History
Freestyle wrestling was on the first modern Olympic program in 1896, with just two weight classes. It was dropped in 1900, but restored in 1904, and it's been on the program ever since. From 1938 through 1980, medals were based on round robin competition. The wrestler with the fewest penalty points in the final round won the gold medal. If two or more wrestlers had the same number of penalty points in the in the final round, standings were based on the number of penalty points in previous rounds. For those years, the number of penalty points is shown. For all other years, the score of the gold medal match is shown. The following abbreviations are used: Dec = Decision, Ret = Opponent Retired, WO = Walkover. Weight limits have changed a number of times through the years. The limits shown are those used at the 2004 Olympics for divisions in which competition was held in 2004. History
Although heavyweight wrestling at the 1896 Olympics was billed as Greco-Roman, it was actually what is now considered freestyle wrestling, since leg holds were allowed. True Greco-Roman wrestling, in which holds below the waist are prohibited, was introduced to the Olympic games in 1906. From 1938 through 1980, medals were based on round robin competition. The wrestler with the fewest penalty points in the final round won the gold medal. Aquatics 1896 Aquatics had included a lot of weird events like underwater swimming (1900), 200m obstacle swimming (1900) and a plunge for distance (1904). there were a 100m pool was used, the ocean (1896, the River Seine (1900), and a small lake in St. Louis, USA (1904), had been used in Olympic sites. Decisions or goals were clear: the rules for swimming, diving, and water polo were to be standard; to keep the world records listed.
Archery 1900 Yes, archers today honor the fabled outlaw Robin Hood. The word "Robin Hood" now means splitting the shaft of an arrow alreadin in the target with another arrow. A Standard bow is coated in fibreglass, the arrows are made out of aluminium and carbon graphite and can go more than 240 km/h. Archers today compete in trying to get their arrow closest to the center of the target. Athletics 1896 Athletics have an Olympic motto, "Citius, Altius, Forius", which means faster, higher, stronger. Athletics (or track and field) is about jumping higher, throwing farther, and running faster than the other players. The ancient Olympics started with foot races. Today, athetics stays one of the most popular Olympic sports. From the 100m dash to the 42.195km marathon, from the hammer throw to the high jump. Badminton 1992 Badminton is like tennis because players stand across a net from each other and hit something across the net with rackets. In badminton the net is lowered, and they use a shuttlecock instead of a tennis ball, and it is never to hit the ground, or the other team gets a point.

Hulk Hogan's Heroes

Why pro wrestlers should be in the Olympics.
By Dave McKenna
Posted Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, at 3:29 PM PT
Hulk never got to go for the gold The Olympics sure have grown up since Jim Thorpe forfeited a medal for having played bush league baseball for pay. By now, the amateur fa§ade has, as Ric "Nature Boy" Flair would say, been dropped like third-period French. The United States has generally taken advantage of the move toward an all-pro Olympics. When the just-for-the-love-of-the-sport boys stopped bringing home gold in, for example, hockey and basketball, America called in the professionals. It's about time we did the same in wrestling. Why not? Nobody save the Iron Sheik would deny that we have the best wrestlers in the world. Yet in Athens, for still another Olympiad, America's professionals were kept off the mat while our amateurs foundered. Domestic wrestling fans pinned their medal hopes on Rulon Gardner, the beloved hayseed champ of Greco-Roman grappling. Gardner decisioned Iran's Sajad Barzi to win a bronze. A bronze medal? Only an amateur would be satisfied with that finish—there's no third-place belt in pro wrestling.

WeNews correspondent With the introduction of women's wrestling in the Olympicsthe only new sport to be added to this summer's gamesthere is hope among women and wrestling coaches that the sport will receive more attention at both the high school and college level. (WOMENSENEWS)Beginning today, about 60 young female wrestlers from across the country will compete in the Olympic trials in Indianapolis. For wrestlers vying for one of the four slots on the U.S. Olympic women's wrestling team, the chance to compete in Athens this August has been a long time coming. "I expected it to be in the 2000 games," says Tina George, a 25-year-old wrestler from Cleveland. "I was surprised that it wasn't, but I knew it would happen one day." At 5 feet, 121 pounds, George has competed in six women's World Championships, winning two silver medals. A Specialist in the U.S. Army and a member of the Army's World Class Athlete Program, she is currently training for the Olympic trials in Los Angeles. "I think that I like the sport because I'm kind of power hungry," she says with a laugh. "The nature of wrestling is forcing your will upon someone else. As young girls we're not taught to be aggressive. I like that fact that we can be physical and aggressive and still be women."

You are doing the world a huge service by raising the awareness of professional poker. Much like Kramer pleading for Darren's help so someday he can "get that chicken," someday poker will take its rightful place in the pantheon of Olympic sports. From there, we will get more coverage of sports where Americans are really proficient cigar smoking, scotch guzzling, and applying for a second mortgage. Keep up the good work. ADVERTISEMENT

Sports Diplomacy in Iraq One year ago, ECA launched a series of sports initiatives in partnership with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) to help Iraq reenter the international sports community.
Iraqi Athletes Participate in 2004 Olympics and 2004 Arab Games
The latest sports exchange, June 17-July 7, brought seven Iraqi athletes and coaches to participate in the Titan Games in Atlanta, Georgia, and to train at the U.S. Olympic training center in Colorado Springs, Colorado for the 2004 Olympics in Athens and the 2004 Arab Games in Algeria. The IOC suspended Iraq from Olympic competition in May 2003 because of human rights abuses by then-director of Iraq's Olympic movement, Uday Hussein. After the coalition-liberated Iraq, they started from scratch and held over 500 democratic elections for sports federations and clubs. On January 29, 2004 in Suleymaniyah, Iraq a new Olympic Committee was elected. Ahmed Al Samarrai was elected President of the National Olympic Committee of Iraq. Iraq now has 41 recognized sports federations and 214 clubs.
