Long Range Desert Group Leslie was the third son of Murdoch and Anna McIver. Born at Mohaka, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand 22nd February 1914. At the outbreak of World War II Leslie was a taxi driver in Wairoa and on the 9th. June 1940 he signed up for the army. On the 3rd. October he entered the New Zealand Army and on the 19th. December he embarked for Egypt, eventually arriving on the 30th. January 1941. Leslie served with the Long Range Desert Group and was a member of "T" Patrol. Between 18/11//41 and 13/12/41 he became a Prisoner of War; Believed to be the 23rd. November; Aug '42, Known to be in Campo PG 85 - Sept '42; Campo PG 65 - Jan '43; and Campo PG 57 - Nov '43. Stalag VIIIa. He must have escaped from Stalag VIIIa when the Russian advance could be heard. He was obviously in the company of Dvr. J. Powell, Pte Atkinson (Both in the Royal Army Service Corps.), and F.C. Alley, a New Zealander, who all gave accounts of what happened to Leslie. Their reports tell us the following: In the dark hours before dawn on 9/2/45 Leslie was badly wounded in the right thigh during the fighting between the Russians and Germans at Rudkenwaldau.

The Blue Funnel Line is no more, so: Farewell to the China Boats Blue Funnel Line ships were known as the China Boats or the Welsh Navy in Merseyside/North Wales. I don't think that any of the thousands of us who plied the world's trade routes in the conventional cargo liners of the British Merchant Navy in the forties, fifties and sixties ever dreamed that within a generation our way of life would cease to exist as the trade moved into containerships. As a memorial to the last days of the break bulk cargo ships I offer a few pictures of them and life aboard them, mostly taken in the sixties in what were, to me, the early days of 35mm colour slide photography. The pictures are sized to fit an 800 x 600 screen. I was in the Blue Funnel Line and most of the pictures reflect that. The Glen Line and Shire ships were part of the fleet. During World War 2 the liner trades were suspended and ships of the Merchant Navy went where they were directed by the Ministry of War Transport. On one such voyage the Blue Funnel ship Rhexenor, carrying an innocuous cargo of cocoa from West Africa to Canada, was torpedoed and sunk. Nothing sufficiently dramatic to attract the attention of the media of the day, just a run of the mill, routine sinking. Nevertheless, I believe that the reports on their three weeks in open lifeboats, written at the time by some of the officers, are worthy of preservation so I include them here.

Haden HONOLULU, Hawai‘i (March/April 2000 – Pacific Magazine)—During World War II, many islands in the Pacific became household names as the Japanese surged through the region, with the Americans in hot pursuit. Newsreels in movie houses around the world screened footage of battles and hoisting of victory flags on islands such as Tarawa, Guadalcanal, New Guinea, Iwo Jima, Peleliu, Kwajalein, Saipan and Guam. The islands received their notoriety mainly due to the high number of casualties that were part of the price of those victories. However, many other islands also were greatly affected by the war and suffered many hardships even though they received scant mention in the news. Nauru is one such island that went through the pain and isolation of war that inflicted a heavy toll on the indigenous population and devastation to the land itself. It may come as a surprise to many that Nauru lays claim to being one of the few places in the world that was attacked by both the Germans and Japanese during the war. German raiders, disguised as Japanese merchant ships, operated out the Caroline and Marshall Islands before the war between Japan and the United States began.
