dozen generally anonymous people who are the best-read writers at the Free Press. They're copy editors, and they write the big type, the headlines all readers see, the words that cause someone to read more or to toss the paper aside. If you are a copy editor, you also are, crucially, the last person to edit and check ALL the articles, listings, columnists, briefs, recipes and so on. So every word needs scrutiny. Of course, every sentence you want to change was written by a colleague who doesn't necessarily think your change is a good idea, even if the colleague has made that same mistake in five previous articles.
