Writer’s block seems to be a considerable problem beginners struggle with. I'm not saying that only beginners experience this blank page phenomenon, but it seems like it's a much more prominent problem with beginners. It’s possible that beginners are overwhelmed with the amount of information and advice out there for them, and are confused on what to write. Maybe it's just that experienced writers have more practice at managing writer's block, or no longer get it at all. Maybe more experienced writers write more often, therefore decreasing the chance of writer’s block. At any rate, most of us experience writer's block from time to time, and there are some tactics that can help lessen it. Try these strategies to help you lessen writer's block:
          Take Notes:
Go buy a notebook just for story ideas. Make sure it's smaller than 5 X 7 so you can carry it with you. Take this notebook with you everywhere, and jot down ideas as you get them. When you are feeling inspired, take out your notebook and brainstorm.

One of the biggest, most terrifying problems plaguing modern civilization is, without any fear of contradiction, hyperbole. Deep in my heart, I believe hyperbole gone amok will likely bring an end to this world in which we exist. But how, you ask, does this affect me? Well, you ask possibly the greatest question ever asked since questions began. The answer to how hyperbole affects you is simple: it doesn’t. But it got this article started, and got me writing.
          How Do I Start?
I’ve met many writers who have complained that their biggest problem was writing a lead to whatever article, feature or story they wanted to write. To me, the answer has always been simple: Just sit down and start writing.
          Quick Tips
Still can't get going. Here are a couple ideas: Think of a conversation you had earlier in the day. Start typing it out. Wish you had said something differently? Here's your chance. Write it out, regardless of whether it has anything to do with the story you want to write. It will help, however, as you'll be able to feel the creative juices beginning to flow. Also, try starting your article, story or book in the middle rather than the start. Or start at the end. Sometimes a story needs to be approached from different angles before you can get immersed in it.

Overcoming writer's block doesn't have to involve your head and a brick wall!
Writer's block is one of those things that gets worse the more you think about it, don't you find?
However much you try and forget the idea of writer's block, it still lurks there, increasing stress and anxiety and making it even less likely that the words will come. The more you try to ignore it, the bigger it gets.
A new approach is required!
Hypnosis can help with overcoming writer's block because it works at an unconscious level - getting away from the ineffective conscious effort. After all, that's where your best ideas come from, so it makes sense to use an approach that works on the same level.
The deep relaxation hypnosis brings, coupled with your own unconscious abilities to write can effortlessly restart your suppressed writing process.

WRITER'S BLOCK BRYANT PARK INSTALLATION READING When:
Where: Bryant Park, New York, NY PEN American Center, National Coalition Against Censorship, and American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression sponsored this reading to reflect on the freedoms to write and read seventy years after the Nazi book burnings. Frances FitzGerald, Margo Jefferson, Adelle Lutz, Rick Moody, Elizabeth Nunez, Grace Paley, and Francine Prose joined Master of Ceremonies Reno and the free expression community in New York to mark the opening of Sheryl Oring's installation, Writer's Block. Writer's Block, Sheryl Oring's installation of sculptural cages filled with 600 typewriters from the 1920s and 1930s, premiered in 1999 on Berlin's Bebelplatz, scene of the largest of the Nazi book burnings. Intended both to evoke the 1933 event and to provoke greater examination of contemporary threats to freedom of expression, the installation has also been shown at the Jewish Museum, in Berlin; the Hungarian National Library, in Budapest; and the Boston Public Library. Bryant Park was selected as the site for the New York show because of its historical significance: in May 1943, on the tenth anniversary of the German book burnings, New Yorkers gathered here in commemoration and protest.

Writers' Block: Are We Having Fun Yet?
In which we discuss that moment in your life when you're sitting at the kitchen table at three-twenty-seven in the morning with a cup of coffee that once might have tasted like something other than toxic waste but that now would make drinking from Love Canal back in the 60's preferable; when you've bitten the head off of every human being who has dared to breathe loudly in your presence for the past week; when the sound of fingers on keys (or even the scritch of a pen on paper) makes you want to weep; when any inspiration you ever had is now dead and mummified and collecting dust in the corner; when you don't remember the last time you strung three words together that were recognizably English; and you haven't written. You haven't written.

Editor's Note: The following is an excerpt from "Any Dummy Can Write a Book: I Wrote This One," a work in progress by NAGC President-Elect Mike Cox. A good writer can take almost any idea no matter how arcane and turn it into a story or a book. If you doubt that, the next time you go to a book store, check out the titles in the pop psychology/self help sections. At least two writers, for instance, have written books on writer's block, a condition they've either never suffered or one they certainly learned to overcome. Though the first book on writer's block did not appear until 1985, the issue has been a popular topic for a long time. As a mental health threat for wordsmiths, writer's block is way overrated. Sure, I've had occasional trouble getting started, but I don't recall ever being entirely blocked in my writing. So far, I have not needed a prescription for literary Viagra. When I did experience some difficulty, it usually was when I was faced with writing something that someone else wanted me to write. Clearly, the best way to beat writer's block is to like writing. If you don't, you really shouldn't be doing it. Beyond enjoying the process of writing, the second way to avoid writer's block is to be interested in what you're writing about.

The Writer's Block is a special section at the Hall of Heroes where everyday people can share their writings, poetry, art work, and other creative materials. Since launching the HomeOfHeroes.com website, numerous people have shared their own writings with us from time to time. A few have even shared stories or poems that were favorites of a Medal of Honor recipient friend, father, or other relative. We hope you will find some inspiration, education, and perhaps even some motivation from the stories and other materials shared in these pages. Stories POETRY ART Special Features A year ago the 8th grade students at SACRED HEART Elementary School in Ville Platte conducted a special study on heroism, patriotism, and the Medal of Honor. Each student adopted a Medal of Honor recipient from history, researched his life and heroism, and then wrote about him. The culmination of this effort was a 40 page newspaper, published by the local newspaper. Pictured at left is the cover for that project, featuring a photo of MOH recipient Jefferson DeBlanc visiting with some of the students. Click on it to read the pages written by these students. Writers' Block
A bright workspace for free agents. From: Issue 40 November 2000 Page 88 By: Matt Villano Photographs by: Doug Fogelson After nine years of working from a tiny desk in the corner of his tiny apartment in midtown Manhattan, freelance writer Phil Scott knew that he needed to get a life. He spent whole days without seeing another living soul, weeks without doing in-person interviews, and months without exchanging ideas with his professional colleagues. "I was a hermit in one of the most populous cities in the world," he says. "Writing is supposed to be creative, but because of my solitude, my situation was a total drag." Then Scott, 39, discovered 72 Mad, an airy, bright, and sometimes raucous workspace for free agents that is located on the 12th floor of a former sweatshop on Madison Avenue. The commune, as some call it, was founded in 1997 by Basia Hellwig, 48, and Anne Mollegen Smith, 54, magazine editors who now run Qwerty Communications Inc., a publishing consultancy. Hellwig and Smith lease the entire floor of the building and parcel out individual spaces to freelancers like Scott and 24 other tenants, most of whom are writers, editors, designers, and consultants.

Writing a Research Paper
The First Draft
Procrastination and writer's block
Procrastination (a.k.a. "putting things off" or "waiting 'til the last minute") usually occurs because students are afraid of how slow or imperfect their drafting is and therefore wait for pressure to become the ultimate motivator. As a result, students typically hand in first-draft quality material because the tight constraints didn't leave them time to even reflect let alone revise Procrastination is a habit. It's a way some writers have learned to approach writing because of negative experiences they've had in the past like 'blocking,' or getting stuck. But "needing pressure" is no excuse to procrastinate. If pressure keeps you cooking, there are other ways to create it besides waiting until the wee hours of the morning on a paper's due date. A week or two

This is writer's block. Fortunately, a few helpful techniques make it possible to overcome the challenge of writer's block. Experiment Try to write in different places, at different times, and with different writing instruments. Freewrite - Choose one sentence in a paragraph and write a paragraph about it. Then choose one sentence from that paragraph and do it again. Cluster - Choose key words and ideas; then write associated ideas and words in clusters around them. This process often forms new ideas. Be flexible Be willing to throw out sections of text that are causing problems or just don't work. Follow a routine Follow a routine to get into the writing mood. Try activities like wearing comfortable clothing, using a certain pen, or listening to a particular CD or type of music. Move Physically move around, stretch, or walk.

Eight Ways to Conjure Your Writing Genie
  • Shake off "Impostor Syndrome" Everyone communicates, and a lot of people write, but few people dare to call themselves "writers". If you feel like an impostor, take a deep breath and remind yourself of your unique purpose and how important it is. Or take on a fictional persona and write through that mask.
  • Conjure Your True Voice If you're at a loss for words, try meeting a friend for tea and talking your way through the material, or even talking out loud to yourself. Your spoken words might not be publishable, but once you've got 'em down on paper, you can edit to your heart's content.
  • Write it as a Letter Submitting written work can be scaryespecially if it's going to be read by The Powers That Be. But you don't have to think about those Powers when you're writing; in fact, it's probably better not to pay them any mind until the last few editing stages, after you've already squeezed out every last idea and captured it on paper. So when you're still writing, why not imagine you're writing a letter telling your closest confidante about your project? Try starting your work "Dear ", and you might tap into a fountain of lovely, loose conversational prose.

Stalled Careers, Writer's Block, and Monsters Under the Bed
    by Melisa Michaels
Hello, my name is Melisa and I'm a survivor of bad sales records.
There's a reason I've opened with a line that sounds as though it belongs in a twelve-step meeting. A twelve-step program wouldn't be a bad plan for writers whose careers have stalled out. It's something "nice people" don't talk about, but it can happen to any of us, anywhere, at any time. It can be life-threatening, it's something outsiders assume one could have prevented, and it responds well to therapy. Sharing horror stories would show us that we are not alone and that we are not to blame: sharing the trials and tribulations of our recovery would show us how to accept responsibility for the things we can control while relinquishing responsibility for the things we can't: and sharing our secret shame would show us that it is not, in fact, shameful. When my career crashed and burned, I didn't know any of that, and there was nobody to tell me. I was isolated as many writers are from any sort of peer group. It had been six or eight years since I had lived in the SF Bay Area and hung out with other writers, and I'd never heard of any of them failing once they got started. I had no idea it had ever happened to anybody else, and I certainly didn't know what to do about it. I was so stunned I hardly knew how to get my shoes on the right feet in the mornings. I felt like an impostor: seven published books and perhaps a dozen short stories notwithstanding, I wasn't really a writer after all: everybody knows that
