Writer's block ad-blocking software
July 12, 1999

by Nancy Dillon INTERACTIVE
Is it fair to withold Web content from people who avoid ads? Yes No View Results (IDG) People who aren't willing to put up with Internet advertisements aren't going to get their Internet content for free. That's the message that Mind's Eye Fiction is sending to its Web audience. Industry analysts say they agree with the concept, but not with the tactic that the Houston-based fiction publisher is taking. Mind's Eye has announced that a new JavaScript program on the company's Web server will prevent visitors with ad-blocking software from reading story endings for free. If readers insist on keeping their ad blocking software turned on, they can access the site's new pay-per-view e-commerce system and pay 16 cents per story. "It's a principle thing," said Ken Jenks, editor-in-chief of Mind's Eye. "I just don't like it when people pick my pocket.'' Jenks said his company pays authors by page view, and the company's ad agency pays Mind's Eye by banner impression.

How to overcome writers block
How to overcome writers block. Sometimes we use that age old expression as an excuse. What is really behind writer's block and how can you prevent it from happening?
I dare to say there's no such thing as writer's block. Now all the writers want to jump through their computer screens and strangle me. Yes, writer's block happens. It's real and it's frustrating for any writer. But could it be that we're hiding behind that age-old excuse? Using "writer's block" as a mask for our lack of research, lack of imagination, lack of focus, and lack of confidence. We wake up one morning and head to the computer just like every other day. We bring up that white screen and rack our brains for something to write about, only our brains seem just as blank. So we get up, have a cup of coffee, maybe turn on the tv. We walk around the house and realize we need to take out the trash. Two hours later, we realize we haven't written a thing. "Oh, well" we say. "It's just writer's block." The truth is we didn't want to write.

The Writing Center's Guide to Avoiding Writer's Block
Use freewriting, brainstorming, journal writing, writing to the limit, or other informal kinds of writing to explore what you already know about your assignment. You may be pleasantly surprised to discover you already have a fairly large fund of information on the topic. 2. Use the same strategies to explore how you feel about an assignment. If you don't want to do the assignment, such informal writing may help you to determine the source of your resistance. 3. Trick yourself into caring about an assignment by varying your perspective on it. Try writing informally about the topic to several audiences. 4. Write an imaginary dialogue with your instructor about why he or she made this particular assignment. 5. Talk to and work collaboratively with other students in the class. Be sure, however, to move beyond mere complaining about your fate. 6. Break the project down into smaller, more manageable, more easily completed writing tasks. 7. Begin the draft with a focal question that you will attempt to answer in your essay. Write the question in large capital letters across the top of the page or on a post-it stuck next to your computer screen.

30. ASGS: Best Of Doc-Talk--Writers Block
Oh, yeah, PSsometimes writer s block is my clue that there s a conceptual problem Also don t give yourself a deadline when you have writer s block.
http://www.asgs.org/WrtrsBlk.html
BEST OF DOC-TALK: Writer's Block
A TAMU Doc-talker wrote Help. Here I sit reading news groups and procrastinating. The dissertation needs to be in by June and I have this paralyzing attack of writer's block. Do any of you PhDs or soon-to-be PhDs out there have any suggestions for overcoming this problem? They'd be greatly appreciated. Dear Doc-talker, The standard approaches to dealing with writer's block are to: 1. Schedule a regular time five days a week (2-6 hrs depending on what you have) to work on the dissertation and force yourself to spend the time involved with your dissertation in some way. Make work on the dissertation routine. Recognize that doing a dissertation (from start to finish) takes about 2400 hrs for a 200 pg dissertation, of which one third is actual writing. So you have about 800 hrs of writing (I'm assuming writing is "all" that remains) between now and the end of May. Look at your calendar and find those hours. 2. When you sit down to write, identify what stage of the writing you're in (drafting your argument, summarizing literature, revising (the content), editing (the format, spelling, grammar, etc.) . Unless you know what stage you're at, you won't know what to do next. Many students (especially smart ones) have never gone through the process of writing a draft, rewriting and rewriting the draft, and then editing it for the advisor. They've been smart enough to whip out papers in a single draft and edit them lightly for submission. The dissertation REQUIRES rewriting because that's how you get insight about what you're writing. So you need to rewrite the same chapter several times to ensure you gain insight.

WDVX features "Writer's Block" every Wednesday from 10pm to 11pm Eastern Standard time. Dedicated to the independent singer songwriter. Host, Karen E Reynolds , a performing songwriter herself, created this forum to give attention to original artists that, even though they don't have backing from a "major label", are quality performers that deserve listening to.
The "Writer's Block" format is simple...we want to introduce you to great music, created by great folks. Whether you like Blues, Americana, Country, Folk, or Rock, the show offers a little of everything for every listener. Live interviews, live broadcasts, prerecorded shows, along with airing cuts off the artists CDs, Writer's Block is always a surprise. Karen even takes the show "on the road" and presents "Writer's Block In The Round" , a live performance version featuring some of todays premier performing songwriters. But one thing you can always be sure of...you're going to hear the emerging original artists right here, on WDVX , and we're going to tell you where these folks are playing, and how to find out more about them.

Writer's block. It's the writer's worst nightmare, or so I'm told anyway. Like most writers of short, list-based, how-to-write articles, I've only written short, list-based, how-to-write articles that rely on recycled bromides and long-standing conventional wisdom. This means I can skip all of the frustrating (and, above all, unprofitable) work of actually crafting an original piece of writing. So, I wouldn't know anything about writer's block. That said, let's look at the three most common writers block scenarios along with some handy tips for "breaking through the block." Scenario 1: Can't Get Out of the Starting Gate Symptoms of the Block: You know that you have the next Great American Novel burbling inside of you, one so brilliant that it would make Philip Roth trade his pen for a box of fingerpaints, but you just can't seem to get anything on the page. Likely Cause of the Block: You are lazy. Throughout your life, have your parents, teachers, bosses, or significant others called you a shiftless good-for-nothing who will never amount to anything? Was your last shower more than three days ago? Do you earn less than $20,000 a year? If so, you're most likely lazy.
