Marsha Norman Writers have often joked that writing is what you do after sorting the laundry, doing the dishes, vacuuming the rug, walking the dog, shopping for dinner, and washing the windows for the tenth time that week. If this sounds familiar, reverse the process: make writing your first priority. All the rest is what you do after writing
    • Prevention is the best cure for Writer's block.
Graham Greene came up with a fail-safe inoculation: Don't keep writing until you simply run out of dialogue for your characters to say. Stop writing when you still know clearly what the next line or even the next scene will be. This line that's been waiting all night to be written, primes your creative pump the following day. That's because you'll have those first words ready to go when you face that monitor or if you do it the old-fashioned way that piece of paper the next morning.

Writer's block sign of deeper problems
By Ellen Barry, Globe Staff, 12/16/2003 The way Ernest Hemingway had a drinking problem and Fyodor Dostoevsky had a gambling problem, Dr. Alice Flaherty, a Harvard neurologist, had a writing problem. During a severe bout of postpartum depression three years ago, she wrote so compulsively that the sight of a blank computer screen gave her a narcotic rush. Worried about damaging her family, Flaherty started taking a psychiatric drug to calm her mood swings and found that, although ideas still churned in her brain, she was no longer able to put them on paper. It was an excruciating case of writer's block. Thus begins her exploration of "hypergraphia" a term used by doctors to describe the overwhelming desire to write and its agonizing opposite. ADVERTISEMENT In her new book, "The Midnight Disease: The Drive to Write, Writer's Block and the Creative Brain," Flaherty lays out all that neurology has discovered about the artist's brain, from the strange profusion of literary giants with temporal lobe epilepsy to the composer Dmitry Shostakovich's certainty that musical notes radiated from a piece of shrapnel lodged in his brain. The drive to create, Flaherty concludes, is not the same thing as literary talent and doctors sometimes ignore it when they are prescribing medications. For her part, Flaherty chose to protect her drive, abnormal though it may be. As she finished the last page of her manuscript, she noted that it was 5:30 a.m., and she had been writing for so long that her legs had become numb.

Carol Snow, a mother of two from Fullerton, California, is a writer by trade. So she was unprepared for the resistance she faced from her second-grade daughter, Lucy, over writing. When Lucy brought home writing assignments from school, "It was torture," recalls Snow. "Lucy sat at the table, staring at a blank piece of paper, paralyzed. I tried to teach her how to brainstorm, I tried the whole who-what-why-when-how thing. Within five minutes, she was in tears."

    http://www.sss.uq.edu.au/linkto/phdwriting/phfaq07.html
The phrase 'writer's block' covers a variety of situations. In our experience, absolute writer's block - that is, where someone literally can't write anything at all, not even a note to a friend or a shopping list, for example - is very rare. If this is the case, then possibly you need to work individually with someone like a counsellor or learning adviser. In such cases, committing yourself to write for only fifteen minutes a day is often a starting point. This must be faithfully observed and then extended only slowly.
However, 'writer's block' usually means something less extreme. The way to overcome it, is to look at what is causing it. It could be that:
    • considering the whole finished 300 page product paralyses you. Not only do you not write a thesis at one go, you seldom do that even with a chapter. Theses are written small section by small section. It is paradoxical in a way; you do need to keep in mind the whole thread of the argument, but at the same time you need to break down the whole thesis into smaller parts and know how they fit together. You then work on these smaller, identified parts. Often when you come across complex ideas and need to make them clear and linked to your argument, you should be working seriously just on a single paragraph.
    • working on specific small parts has fragmented the whole and, in a sense, you've lost the plot. This can manifest itself in trying to rearrange the pieces in several ways, cutting and pasting, and, although being very busy, never feeling satisfied with the result. It is important to stop being busy and spend time to recover the plot or story for your thesis and rebuild the logical framework. You could write down the main points in your argumentfor example the aims, what you did, what you found, what it meansand then fill in from this, as it were, adding the detail to each part, feeding your content more and more into a structure without losing the bigger picture.

Monkey See, Monkey Do By Jason Gargano One of the more interesting developments on the local literary scene (if there really is one) in 2001 was the emergence of Covington-based underground "publishing firm," Trained Monkey Press Founded by Dayton, Ohio, native Joe Bartusch, Trained Monkey Press focuses on what they call "unpretentious poetry, prose and art" and that's exactly what they deliver. In this age of limited economic risk, offbeat and challenging (i.e., original and passionate) work often gets left behind in favor of more "marketable" material. That's why Trained Monkey Press is unique: They put stuff out into the world that probably would never reach the eyes of potentially interested readers. The idea for Trained Monkey Press came during some kitchen-table discussions about two years ago and finally bore fruit this year with the publication of Joey Shannanagins Catches the Flu , a collection of poems from area writers that Bartusch calls, "the serious one."
