Cindy Gilbert-Bevilacqua was a three-time archery All-America and a member of the first JMU team in any sport to win a national championship. She placed third in the U.S. Intercollegiate Championships in 1982, when the JMU team won the national title, and again was third in 1983. She placed sixth in the U.S. intercollegiate tournament in 1984 and was named to the U.S. National Team that year. She finished second in the U.S. Indoor Championships in 1984 and third in 1983. Women's Wrestling Reaches Olympics Run Date: 05/21/04 By Dakota Smith
WeNews correspondent With the introduction of women's wrestling in the Olympicsthe only new sport to be added to this summer's gamesthere is hope among women and wrestling coaches that the sport will receive more attention at both the high school and college level. (WOMENSENEWS)Beginning today, about 60 young female wrestlers from across the country will compete in the Olympic trials in Indianapolis. For wrestlers vying for one of the four slots on the U.S. Olympic women's wrestling team, the chance to compete in Athens this August has been a long time coming. "I expected it to be in the 2000 games," says Tina George, a 25-year-old wrestler from Cleveland. "I was surprised that it wasn't, but I knew it would happen one day." At 5 feet, 121 pounds, George has competed in six women's World Championships, winning two silver medals. A Specialist in the U.S. Army and a member of the Army's World Class Athlete Program, she is currently training for the Olympic trials in Los Angeles. "I think that I like the sport because I'm kind of power hungry," she says with a laugh. "The nature of wrestling is forcing your will upon someone else. As young girls we're not taught to be aggressive. I like that fact that we can be physical and aggressive and still be women."

Photography In The Squared Circle: Covering WWF Wrestling
By Tom Buchanan, World Wrestling Federation
"...We'll come up on six then three in ...5...4...3...2, ready six, take six. Pyro. Send him. Tom, Derk, duck on the right side. Take three, ready two, take two. Four, spin around and get the announcers. Take four. Ready two, take two. Tom, there is a yellow sign blocking two can you get it? Ready seven, SEND HIM, SEND HIM, take seven. Four get Kane. Ready four, take four. Ready three, take three. Ready two, take two....."
Every Monday night millions of folks are sitting comfortably at home watching the World Wrestling Federation production of RAW on the USA network. For fans it is an exciting program filled with action and compelling stories revolving around their favorite performers. For me, it is two hours of non-stop action photography in a city far from home, with the constant soundtrack of a television director, executive producer, producers, and associate producers blasting in my left ear, and crowd noise in my right ear.
As I stand at ringside shooting the action, I am plugged into a RF headset with the non-stop chatter of television production. While searching for the coolest action photos I am constantly thinking about what is on the air right now, and what each of the seven video cameras will be shooting in the next ten seconds. It is unusual for a still photographer work so closely with television, but that relationship defines my roll as the staff photographer for the World Wrestling Federation.

69. Philosophy 02 - Objectives Of Wrestling - Real Pro Wrestling
Last article we saw how wrestling is the sport of war. We think it has asurface attraction to hook even the general sports fan.
http://www.realprowrestling.com/news/details/content/244C2B01-EDCA-6BCC-0FE03A40
Philosophy 02 - Objectives of Wrestling Last article we saw how wrestling is the sport of war. Building upon this foundation, this article we will look at the objectives of warfare, and see how they match up with wrestling.
In these articles we are not concerned why wars are fought or whether they are right or wrong. Since wrestling is sport and is designed so people normally do not get injured, we are free from the moral issues and the debate wars provoke. In this series, we are attempting to look at wrestling and warfare soley as an objective science.
It is easy to see how boxing, kicking, and other martial arts match up with warfare. But what about wrestling? Most people, including most wrestlers and coaches, have not jumped this mental gulf in understanding and therefore cannot take advantage of the thousands of years of experience the science of warfare can provide.
The answer is found in the advanced doctrine of maneuver warfare, the official warfighting doctrine of the armed forces of the US, NATO, and most successful armies in history. To summarized this complex and superior form of fighting, it is about maneuvering into position to maximize the power of an attack and to maneuver out of positions that put one at risk.
Continuing with the above situation, the best way to apply maneuver warfare is to get behind an opponent. Once you are behind an opponent, and especially when you have taken him down to the ground, one is in a superior position to cause damage from relative safety.

About the Chronology
The purpose of this chronology is to introduce the history and development of the world's martial arts and combative sports. Rather than a completed proprietary work, it is very much a work-in-progress and reader input is solicited. The Internet was deemed an appropriate venue for publication because the medium is easily accessed, quickly updated, and widely available. The chronological format was selected because it provided a convenient way for storing what were otherwise unrelated factoids.

http://www.teenink.com/Past/9899/March/Sports/wrestling.html
The Truth About Wrestling
by Douglas S., Williamsville, NY
P eople think many things about wrestling. Many judge this sport as easy with no purpose other than to beat on their opponent or as a brutal contest between two Neanderthals fighting it out. Most think that the stronger wrestler always wins. This is offensive and has no or very little value to it. People have this concept with no knowledge of the sport, or see wrestling on television and think it is the same in school wrestling.
Wrestling may indeed look like two people rolling around on a rubber mat but these people are really athletes, trying to win the best way possible. As for being brutal, in reality it is a sport with moves and countermoves. There are all sort of rules for moves that can hurt your opponent. True, there are moves to cause pain, but these are not permanent. When learning to wrestle, you learn set moves to take the opponent down and pin him. It is more like a science with leverage and the person's center of gravity. You will never go anywhere without learning the moves. If you just plan to go out and fight, you will be on your back in no time. Being stronger does not mean you will win the match; it all comes back to knowing your moves.
You know a person has never wrestled before or seen it in depth if they say that wrestling is an easy sport. Any wrestler I know will disprove that by how they practice. The moves you must learn to compete do not just come to you. You cannot see the move done, do it and be an expert. You must drill the move and then you will start to know it. You also cannot just know one move; you need to know moves from different positions and these need to be drilled and practiced. You also need to know the countermove so your opponent will not score on you.
