Mouth guards worn for Olympic sports, what about chess?
?April is National Facial Protection Month focuses on sports injury prevention than teeth?
Rosemont, IL (April 1, 2002)?Whether or not chess becomes an Olympic (winter or summer) sport, you certainly do not see chess players wearing mouth guards. You do see hockey players, skiers, boxers, wrestlers and other Olympian athletes wearing them. You also see non-Olympians, such as roller bladers, baseball players, skateboarders and soccer players, wearing protective mouth and face gear. What?s the deal?
The boys? parents do not mind paying for orthodontics, which is why they also do not mind paying for mouth guards.
The month of April finds people, children and adults alike, outside playing sports and exercising. Such healthy activities, however, can turn unhealthy when injuries occur. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the American Association of Orthodontists are sponsoring the third annual ?April is National Facial Protection Month.? Facial protection and injury prevention are the key messages from this ?team? of dental specialists.

Updated August 13, 2004 This year the Olympic Games return to their birthplace in Greece. But much has changed since the first games were held there almost three millennia ago. National Geographic News spoke with Tony Perrottet, author of The Naked Olympics: The True Story of the Ancient Games, to hear what the first Olympics were really like. The Olympic Games were held every four years from 776 B.C. to A.D. 394, making them the longest-running recurring event in antiquity. What was the secret of the games' longevity? It was the sheer spectacle of it. Sports [were] one part of a grand, all-consuming extravaganza. It was first and foremost a religious event, held on the most sacred spot in the ancient world. It had this incredible aura of tradition and sanctity. Today's Olympics is a vast, secular event, but it doesn't have the religious element of the ancient Olympics, where sacrifices and rituals would take up as much time as the sports. And there were all these peripheral things that came with the festival: the artistic happenings, new writers, new painters, new sculptors. There were fire-eaters, palm readers, and prostitutes.
