History
Although heavyweight wrestling at the 1896 Olympics was billed as Greco-Roman, it was actually what is now considered freestyle wrestling, since leg holds were allowed. True Greco-Roman wrestling, in which holds below the waist are prohibited, was introduced to the Olympic games in 1906. From 1938 through 1980, medals were based on round robin competition. The wrestler with the fewest penalty points in the final round won the gold medal. If two or more wrestlers had the same number of penalty points in the in the final round, standings were based on the number of penalty points in previous rounds. For those years, the number of penalty points is shown. For all other years, the score of the gold medal match is shown. The following abbreviations are used: Dec = Decision, Ret = Opponent Retired, WO = Walkover. Weight limits have changed a number of times through the years. The limits shown are those used at the 2004 Olympics for divisions in which competition was held in 2004. For other divisions, the weight limit is shown for the most recent Olympics at which the even took place.

History
Women's wrestling was added to the Olympic program in 2004, with just four weight divisions, although there are six international recognized weight classes. Women compete only in freestyle wrestling, not Greco-Roman. In 2004, 16 wrestlers qualified in each weight division. They were randomly divided into four pools, with round-robin competition determining the winner of each pool. The pool winners then advanced to the semi-finals. The Olympic Games:
Summer 2004 in Athens, Greece

Athens, Greece, will host the 2004 Summer Olympics. For information on Greece, click here . For a page on Greece's flag, click here The Games of the XXVIII Olympiad are being held in Athens, Greece. The opening ceremonies are on August 13, 2004. The closing ceremonies are on Sunday, August 29, 2004. The Ancient Olympics The ancient Greeks dedicated the Olympic Games to the god Zeus. The original games were held on the plain of Olympia in Peloponnesos, Greece. The Greeks held the first Olympic games in the year 776 BC (over 2700 years ago), and had only one event, a sprint (a short run that was called the "stade"). The race was run by men who competed in the nude. A wreath of olive branches was placed on the winner's head (in Greek, this is called a kotinos). The olive tree was the sacred tree of Athens, Greece. Women were neither allowed to compete in the games nor to watch them, because the games were dedicated to Zeus and were therefore meant for men.

History of Wrestling : Olympic Greats
Aug 29, 2004 History of Wrestling. Wrestling is a fast growing sport in Australia. Many Australians know more about the modern Professional Wrestlemania, with all its theatre, public adoration, rich remuneration, and publicity stunts. However, the true sport of wrestling is rooted in antiquity, and is quite different and exciting. Archaeological finds depict wrestling in Egypt and Mesopotamia more than 5,000 years ago. Documentary evidence puts the sport in India and China well before the Christian era. In fact, virtually every society around the globe sports a long tradition of some form of wrestling. And the ancient Greeks were among the most fanatic of fans. The Greeks depicted wrestling on coins, pottery, and statuary. Most of the colonnade of the palaestra at Olympia still stands today, testimony to the site of the wrestling competition in the ancient Olympic Games. The complex included a roofed area for matches and side rooms for the competitors to wash, bathe, and oil down for their matches. Wrestling also figures prominently in classical Greek legend, myth, and epic.

A Brief Overview of Olympic History
The Olympic Games is the largest sporting event in the world. It is constantly growing and changing to fit the needs of a changing society (meaning the entire world). Each celebration brings more nations and more athletes to the Games. In the beginning there were only a few hundred athletes, today there are over 10,000 athletes. In the first few Olympic Games there were very few women athletes because they were not welcome, today almost half the athletes are women.
The Modern Olympic Games started in 1896 in Athens, Greece and the 100th anniversary, the Centennial Games, were in 1996 in Atlanta, Georgia. The last summer Olympic Games were held in 2000 in Sydney, Australia. The next summer Olympic Games will be in Athens, Greece in 2004.
The 2002 Olympic Winter Games were celebrated in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. The Winter Olympic Games only started in 1924 and are not considered part of the OLYMPIAD, the four year time period between the Games. This special recognition is only for the summer Games, which are more important and have higher participation numbers in both number of countries and athletes.
The Modern Olympic Games are not hosted by a country, but they are hosted by a city. The recent Olympic Games were not the "American" Olympic Games, they were the "SALT LAKE CITY" Olympic Games.

In the valley at Olympia in Elis, a short distance from the western coast of Greece, the first recorded Olympic Games were held. But, it is suspected that the games started 500 years earlier. So important were these contests that time was measured by the four-year interval between the Games; the term "Olympiad" describing this period. The Olympic Games were originally restricted to freeborn Greeks. The competitors, including those who came from the Greek colonies, were amateur in the sense that the only prize was a wreath or garland. In ancient times, four great games festivals were held in Greece: The Isthmians, The Nemeans, The Pythians and The Olympic Games. The Olympic Games in
honor of Olympian Zeus was by far the greatest event. Greek games were celebrated in the belief that the spirits of the departed were grateful observing such spectacles, as they did during their earthly life.
