The Art of Writing Instant Muse Utilities "Inspiration may be a form of superconsciousness, or perhaps of subconsciousnessI wouldn't know. But I am sure it is the antithesis of self-consciousness." Aaron Copland Welcome to The Art of Writing Instant Muse page, a gateway to writing inspiration. There are two writing prompt Muses to choose from: the Poetry Generator , which produces a first line of poetry from lists of random words, and the Story Starter , which furnishes the writer with elements for a story character details, themes, settings, etc. These utilities are based on the principle of random input, a creativity technique involving the use of random (rather than preconceived) words, ideas, or concepts as a springboard for writing. This technique is useful both for beginning writers and for those suffering from "writer's block." As the quote above suggests, the best way be become more creative is to loosen up and not worry about things being "perfect." Approach these tools in a spirit of curiosity, humor, and play: you'll be amazed at what results! Most writers have experienced that frustrating condition when words just don't come and the page looks blank or the cursor blinks impatiently. Here are some suggestions for unblocking. Create a word processing file in which you have written a working outline of the assignment. Begin filling in the outline with whatever words, phrases, or sentences that come to mind, beginning with the section that is easiest for you. (Don't worry at this point about issues such as grammar, sentence structure, or spelling. You can work on these areas after you have written your ideas down.) Write a friendly letter to your intended audience stating the problems you are having with getting started.

Writer's Block: Is It All in Your Head?
by Leslie What
Nearly every writer has an opinion about the causes or treatment of writer's block, even when that writer doubts the condition actually exists, either because she or he hasn't experienced it personally, or because the symptoms resolved without outside assistance. Is writer's block real or is it all in your head? The answer could be both. As neuropsychologist Elkhonon Goldberg points out in his book The Executive Brain : "The distinction between the 'diseases of the brain' and 'diseases of the soul' is becoming increasingly blurred." Goldberg and others have written about something known as "Executive Functions", complex mental functions that are controlled by the pre-frontal cortex, also known as the frontal lobes. Executive functions are those higher-level thought processes that enable us to plan, sequence, prioritize, organize, initiate, inhibit, pace, self-monitor, and sustain behaviors despite distractions in pursuit of our defined goals. Executive functions allow us to make adjustments and refine strategies along the way, so that if the roof caves in while you're writing Chapter Four, you can take a break and return to the project after arranging for roofers.

Back to Plurals and Possessives!
Possessives (that is Ann's car), usually take an apostrophe. The exception is Possessive Pronouns which do not! (its, his, hers, theirs, ours, whose, etc.) Examples:
"What is its name?" Jane asked the dog's owner.
Whose dog is that?" Jane asked her neighbor.
"Is that snow shovel ours or yours?" Jane asked her neighbor.
With words like its/it's, whose/who's, you only use the apostrophe, when you can substitute the words "it is" or "who is". In other words the apostrophe is only used as a contraction, not to denote a possessive.

Have you truly revealed the “humanity" or soul of your character, their inner and outer life (emotions, fears, psychological, physical, and “surface” traits)? How can your audience relate to each of your characters? Does Big Henry, the protagonist in your novel, ever overcome his phobia or fear of death? If so, how? Do you expose why Sarah Sue might be afraid of marriage and opening up to true love? Has her past history of abuse and domestic violence frightened and/or ‘hardened’ her, preventing her from merging with her soul-mate? Try summing up your book in one sentence and writing it in your journal. Try writing a summary about it, one that might possibly be featured on the back or inside flap of your book and asking other authors, family, and friends what they think. Send it via email attachment or send them a hard copy in the mail. Ask them if they are encouraged to read further? What is their first response? How do these trusted sources feel about your opening line, your opening paragraph, first chapter, or ending? How do you?

Effective Strategies for Avoiding Writers' Block
What Causes Writers' Block
Writer's block is often caused by conflicted feelings. We want the writing to be perfect and we want the damned thing done as soon as possible. We know what we know but we don't know what our readers know. We know how the memo should sound, but we don't have all the facts we need. We know everything about the software, but we don't know what an article should look like. We know what we have to say but we are afraid that it won't measure up to our expectations or to our readers'. All of these feelings are natural and normal. Everyone finds writing a challenge. Many writers, however, compound their problems by employing weak writing strategies. When these methods fail, they give up.
Weak Strategies for Dealing with Writers' Block
: Using trial and error
Since our short-term memory is limited, trying to juggle in your head all the possible ways to phrase something usually means we repeat the same rejected phrases over and over. One way to avoid this is to make a quick list of alternative phrases.

How to Get Rid of Writer's Block
You've been staring at your computer screen for hours. You know that fast-paced feature article or short story is there, somewhere, just waiting to come out. If only you could write something - anything! All writers know about writer's block. But you needn't let writer's block ruin your writing aspirations. Move those annoying, invisible writing obstacles out of the way. Steps: Choose a subject for your piece that gives you a surge of energy. Are your emotions invested in this project? If not, look for a new subject or a fresh idea. A less-than-interesting topic will make the best of writers feel blocked. Free associate. Sometimes a writer's tendency toward perfectionism stops him dead cold in his tracks. Give yourself 15 minutes to be totally free of your "inner critic." Set a timer and start typing - write whatever pops into your head, even if it is total gibberish, a shopping list, words that rhyme - whatever. The idea is to get your creative juices flowing. Some writers do this exercise every day before they begin writing. Read the work of your favorite writer. There is nothing like inspired, well-composed prose to make you want to pick up a pen (or put your fingers on a keyboard).

Notes by Hugh Cook Writer's Block Practical Advice for Dealing with Writer's Block Writer's Block: Summary 1. Force yourself to sit in a chair for an hour with pen and paper in front of you.
2. Try writing simple declarative sentences, for example "Jack met Jill". (Okay, it's not Jane Austen, but it gets us from A to B, laying down a skeleton which we can flesh out later, if necessary.)
3. Try pictures. A resource for shapes, colors, textures.
4. Draw a picture (if you're not Picasso then a stick figure picture is okay) or a floor plan or a map.
5. Work hard (even if fruitlessly) then back away from the work and go do something else, like walking, or fishing, or having a hot bath. Something that does not tie up the mind but, rather, leaves it free to wander. Writer's Block: Details 1. Force yourself to sit in a chair for an hour with pen and paper in front of you. Try it.

Breaking Through Writer's Block
By Troy M. Hughes Remember that scene in the film Throw Mama From the Train For writers that feeling can be a very scary thing. It is frustrating, even suffocating. It is as if we have just switched off the part of ourselves that is able to create, to make sense, to write. We hear a lot about the causes of Writer's Block: stress (related and non-related to what you are writing), fatigue, burn-out. There are as many causes for it as there are writers, because everyone works and deals with life in his or her own way. We all deal with block in our own ways as well. What I would like to offer here are some ideas for avoiding block altogether, and some for dealing with it. The stock answer for getting through a block is to "write through it". The theory here would seem to be that getting yourself over the hump, so to speak, will help you to keep your work moving along. Going back and fixing up the rough edges is for editing and rewriting. This has worked for me in the past. One writer friend is what I call a note taker; she writes notes to herself within the piece when she hits those patches that she is not sure about. For example: "The rain fell like a wild horse, beating down fiercely, dancing off the ground (Note: Not sure this presents the vision I need here...work with it)."

A Conversation With Lawrence Block
by Claire E. White New York Times bestselling mystery author Lawrence Block continues to rack up awards and rave reviews in equal measure. He is amazingly prolific, and has that rare ability to write equally well in numerous genres. His first popular creation was Evan Tanner, the Cold War era spy who never sleeps (his sleep center was destroyed in the Korean War). Part James Bond, part Bertie Wooster, and part Sir Lancelot, Tanner hops his way from country to country and from beautiful companion to beautiful companion doing super secret spy work, stumbling into nascent revolutions, and supporting obscure political causes. Tanner was placed in deep freeze at the end of the 1960s, and, to the immense delight of his fans, was recently unfrozen in the bestselling Tanner on Ice . For those that love a good humorous caper story, it doesn't get any better than the Tanner novels.
