Words About Words
To communicate about their work, copy editors use a number of terms that most people forgot after their last course in English composition (or maybe never knew at all). In addition to knowing how to make a poor sentence better, a copy editor has to be able to defend his or her decisions to writers, editors, and fellow copy editors. That means being able to talk the talk. This list also provides a good indication of the errors that copy editors commonly catch and correct.
antecedent
A word, phrase, or clause to which a pronoun refers, usually (but not always) one that precedes the pronoun.
Gary lives in the suburbs and commutes to his job in the city.
Gary's job is unpleasant because it requires that he deal with rude and surly people.
A possessive is not an appropriate antecedent:
Gary's job is a 45-minute commute from his home.
EDIT: Gary has a 45-minute commute to his job.
EDIT: Gary's job is a 45-minute commute from home.

The resumes themselves (which are actually private Web pages) will contain all the information an editor might need to judge and contact the writer. In some cases, resumes will include writing samples and/or links to spots on the Web where the writer's work appears. Updates are made to these Web-page resumes as often as possible, so if you have difficulty making contact, please keep trying. EDITORIAL HUMOR

      Significant Points
      • Competition is expected to be less for lower paying, entry-level jobs at small daily and weekly newspapers, trade publications, and radio and television broadcasting stations in small markets. Persons who fail to gain better paying jobs or earn enough as independent writers usually are able to transfer readily to communications-related jobs in other occupations.
Nature of the Work About this section Index Writers and editors communicate through the written word. Writers develop original fiction and nonfiction for books, magazines and trade journals, newspapers, technical reports, online distribution, company newsletters, radio and television broadcasts, movies, and advertisements. Editors Writers either select a topic or are assigned one by an editor. Then they gather information through personal observation, library and Internet research, and interviews. Writers select the material they want to use, organize it into a meaningful format, and use the written word to express ideas and convey information to readers. Often, writers revise or rewrite sections, searching for the best organization or the right phrasing.

If stories aren’t clear and concise, seminar leader Chris Wienandt said, a reader’s eyes may drift from articles to the Cartoon Network, or another diversion.
Wienandt focused on story tightening, major, minor and otherwise, in his seminar “Nip/Tuck: Trimming the Fat From Stories” at the American Copy Editors Society’s ninth-annual conference in Hollywood.
''NIP/TUCK: TRIMMING THE FAT FROM STORIES,'' presented by Chris Wienandt, Dallas Morning News Tight, bright sentences matter, Wienandt said, because bad writing can drive readers away from stories. Readers see muddled copy and say “why try.”
“One of the problems with stories is that they’re too damn long and boring,” he said. “They’re written in a way that’s not interesting ... they’re too jargony, too journalesy.”
Often, Wienandt said, tighter (and shorter) stories seem more inviting to readers, which may mean copy desks need to do the shortening. Cuts are sometimes both wise and necessary, he said; a 40-inch story won’t fit in a 20-inch hole.

Though they’d been reading and editing copy for years, some of them, it seemed, had never seen such a word, or heard it. McIntyre argued they shouldn’t have seen “crepuscular” in their newsrooms, even if he did once.
In his seminar “That Crepuscular Light: Ornamental Language and Metaphor” at the American Copy Editors Society’s ninth-annual conference in Hollywood, McIntyre said striving to make the newspaper writing lively and interesting is admirable.
''THAT CREPUSCULAR LIGHT: ORNAMENTAL LANGUAGE AND METHAPHOR,'' presented by John McIntyre, Baltimore Sun But, he said, language must fit its context. And though writers may ambitiously try for elegance, they may also fall flat, McIntyre said.
“If you are going to attempt literary writing, you are going to get judged by literary standards,” McIntyre said. “And the problem is writers are not the best judges of their work.”

A book doctor, a.k.a. an independent editor (this is the preferred term) is someone who, for a fee, will undertake to read and edit your manuscript for structure, style, plot, character development, continuity, and so on.
What's the difference between a book doctor/independent editor and an editor employed by a publishing house?
    • An in-house editor works with authors on a publisher's behalf, editing books prior to publication. She edits to her own taste but also to the publisher's standards. Any book acquired by a legitimate publisher will be edited in-house. This editing is part of the publication process, and the author isn't charged for it. A book doctor or independent editor is an independent contractor working directly for, and paid by, the author. What kind of editing is done, and how extensive, is entirely up to the author.
Most independent editors offer a number of different levels of editing, from which you can pick and choose. These may include:
