In 1923, the first intercollegiate wrestling team in UNI's history took to the mat. Although this green team only competed in one meet, a successful 16-8 victory over Cornell, they had started a winning tradition that has carried on throughout the years. The Panthers have recorded 580 victories since that first year, with only twelve losing seasons. Early wrestling match in West Gym

Olympic Origins Many cultures the world over and back through the centuries, have staged events celebrating sporting achievement, but the source of inspiration for the modern Olympics are the games, first held nearly three thousand years ago near Mount Olympus in ancient Greece. raditional gathering of local people who took part in country sports. Suitably impressed, de Coubertin floated the idea of a revival, this time on an international basis, of the ancient Olympics and within a few years the first modern games were held in Athens. The 1896 games involved 14 nations, 241 athletes and 43 events, numbers that have increased at every games since. The next two games, at Paris (1900) and St Louis (1904) were held alongside World Fairs and, it was felt, were swallowed by them. By 1908 in London, however, the Olympics had become its own justification. In 1908 teams were, for the first time, organised completely on national lines, a development that led to much criticism during the politically highly-charged inter-war years. Many thought de Coubertin and his crowd were pandering to base nationalism, an insight that perhaps bore bitter fruit at Berlin in 1936 when Adolf Hitler used the games to glorify the Nazi regime.

http://library.thinkquest.org/3369/wrestle/history.htm
History of Wrestling
Wrestling has been popular throughout recorded history. Origins of the sport can be traced back 15,000 years to cave drawings in France. Early Egyptian and Babylonian reliefs depict wrestlers using most of the holds known to the present-day sport. In ancient Greece, wrestling occupied a prominent place in legend and literature; wrestling competition, brutal in many aspects, was the supreme contest of the Olympic Games. The ancient Romans borrowed heavily from Greek wrestling, but eliminated much of its brutality. During the Middle Ages wrestling remained popular and enjoyed the patronage of many royal houses, including those of France, Japan, and England. Early American settlers brought a strong wrestling tradition with them from England. The colonists also found wrestling quite popular among the Native Americans. Amateur wrestling flourished throughout the early years of the nation, and served as a popular activity at country fairs, holiday celebrations, and in military exercises. Of the early American styles, only the catch-as-catch-can style survives, and it has evolved into the modern form of collegiate wrestling. The first organized national wrestling tournament was held in New York City in 1888, while the first wrestling competition in the modern Olympic Games was held in 1904 in Saint Louis, Missouri. FILA was founded in 1912 in Antwerp, Belgium. The first NCAA Wrestling Championships were also held in 1912 in Ames, Iowa. USA Wrestling became the national governing body of amateur wrestling in 1983, and conducts competitions for all age levels.

Have you watched the Olympics on TV or better yet been there to experience it live? Did you ever wondered why the Olympics started? I did! If you want to be on or go to the Olympics, I think you first need to know about it. Why did the games start? At the original Olympics what games did they play? Also what games do they play today? Now, get ready for the world of the Olympics.
Have you ever wondered how the Olympics started? In Olympia, Greece the Olympic Games were held every four years. First Olympic game was recorded in 776 BC; that was about 3,000 years ago. At that time this great festival took place to honor the Greek gods. Olympics were held during the great festival. My resources say Olympics were held to please the various gods. One God, in particular, the most important was called Zeus. The Olympics were called Olympiad in Greece.
Now we know where the games are held, but we dont know what games they played? In the first thirteen Olympic games, there was only one event and that was the sprint. The sprint event was about one hundred and eight meters in length. Then later Pentathlon was added and it had different events. There was discus, javelin, jumping, running, and wrestling. After a while, they added Equestrian events and that included chariot racing and riding. The Ancient Olympics did have lots of events. They had two major events Equestrian and Pentathlon events.

Military Athletes Have Proud Olympic History
By Samantha L. Quigley
American Force Press Service WASHINGTON, Aug. 13, 2004 As 21 servicemembers report to Athens to participate in the 2004 Summer Olympic Games, they carry on a proud tradition. While few records of the Army's participation in Olympic games exist from before 1948, there is a record of a 2nd Lt. George S. Patton participating in the modern pentathlon in the 1912 games. He placed fifth. Since 1948, more than 400 servicemembers have participated in summer and winter Olympic games. The Army can claim 102 total medals for its efforts. Since the Air Force's inception in 1947, that service's athletes have won 24 Olympic medals, according to Steve Brown, chief of Air Force Sports. The Navy boasts at least 30 medals in the Games from 1948. Marines have participated in at least 15 Olympics and have won 14 medals since 1948. The earliest records place the first Olympic games at Olympia, in Western Pelloponnese, in 776 B.C. It is believed, however, Olympic games had been held for several centuries before that.

History
Wrestling can be traced far back into antiquity. Wrestling was one of the sports in the programme of the first ancient Olympic Games in Greece in 776 B.C..
It also was part of the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, with the inclusion of a competition in the Greco-roman style without any weight category specifications. There followed a short period when this sport was excluded. However, in 1908 Greco-roman wrestling returned to the programme of the Olympic Games. Meanwhile, free style was incorporated to the Olympic Games in 1904. In September 2001 the International Olympic Committee took the following two decisions on Wrestling:
  • Reduction of the weight categories for men from 16 to 14, in both Greco-roman and free style.
  • The International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles (Federation International de Lutte Amateur - FILA) was founded in 1912.
