World War II: The Impact at Home
The quick fall of France to the German army in 1940 shook the strong pacifist sentiment of the American public. Suddenly, Great Britain alone stood between Nazi Germany and the United States. Once the United States was fully committed to the war in December of 1941, patriotism soared in American society. Americans' willingness to carry out blackout and civil defense drills; to recycle metals, paper, and even cooking fats; to work longer hours, but to have fewer consumer goods to buy with their salaries demonstrated the nation's strong support for the war . There were political changes as well, as the country began to shift to the right. This lecture examines the domestic side of World War II and the changes that took place in American society during the war. Some questions to keep in mind:
  • How did American involvement in WWII affect the political attitudes of liberals? Conservatives? How did the nation's participation in WWII impact the American economy in the short term? What about lasting economic impacts of the war?

World War II in the Curriculum. ERIC Digest.
In 1991, the fiftieth anniversary of the United States' entrance into World War II was observed. This is an opportune time to reevaluate and renew the teaching of this cataclysmic event. Most people have been affected by the political, economic, and social consequences of the war. But perhaps the most important reason to rededicate ourselves to teaching about World War II is that the experience is still near enough in time to provide retrospective interest for those who lived through it and to spark intellectual curiosity among those unborn at the time.
WHY EMPHASIZE WORLD WAR II IN U.S. AND WORLD HISTORY COURSES
There are many debates about what to teach in the social studies curriculum. However, there is a consensus on the need to emphasize World War II, as it is a major turning point in world history. World War II involved the largest armed forces, the longest battle lines, and the most destructive weapons of any war. It inflicted more suffering, more destruction, and more deaths. Good history teaching emphasizes global turning points - those events that have had the most far-reaching consequences, for the largest number of people, across the broadest areas of the Earth. Knowledge of World War II and other global turning points in history advances one's understanding of how our contemporary society developed. This knowledge, of course, is the necessary foundation for effective thought and action by our students about the important political events and public issues of their lives.

eHistory > World War II Search Members Articles Battles ... Timelines World War II, one the darkest periods in the history of the world, raged from 1939 to 1945 and involved almost the entire world. Countries were destroyed, created or changed forever. Fifty million people lost their lives between 1939 and 1945 and hundreds of millions more suffered injuries and wounds. Yet many today do not know when, where, or by whom the war was fought or that their fathers and grandfathers fought battles from the volcanic islands of the South Pacific Ocean to the icy waters of the North Atlantic; or from the jungles of Burma to the deserts of North Africa; or from the grassy steppes of Russia to the skies over Britain. We offer this overview of World War II in the hope that some may gain a better understanding and become interested in continuing to learn more. There is a lot to know about history's most widespread and destructive war, but there is no better place to start than eHistory's World War II area. Coastal Fortification on the Gulf of Mexico
Until the late 1940's, coastal fortification was a primary line of defense for the United States. Several distinct generations of coastal fortification exist, each a unique insight into a period of U.S. history.
Along the shores of the Gulf of Mexico, coastal fortifications of four generations, the Third System (1817-1867), the Endicott period (1890-1910), the post World War I period (1918-1936), and the World War II era (1937-1945) can be found. Over the last couple of years, I have had the opportunity to visit several sites which have examples of these periods of fortification.
In the following pages, I have included pictures of the fortifications from several sites. They are divided by location, and further subdivided by era when possible.
Any suggestions or corrections to these pages are greatly appreciated. I can be contacted at my email address, listed at the bottom of the page.

Japanese Attack on Dutch Harbor! June 3, 1942
June 3, 1942, six months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Japanese aircraft struck U.S. Army and Navy installations at Dutch Harbor in the Aleutian Island Chain. Two days of aerial bombardment left over one hundred civilians and servicemen dead and wounded; barracks, fuel tanks, and other structures set afire. U.S. forces at Fort Mears met the first attack on June 3, with antiaircraft and small arms fire, but on June 4, the Aleutian Tigers (eight P-40s), engaged the Japanese planes in aerial dogfights. The U.S. planes were launched from Cape Field at Fort Glenn, a secret airbase on neighboring Umnak Island. The Japanese had thought the nearest airfield was on Kodiak, and Cape Field, disguised as a cannery complex, had remained undetected. The surprise aerial counter-attack destroyed four Val dive bombers and one Zero.
In the following days, U.S. amphibious and bomber aircraft searched the Pacific Ocean for the Japanese carriers and their escort ships, with Zeros. Low visibility weather exacted a heavy toll on the search planes. Of six Catalinas that came within sight of the Japanese fleet, four were downed by Japanese fighters, another was lost in the fog.

World War II (1941-1945) "Sometimes I think maybe it's a good thing their mothers can't see them when they die" Mary Ferrell
Nurses, of course, are among these veterans. Serving on b attlefronts from North Africa to Italy to Normandy to Corregidor and Bataan, the nurses of World War II contributed much to the care of the wounded, the morale of the fighting men, and the development of nursing as a profession. In all, approximately 57,000 nurses served in the Army Nurse Corps and 16,000 in the Navy Nurse Corps by V-J Day. 4,644 nurses were stationed along the European front in 1944; 4000 were serving on the Pacific front in 1945. By the war's end, 201 American military nurses had died, 16 from enemy fire. "I can paint no pretty picture of life in the Army...in the loneliness and confusion of a chaotic world, one finds much hard work and sacrifice and little peace...(However) our individual integrity and sense of responsibility is the essence of success and survival of democracy" (Tomblin, 1996, p. 8). For nurses arriving at the 25th Station Hospital in Liberia, their first Army assignment proved to be something of a shock to the system. The nurses found themselves sharing their thatched-roof communal bathroom with lizards, snakes, monkeys, and rats so large that they sounded like a "herd of animals" as they scampered through camp. Nurses reporting for duty in Papua, New Guinea, found accomodations more suitable but were plagued with insects, scorpions, and the diseases they carried. One New Guinea nurse was bitten on the bottom by a scorpion as she used the latrine and nearly died from the resulting fever. On the European front, nurses arriving for service in France shortly after the D-Day operations received baptism by fire. Between July 3-18, 1944, the 91st Evac. Hospital cared for 2, 549 patients under constant enemy artillery fire.
