W ith Hurricane Andrew bearing down on her Miami home in 1992, Kay Brigham scurried to protect her most precious possessions from the fury of the approaching storm. Among the few items she could possibly carry with her were those letters she had long treasured but never dared to read, the ones entrusted to her for posteritythe love letters of a father she hardly ever knew. Kay had always been reluctant to read them, knowing she would grieve more deeply to learn the character of a man she had already lost as a child during World War II. At age seven, she only vaguely knew her Navy Commander father when his destroyer went down near a faraway placed called Salerno. The hurricane underscored how precious those letters were, yet she still dared not read and revisit her mother's anguish. Then, in 1995, inspired by the 50th Anniversary of the victory in Europe, Kay mustered the courage to open the seal. Though she encountered anticipated sadness, Kay uncovered a story of love and heroism so uplifting that it had to be shared with her family and the broader American family. The letters Kay has compiled here are a virtual time capsule, capturing the human experience of a naval officer and his devoted wife, from their courtship during the Great Depression through the personal aftermath of that fateful day in October, 1943 when the U.S.S.

It was reported that her husband, from the age of six until the age of nine, was confined in a concentration camp in the Dutch East Indies during World War II by the Japanese army, together with his mother and sister; his father was thrown into a male camp, his elder brother was forced to labor for the railway construction in Burma. The trauma of these years has remained until today; he had to undergo brain surgery, and has had psychotherapy for more than ten years. Not only he himself has suffered a great deal, the lady says, but also his distress has had, and still has, a great impact upon his family. Similar tragedies have often been reported in China, Korea and other countries in South-East Asia, where Japanese militarism invaded during the war. Whenever I hear such stories, I feel great pain in my heart as a member of the nation that once initiated that horrible war; I sincerely apologize to the lady mentioned above and her husband and to all the people who had to go through such excruciating experiences during the past war. The main reason the Dutch lady raised the question is that she had read Brian Victoria's book Zen at War and felt herself betrayed by the war-time words and deeds of the founder of the Sanbo-kyodan Haku'un Yasutani Roshi, who repeatedly praised and promoted the war. Since she herself practices Zen contemplation under Father Johannes Kopp, a Zen teacher of the Sanbo-kyodan, it had never occurred to her that the Zen masters, whom she deeply respected, would ever glorify the waging of war.

Finnish Emigration and Immigration after World War II Introduction A crucial period in the development of Finnish society has been the rapid industrialisation and urbanisation since World War II. While paying the war debt to the Soviet Union Finland was obliged to expand its industrial sector enormously. Economic growth was considered the fastest in Scandinavia. This, however, brought with it great societal changes. Internal migration, and emigration to an even greater extent, caused many social, cultural and economic problems. In Central Europe people have only recently achieved comprehensive rights to freedom of movement. In the Nordic countries - Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden - a common labour market, a passport union and the agreement on non-discrimination and far-reaching social rights for people migrating from one Nordic country to another have been in place for four decades. Since the establishment of the Common Nordic Labour Market in 1954, more than one million Nordic citizens have availed themselves of the opportunity to move freely in the Nordic region. A noteworthy feature of most of the inter-Nordic movements has been a high proportion of migrants returning to their country of origin. Moreover, since the early 1980s, the migratory flows between the Nordic countries have been comparatively small and have tended to balance out. Likewise, the migratory movements between the Nordic countries and other Western European countries have been rather small.
