SLAY SLAIN Germany’s Alexander Leipold won his country’s first freestyle wrestling Olympic gold for 40 years amid bad blood and accusations. The 31-year-old outpointed Brandon Slay of the United States to win his first Olympic medal in his fourth Games. Leipold was rarely in any danger in the under76 kg final and steadily stacked up the points as his opponent struggled to make any impression. The German won 4-0 and performed a cart-wheel followed by a back-flip to celebrate his win. "This is my greatest victory," he said. "This is a hard weight category with many champions." The German picked up a huge black eye for his troubles, but it did not bother him. "I don’t want to win a beauty pageant. I wanted the gold medal and that’s why I’m here," he said. Slay took the defeat badly, refusing to shake either his opponent’s or the referee’s hand at the end. He said later: "This is the worst I’ve ever felt in my life after a loss. I don’t believe it was fair. I wasn’t treated fairly by the officials. I went out there and gave it my all but the match was out of my hands." Slay also accused the German of“whingeing like a crying baby”, adding: "He just kept acting to the officials to get the points."

WRESTLING REPORT Monday, September 25 The man-mountain of the mat
John Goodbody From John Goodbody in Sydney In Atlanta, the Americans called him the “bouncer in the meanest bar in hell”. Here, the Australians came to gawk today at perhaps the most extraordinary figure in a Games full of extraordinary figures. Wrestler Aleksandr Karelin ambled on to the mat with a record that might even make Steve Redgrave raise an eyebrow. The Russian was bidding for his fourth successive Olympic super-heavyweight Greco-Roman title in a career that has seen him unbeaten for 13 years. At 6ft 4in tall and 20 stone, Karelin is so physically robust that when the lift broke down at his block of flats in Novosibirsk in Siberia, he carried a large fridge unaided up eight flights of stairs to his home. Karelin has a width of shoulders and depth of chest that would make Arnold Schwarzenegger wince. He is completely shaven with ears like lanterns, a scar on the back of his head and hooded eyelids. When he looms over an opponent's body he is as frightening to spectators as Magwitch was to Pip when he appeared from behind the gravestone in Dickens’s Great Expectations We need legends in sport and few are more celebrated than Karelin. He may be virtually unknown in Britain. As I whispered to John Motson when he was commentating on the 1976 Olympic final and thought that he had got the two fighters the wrong way round, “I would not worry, John, there are only four Britons who know anything about Greco-Roman wrestling and three of them are out training.”

94. The Real Story Of The Ancient Olympic Games
The ancient olympic Games were primarily a part of a religious festival in 490480 BC, depicting two men wrestling. Above them hang a discus in its bag

THE GAMES
The ancient Olympic Games were primarily a part of a religious festival in honor of Zeus, the father of the Greek gods and goddesses. The festival and the games were held in Olympia (see 'Did you know' in the glossary), a rural sanctuary site (model shown here, courtesy of the British Museum) in the western Peloponnesos.
The Greeks that came to the Sanctuary of Zeus at Olympia shared the same religious beliefs and spoke the same language. The athletes were all male citizens of the city-states from every corner of the Greek world, coming from as far away as Iberia (Spain) in the west and the Black Sea (Turkey) in the east.
The sanctuary was named in antiquity after Mt. Olympos (see 'Did you know' in the glossary), the highest mountain in mainland Greece. In Greek mythology, Mt. Olympos was the home of the greatest of the Greek gods and goddesses.
The ancient Olympic Games began in the year 776 BC , when Koroibos, a cook from the nearby city of Elis, won the stadion race, a foot race 600 feet long. The stadion track at Olympia is shown here. According to some literary traditions, this was the only athletic event of the games for the first 13 Olympic festivals or until 724 BC. From 776 BC, the Games were held in Olympia every four years for almost 12 centuries.

Greco-Roman is the original style Wrestling is the world's oldest sport with evidence suggesting bare-handed combat was contested more than 5,000 years ago in Egypt.
The Olympic concept was conceived in 708 BC and the first record of wrestling being part of the sporting celebration came in 776 BC. In those days bouts were brutal, far-removed from the modern sport, and it was the influence of the Romans who helped reduce the violence before wrestling fell into obscurity until the Middle Ages. It reappeared on the scene in Britain, France and Japan and has gone from strength to strength ever since. Wrestling was included in the first modern Olympics in 1896 where it was a focus of the Games as organisers looked to create a bridge to the past. However, they were in for a surprise as instead of a hulking great monolith of a man taking the top medal, Carl Schumann, a diminuitive German gymnast took gold.

Irini Merleni became the first female wrestling champion in Olympic history by edging out Japan's Chiharu Icho in a thrilling 48kg freestyle final.
There was better news for Icho's sister Kaori, who saw off American Sara McMann in the 63kg-class final. And Japan's Saori Yoshida beat Canadian Tonya Verbeek to take 55kg gold. China's Xu Wang won the last Olympic title of the day, fending off Gouzel Maniourova for 72kg gold after winning a controversial semi-final. Earlier, Xu had ousted Japan's five-time world champion Kyoko Hamaguchi, who eventually took bronze. Hamaguchi claimed her opponent was unfairly awarded two points for a move which she started, and although no protest was lodged, her father had to be restrained. "Animal" Hamaguchi, a former professional wrestler, tried to leap from the stands, shouting: "That's impossible - they've made a mistake."

The problems of distance, expense and the lack of Greco-Roman meant that no European wrestlers travelled to the USA, so the competition was in effect a re-run of the American Championships. The decisive year for Catch-as-catch-can in the drive to establish it as a world sport was1908; three major events took place that year in London, which confirmed the sport’s international status. The Alhambra Tournament which finished on February 1st, the Hengler’s Circus Tournament, which commenced in May 6 th and lasted eight weeks and a couple of weeks later the Olympic Games. As always happens in big tournaments there were some unexpected results, Peter Gotz (1887/1944) of Germany failed to make the weight at lightweight but placed second in the middleweights. Yamato Maida (1874/1944) from Hirosaki City in Japan, the best of the Japanese in Europe, and who was the man most responsible for the world wide spread of Judo was easily beaten by Henry Irslinger of Austria in the first round of the middleweight class. Despite his defeat he entered the heavyweight class and placed 2nd. This was the first legitimate international championship
