Dare and Endure:
World War II
This is no time for ease and comfort. It is the time to dare and endure.
- Winston Churchill
William Davis Rhodes
Veteran of D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge Updated April, 2003 A few years ago, I uncovered a small treasure. It was a document that I had longed to find. And when I finally found it, held it in my hands, it was as if a key had turned within a lock. It was my grandfather's Honorable Discharge. William D. Rhodes, born on 17 December 1917, was 25 when he joined up. Three years later, he was much older. He had seen the bloody Normandy beach code-named Omaha. He had stared into the mists of a snowy forest named Ardennes, a frozen hell where over a million men fought the largest land battle of the war. He had mysteriously "acquired" a motorcycle and cruised the frozen lanes of Belgium, meeting up with a Belgian lass known only as Collette. He had seen a Nazi death camp. And, somewhere along the way, someone had handed him a Silver Star. He was a member of the 3rd Armored Division, the Spearhead that drove into the heart of Nazi Germany. The unstoppable 3rd was the first allied unit to enter Germany, the first to capture a German town (Roetgen), and the first to breach the infamous Siegfried Line. And, when the bloody end finally came, it was the last unit of the First Army's VII Corps to cease firing.

The history, science and engineering of cryptanalysis in World War II created by Tony Sale Between 1939 and 1945, the most advanced and creative forms of mathematical and technological knowledge were combined to master German communications. British cryptanalysts, Alan Turing at the forefront, changed the course of the Second World War and created the foundation for the modern computer. In 1991 the Bletchley Park, the wartime home of Allied code breaking, was saved from destruction by Tony Sale and some colleagues. They transformed it into a museum devoted to the recognition and reconstruction of this crucial aspect of world history, which had remained completely secret until the early 1970s.

Brief History of World War Two Advertising Campaigns Even before the United States officially entered what would become the bloodiest war of all time, it had already undertaken the largest, broadest, and most ambitious advertising campaign ever. Charged with the task of selling wartime government programs and war bonds to the American public, the War Advertising Council and the War Finance Committee sought to promote voluntary compliance with bond buying quotas and rationing programs while at the same time contributing to the home-front morale. The work of these organizations produced "the greatest volume of advertising and publicity ever given to any product or agency" in the history of America. Six major campaigns in support of the war effort are outlined below. A Timeline of advertising and military campaigns is also available.

World War II and the fog of history
August 5, 2005 ANNIVERSARIES always bring forth memories, some of them dark and conflicting, and this 60th year since the end of World War II demonstrates that there is no agreed-upon narrative of the 20th century's epic conflagration. We have seen China's violent demonstrations against Japan's teaching of its war history. Even though Japan has apologized many times for its war crimes, it cannot resist whitewashing its World War II past. Japan's historical view of those tortured times may never fit with China's. Southeast Asians suffered horribly under the Japanese occupation, but many willingly joined the Japanese because they opposed their British, French, and Dutch colonial masters more. Indians are still unsure of whom to commemorate the heroic soldiers of the British Indian Army who fought and died opposing a Japanese invasion or the Indian National Army, made up mostly of Indian soldiers recruited in Japanese prison camps, who fought alongside the Japanese against their own countrymen because they believed the British were the real enemy. The French in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia entered into an uneasy alliance with the Japanese after the fall of France at the direction of the collaborationist Vichy government. And Thailand decided it was better not to resist the Japanese at all. A clever Thai ambassador in Washington refused to deliver a Japanese-directed declaration of war, thereby allowing the Americans at war's end to treat the Thais as victims rather than as one of the Axis powers.
