Okay, DiGenti, why do you write?

By Vic Digenti
Steve Robertson has lived in this community for over thirty-seven years. During this time he has been an educator in the Duval County School System and recently retired from his position of Assistant Principal at a local school. In 1998, he became involved with local author, G. W. Reynolds III of the "Jetty Man" series as a cover artist, editor and illustrator for his novels. The novels and illustrations can be seen at www.jettyman.com. Like many people, Mr. Robertson had always wanted to be an author. With the publication of his highly successful first novel, "Ranch Boy," it became a reality. He now has a second book in print, "Acorns of Love and Wisdom," which is a lovely little book of poetry. Mr. Robertson now has two more books ready to be published. The first is a "how to" book "Soccer Made Easy For Americans," which will be available in mid-October, and the second is a novel, "Bottom Time." Check out his website www.ranchboybooks.com This column is dedicated to those who write, those who aspire to be published, and those who have published. It is also for those who enjoy good poetry and prose or would like to read the stories of how other authors began. Look for many guest writers and authorities to be featured here. Feel free to write Steve with suggestions and/or comments at: coachrtoo@yahoo.com. Also contact Steve if you would like to contribute as a guest writer to this column.

By Pat Nason
UPI Hollywood Reporter
Los Angeles, CA, Jun. 3 (UPI) Contract talks between the Association of Motion Picture and Television Producers and the Writers Guild of America appear to have reached a blind alley, if not a dead end, but neither side is talking about a work stoppage in Hollywood just yet. Hollywood studios and producers have put what they called their final offer on the table, but the Writers Guild of America called the proposal unacceptable and said it would continue to negotiate "as long as it takes to reach a fair agreement." The AMPTP offer included higher payments for most types of scripts and more money for health benefits. But producers insisted they will not raise residual payments for DVD sales or Internet movie distribution a major point of contention for Hollywood unions that currently reap little of the burgeoning DVD revenue stream. Nick Counter, chief negotiator for the AMPTP, told the Los Angeles Times the studios and producers need the DVD revenue to cover the skyrocketing costs of production.

Writers block: fantasy or frustration?
Written by ^ MinorKey
Wednesday, May 11, 2005, 3:14 AM in Poetry Prose Feature Article Writer's Block: fantasy or frustration? The term Writer's Block bothers me. It has become a catch-all phrase that hides a multitude of distractions, problems, preferences and emotions. The absurdity of the term is simply captured. How often have you seen deviants complain in their journal that they have writer's block?
How can they have writer's block if they are writing about it in their journal? Really?
Okay, so it's easy to argue against that last observation, but hopefully it got you thinking about what writer's block is and when it does or doesn't apply to you. My point here is not that writer's block doesn't exist, but that the term has no real definition – it doesn't really mean anything. It's used to cover an incredibly wide variety of reasons for being unable to write. And my issue with that is that many of these reasons are excuses, apologies, pretext or defence, none of which really deserve to be dignified with the application of a term that suggests a respectable, almost medical-sounding condition (it reminds me of constipation).

Overcoming
Writer's Block
Overcoming Writer's Block For many writers the worst part of the writing experience War and Peace with one hand. Carry with you a pocket-sized notebook in which you can scribble ideas for writing as they come to you. How often have you been stopped at a red-light and a great idea has come into your head? It's so wonderful that you know you'll remember it when you get home, but when you sit down at the table, pen in hand, all you remember is the fact that you had a good idea an hour ago. Part of the writing experience is learning that good ideas do not always come to us when we need them. We must learn to catch ideas as they come to us, fortuitously, even as we're about to fall asleep at night. People who tell you that physical exercise is important for mental activity are telling the truth. If nothing's happening on the computer screen or paper, take a walk around the block. Hit the treadmill or tennis courts or drive to the gym. But take your notebook with you. Fresh blood will be flowing through your brain and jogging might just jog something loose in your head. It happens. Another trick is to start in the middle of your writing project. Avoid that problem of getting started by starting on a part of the project that interests you more and then come back to the introductory matter later. This sounds a bit like starting to earn your second million dollars before you've earned your first, but it's really not a bad idea in any case, because sometimes it's easier to say where you're going after you know where you've been. After all, your readers will never know you wrote the introduction last (another joy of word-processing technology!). One final maneuver around the old Writer's Block: talk over your paper with a friend, or just blab away into a tape recorder (even better). Play the tape back and write down what you hear in

HOME ABOUT US WHAT'S NEW? FEEDBACK ... CONTACT US WRITING CAPTIVATING DIALOGUE How to Overcome Writers' Block You're off to a great start, everything is going along fine, but suddenly the words stop coming. You know where you want to go but how are you going to get there? What do you write next? You've ground to a halt. You're out of ideas. You're stuck!
There's a name for this. It's called "writers' block" and it hits all of us sooner or later. I know, because I've wrestled with it many times. I sit down at the computer and just cannot think of what I want to say next.
There are lots of ways to deal with this, however, so don't despair. Just consider yourself in the company of most of the writers in the world and learn a few tips from them.
The first thing to do is to sit down at that desk! If you walk around saying, "Oh, I just don't feel like writing today. I'll wait until I can think of something," that will be the end of your story. I've read dozens of articles by well-known and even very famous writers who say that the hardest part of writing is actually sitting down and getting to it. It's even harder when you know you're stuck.
I've been known to wash the kitchen floor in order to avoid my computer on some occasions, and if you were a member of my family you'd know how much I hate that particular chore. In fact, my son came home from school once, walked into the kitchen, and said, "Uh-oh, Mom must be stuck with her writing again. The kitchen floor's clean!"

In THE CAPTIVE MUSE, a psychotherapist and poet explains what causes writer's block or artist's block and what enables writers and artists to work. Excerpt from a Talk by the Author :
What causes the difficulties that writers and artists often encounter? How are we to understand writer’s block or other creative blocks and inhibitions? Why do even productive writers and artists, who may love writing or making art, often dread to approach page or canvas, experience anxiety about their work, or live with inner voices of criticism and self doubt? In the Captive Muse I refer to those inner voices that say, "Who ever you told you were a painter? a writer? a poet? You call that a painting? A story? a poem?"
