History of Wrestling Origin:
The first recorded Olympic wrestling match occurred in the Olympics in 708 BC. Wrestling was highly valued as a form of military exercise without weapons. There were two distinct versions of the game, differing according to the holds and the methods of deciding the victor.
Variations:
Orthia pale
Upright and Proper Wrestling
The object of this type of wrestling was simply to throw the opponent to the ground. Three falls constituted a loss for that opponent, and the winner was called the "triakter". The match continued without stops until one man emerged victorious.
Kato pale Ground Wrestling
Victory in this competition depended on one competitor acknowledging defeat. Defeat was indicated by raising one's right hand with the index finger pointed. Rules of the Game: Blows were not allowed.
Tripping was permitted.
No biting or gouging was allowed.
There was no weight distinction.
The wrestlers were anointed with olive oil then dusted with powder to make them easier to grasp. The competition took place in the "keroma", or beeswax, a muddy and sticky arena. Characteristics of a Good Wrestler: Since there was no weight provision in the Olympics, it is obvious that the sport required a strong and stout build. A special combination of agility, skill and craft were also necessary.

Tools History of Wrestling HISTORY Wrestling has been popular throughout recorded history. Origins of the sport can be traced back 15,000 years through depictions in cave drawings in France. Early Egyptian and Babylonian reliefs depict wrestlers using most of the holds known to the present-day sport. In ancient Greece, wrestling occupied a prominent place in legend and literature; wrestling competition, brutal in many aspects, was the supreme contest of the ancient Olympic Games. The ancient Romans borrowed heavily from Greek wrestling, but eliminated much of its brutality. During the Middle Ages (5th century to 15th century) wrestling remained popular in Europe and enjoyed the patronage of many monarchs. Royal houses in Japan also supported the sport. Early North American settlers brought a strong wrestling tradition from England to their new home. The colonists also found wrestling to be popular among Native Americans. Amateur wrestling flourished and was a popular activity at country fairs, holiday celebrations, and military exercises.

Home About Us What We Do Questions ... Contact Us the origins and roots of wrestling FACTS AND INFORMATION ABOUT the sport How it all began. The ancient Greek Olympic Games first put wrestling on the map. Wrestling made it's Olympic debut in the Games of 708 B.C. It was a much more violent, punishing sport in the early days, when it had closer ties to military training. Wrestling spread through the Roman world, as well as other early civilizations in India, Japan, China and throughout the Middle East. Wrestling all but died out with the Olympic Games in the Dark Ages, but it was natural that when organizers of the 1896 Olympics were searching for sports with roots in antiquity, they looked to wrestling. It was the showpiece event of those Olympics, much as the 100-metre final is in the modern Olympics. Modern Greco-Roman wrestling was first mad popular in France. At the same time, a less restrictive brand of wrestling made inroads in the Western world. Unlike Greco-Roman wrestlers, who tried to throw or otherwise force their opponents to the mat with holds around the upper body, freestyle wrestlers had more options. They could trip their opponents, grab and their legs and use their own legs in holds and take-downs. Fittingly, freestyle wrestling also became known as “catch as catch can” and proved to be popular entertainment in the 19th Century. And here’s where the history gets a little confusing. Despite being a revival of the Olympic tradition, it seems the wrestling showcased at the 1896 Games was closer to freestyle than classical Greco-Roman. The toast of the 1896 competition was Germany’s Carl Schumann in the heavyweight class – not so much for his wrestling victory, but for the fact that he was also a gold medalist in gymnastics.

A game for a God
Once upon a time the Olympics was an event that started in order to honour the mythical God Zeus, the father of Greek Gods. From the beginning the Olympics was a local competition but later on more and more Greek city states participated. 293 events were organized during almost twelve centuries.
The Olympic area was a combination of temples, halls and the stadium. The Temple of Zeus was one of the Seven Wonders of the World with a 40 feet high statue in gold and ivory of the god.
A game for freeborn Greek
In a beautiful valley, at the city of Olympia in the state of Elis, 320 km west of Athens, the first organised Olympic Games were held 776 BC. The games took place every four years and were open only for freeborn Greek men. Most of the athletes came in the beginning from wealthy families because they had to pay their own expenses.

Saunders' can claim place in Olympic history
Couple will coach 1st women's wrestling team
By Jim Powers Sports Editor The closest Tricia Saunders came to experiencing the Olympic Games was vicariously through her husband, Townsend, who was named to the 1992 and 1996 U.S. wrestling teams. Now she has an opportunity to participate in the Games for real, and with Townsend by her side. The Ahwatukee Foothills couple will coach the first U.S. women's wrestling team at the 2004 Summer Games in Athens, Greece, in August. "I am thrilled to be a coach," Tricia said. "There is no other position I would rather be in. There is nothing bittersweet about this." Back in 1992 and 1996 while watching Townsend earn a spot on the U.S. team and earn a silver medal in 1996 Tricia felt the sting of being ostracized because women's wrestling had not been included as an Olympic sport. She had done everything in her power to shed light on the sport, winning four women's world championships as one of America's most successful female wrestlers. Injuries clouded her final two years of competition, and now at age 30, she doesn't need to compete in the Olympics to fill the void left in the 1990s.

Sponsored by The Decathlon in Olympic History Table of Contents: The Jim Thorpe Story When King Gustav V of Sweden presented awards at the 1912 Olympic Games of Stockholm, he proclaimed to the decathlon winner, an American Indian named Jim Thorpe, as the world's top athlete. "You sir, are the world's greatest athlete." Incidentally, Jim is purported to have replied, "Thanks, King" to the Swedish monarch, a story, true or not, which itself has become part of the Thorpe saga. Ever since, the Olympic decathlon champion or world record holder has been dubbed "the World's Greatest Athlete." And rightly so, since the decathlon is the only objective test of all around athletic ability. Decathletes must contest ten separate events and have those performances tallied on a standard scoring table. The decathlon measures basic sporting ability like jumping, sprinting and throwing. Within the backdrop and rules of track and field, decathlon champions must exhibit, the 4 S's: speed, spring, strength and stamina. Since 1912 great decathlon champions like Bob Mathias, Rafer Johnson, Bruce Jenner and Daley Thompson and others have become household names. But they all owe much to the legend of Thorpe.

History 07 - Olympic Stars Turned Pro In the early 1920s, many Olympic champions and medal winners tried their hand at professional wrestling, bringing the amateur and the pro sports closer together once again. The promoters were interested in packing the arenas and making money, not in real wrestling contests. In a desperate attempt to bring back the crowds of the Gotch era, they introduced pre-arranged matches that would include fancy maneuvers that were impossible to do in real matches. From that point on, double crosses and working matches were common in pro wrestling. The new emphasis was on entertainment, not competitive matches. However, there would still continue to be shoots for several more decades (more on that later). Some top amateur wrestlers decided they wanted a crack at the money, too. Among the Olympians trying the pro sport were:
  • Dr. Fred Myers of Chicago won four national AAU titles and placed third in the 1920 Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium, at 176-plus pounds; Nat Pendleton was a native of Iowa who learned to wrestle from a Farmer Burns mail order course. He was unbeaten during his college career at Columbia University in New York, won four national AAU titles and captured a silver medal in the 1920 Olympics at 176-plus pounds; Robin Reed was a native of Portland, Oregon, who was one of the biggest amateur stars of all time. He never lost an amateur match any time, any place. He won four weight divisions at the Northwest Olympic Trials of 1924 and then breezed to a gold medal at 134 pounds at the Paris Olympics. He also won three national AAU titles;

The ancient Greek city-states were rarely as united as they were at the Olympic Games.
By David C. Young
This article has been adapted from A Brief History of the Olympic Games,
Olympia was the site of the ancient Olympic Games, held every four years from about 776 B.C. until about 400 A.D. In those twelve centuries the political landscape inevitably underwent many changes, but Olympic events continued to attract athletes and spectators from Greek city-states and colonies throughout the Mediterranean.
Map: Patricia J. Wynne B.C. , maybe 300 men from the Greek city-states and colonies competed in about fourteen events. In antiquity, perhaps as many as 40,000 spectators could watch the games. Today, because of modern electronic communication, the whole world watches. For the poet Pindar of Thebes, whose victory odes immortalized the greatest contenders of the Hellenic world between 498 and 446 B.C. , the athletic contest served as a microcosm of the human struggle to surpass ordinary achievements. In athletic games the victor wins the glory his heart desires

History
Wrestling can be traced far back into antiquity. Wrestling was one of the sports in the programme of the first ancient Olympic Games in Greece in 776 B.C..
It also was part of the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, with the inclusion of a competition in the Greco-roman style without any weight category specifications. There followed a short period when this sport was excluded. However, in 1908 Greco-roman wrestling returned to the programme of the Olympic Games. Meanwhile, free style was incorporated to the Olympic Games in 1904. In September 2001 the International Olympic Committee took the following two decisions on Wrestling:
  • Reduction of the weight categories for men from 16 to 14, in both Greco-roman and free style.
  • The International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles (Federation International de Lutte Amateur - FILA) was founded in 1912.
