Heavyweight wrestler Rulon Gardner took the first step towards defending his gold medal and completing a remarkable comeback on Tuesday. Gardner beat Marek Mikulski of Poland 3-0 for his third win of the day in the Greco-Roman 120 kg category to advance to the semfinal. (AP Photo/Hasan Sarbakhshian) At the Sydney Games, Gardner pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Olympic history when he defeated Russian legend Alexander Karelin 1-0 to win the 130 kg gold medal. Karelin had not lost a match in over a decade. Just competing in Athens is a victory for Gardner.

The Olympic Games:
Summer 2004 in Athens, Greece

Athens, Greece, will host the 2004 Summer Olympics. For information on Greece, click here . For a page on Greece's flag, click here The Games of the XXVIII Olympiad are being held in Athens, Greece. The opening ceremonies are on August 13, 2004. The closing ceremonies are on Sunday, August 29, 2004. The Ancient Olympics The ancient Greeks dedicated the Olympic Games to the god Zeus. The original games were held on the plain of Olympia in Peloponnesos, Greece. The Greeks held the first Olympic games in the year 776 BC (over 2700 years ago), and had only one event, a sprint (a short run that was called the "stade"). The race was run by men who competed in the nude. A wreath of olive branches was placed on the winner's head (in Greek, this is called a kotinos). The olive tree was the sacred tree of Athens, Greece. Women were neither allowed to compete in the games nor to watch them, because the games were dedicated to Zeus and were therefore meant for men.

The NCAA Olympic Sports Liaison Committee is recommending legislation that would further assist prospective student-athletes and enrolled student-athletes who participate in "elite" organized events. At its October 24-26 meeting in Colorado Springs, Colorado, committee members decided to pursue a legislative change that would prevent participation in elite events such as the Olympics, Pan Am Games or the World Championships from triggering the use of a season of competition and the requirement of serving an academic year in residence for prospective student-athletes and enrolled student-athlete in tennis, and swimming and diving. Currently, there are no exceptions for participation in elite athletics events, and athletes could potentially be required to use a season of competition as well as sit for an academic year. Committee Chair Kyle Kallander, commissioner of the Big South Conference, said the group was attempting to address situations that have arisen as a result of new NCAA legislation regarding eligibility and seasons of competition.

Sport of the Month: Wrestling The sport of Wrestling offers spectators great excitement due to its rare techniques, the quick changes in the score, as well as the strength, the combative spirit and the amazing physical attributes of the wrestlers. Based on historic evidence, Wrestling as a sport can be found in many civilizations. In ancient Greece, Wrestling was one of the most popular sports, conducted by athletes in the nude. In modern history, Greek athletes have won many distinctions in this specific sport, which continues to be included among the most popular sports in Greece. Description
Wrestling has two styles: greco-roman and free style.
In the greco-roman style, holds are allowed from the waist up, while in free style holds are allowed on the whole body. Matches in both styles consist of two, three-minute parts, with a 30 second interval. ATHENS 2004 Wrestling

Wrestling
is a sport in which one contestant competes with another using various holds and techniques in an attempt to force the shoulders of the opponent against a mat, thus scoring a fall and winning the match. If a wrestler cannot score a fall within the time limit, a winner is determined based on a point-scoring system. All wrestling matches are supervised by officials, who impartially enforce the rules of the sport. Two basic styles of amateur wrestling are generally employed around the world: freestyle and Greco-Roman. Other forms of wrestling are common within different cultures. Amateur wrestling is highly popular in the United States in colleges and universities, secondary schools, and athletic clubs. In addition to national championship matches, thousands of regional and local tournaments are held each year. Exhibition wrestling is also popular in the United States, although this professional type of wrestling is viewed as an entertainment spectacle rather than a sport. Olympic Wrestling The basic rules and scoring procedures for freestyle and Greco-Roman are the same, as determined by the Fédération Internationale de la Lutte Amateur (FILA), the international wrestling federation. Olympic-style wrestling bouts consist of a one-period, 5-minute match. A match is completed if a wrestler scores a fall, or if at the end of regulation, one wrestler has scored more points. Under current rules, if neither wrestler scores at least three points in the five minutes allotted, the wrestlers must go into an overtime period of a maximum of three minutes. If neither wrestler has scored three points at the end of the overtime, or if the bout is still tied, the officials determine the winner. The points awarded for the various scoring maneuvers in wrestling (takedown, reversal, escape, exposure) are the same in both freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling.

INDIA IN OLYMPIC 2004 Athens: Double trap shooter Rajyavardhan Rathore is world No. 3, long jumper Anju George and tennis player Mahesh Bhupathi No. 5 and shooter Anjali Bhagwat No.6... Now, if only rankings could assure medals. In the past few weeks, these three and other Indian medal hopes have converged on sports pages of the ToI presenting a picture of optimism. But to even open the door to the pantheon of Olympic greats — Indian and international — they will have to slug it out in a gloriously competitive arena. Unlike previous years there is one consolation. Each of the 75 Indians in Athens has earned the right to be there.
Yes, there are a few lucky ones, like sailing wild card entrants Malav Shroff and Sumeet Patel, or others who got in because others pulled-out. As usual, there is expectation of a few medals. Indian Olympic Association president Suresh Kalmadi feels: “a few are on the cards’’.
The great Milkha Singh, not one to mince words, has a contrasting view. Somewhere in between lies the truth.
And that is independent India has produced only three individual bronze medals — K D Jadhav in Helsinki 1952, Leander Paes in Atlanta 1996 and Karnam Malleswari in Sydney 2000 —apart from the golden era of hockey in the 50s and 60s. Hockey, which has made news for off-field skirmishes, has been on the wane and after 1980, when we won our last gold in a depleted field in Moscow, a fifth place at Los Angeles has been the best showing.
