Non-revenue? Olympic sports are priceless at colleges
By Myles Brand
August 15, 2004 "The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph, but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered, but to have fought well."
There is clear irony for many of the American athletes who will be participating in the Olympic Games in Athens. Almost on a weekly basis, we read or hear of programs being eliminated on our college campuses, victims of budgets that need to be balanced. Referred to as "Olympic" or "non-revenue" sports, these are programs that are often the first to go when difficult budget decisions must be made on campus. The Olympics present an important opportunity to underscore the vital role that American colleges and universities play in providing the facilities, training, coaching, competition and values so necessary to the development of highly skilled athletes in these sports. Indeed, in the past, on average approximately four of every five U.S. Olympic team members have been involved in intercollegiate athletes, in particular at NCAA institutions. The same ratio exists for those who are summoned from our college campuses to serve as Olympic coaches.

Athens Olympic Wrestling
Wrestling at the Athens Olympics will take place between 22nd - 28th of August at the Ano Liossia Olympic Hall Can Rulon Gardner do it again, without having to beat Russian super wrestler Alexander Karelin? Gardner has had a series of mishaps and calamities since pulling off his "miracle on the mat" upset of Karelin in Sydney, but now looks to be healthy and a gold medal contender again. Otherwise, U.S. freestyle and Greco-Roman teams don't look especially strong, but Americans could get a medal count boost from a talented four-member women's team. Armen Nazarien (132 pounds, 60 kg) of Bulgaria tries for a third gold and Russian star Bouvaisa Saitiev (163 pounds, 74 kg) looks to rebound from an upset in Sydney to American gold medalist Brandon Slay; it was Saitiev's only loss in major international competition since 1995.

But this year, women are allowed to wrestle in the Olympic Games for the first time. Stephanie GroŸ from œckerath near Cologne, Brigitte Wagner from Hallbergmoos and Anita Sch¤tzle from Mainz-Laubenheim will be representing Germany on the mat in Athens – and they have "good medal prospects" reckons Helmuth Pauli, the president of the German Wrestling Federation (Deutscher Ringerbund DRB). Helmuth Pauli has spent years fending off the prophecies of doom from people who say that wrestling is not a sport for women. Over the past years, international women’s wrestling successes have not been given a great deal of publicity, and according to Pauli, there is not as much internal support from the regional associations as he feels there should be. Normally the regional associations have to make sure that talented club wrestlers are promoted via the associations right to the top, to fight at German Wrestling Federation level. "But some regional associations have neither a women’s representative nor a women’s trainer", laments Pauli. He knows that the Olympic Games in Athens offer a major opportunity for his campaign to popularise women’s wrestling. However, this is dependent on the success of the three German women wrestlers. In this instance, success means a gold, silver or bronze medal.
