In the First World War, Japan joined the Allied powers, but played only a minor role in fighting German colonial forces in East Asia. At the following Paris Peace Conference of 1919, Japan's proposal of amending a "racial equality clause" to the covenant of the League of Nations was rejected by the United States, Britain and Australia. Arrogance and racial discrimination towards the Japanese had plagued Japanese-Western relations since the forced opening of the country in the 1800s, and were again a major factor for the deterioration of relations in the decades preceeding World War 2. In 1924, for example, the US Congress passed the Exclusion Act that prohibited further immigration from Japan.

Visas For Life: The Remarkable Story of Chiune and Yukiko Sugihara
World War II tested the courage of many diplomats in positions to save innocent people from slaughter. Only a few measured up. There was Aristedes de Sousa Mendes. He sacrificed his career as Portuguese Consul General in Bordeaux, France, when he saved thousands of people fleeing the Nazis. There was Raoul Wallenberg, Swedish Diplomat in Budapest, Hungry. After saving thousands of Hungarian Jews he mysteriously disappeared into Russia. And there was Japanese Deputy Consul General Chuine Sugihara and his wife, Yukiko. Answering their consciences, these Portuguese, Swedish, and Japanese diplomats rescued more than 150,000 Jews and other refugees from the Holocaust. The following photographs and text are a sampling of the exhibit Visas For Life The Remarkable Story of Chiune and Yukiko Sugihara , first shown at the Simon Wiesenthal Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles in 1995.The exhibit was produced by Mr. Eric Saul of San Francisco. Visa For Life is the story of a Japanese diplomat and his wife who, when confronted with evil, obeyed their hearts and conscience in defiance of an indifferent government. In the summer of 1940, the Sugihara family risked their careers and futures to save the lives of more than 6,000 Jews fleeing Hitler's killing machine.

asco Bay played a significant role in World War II from the beginning of the war to the end. Because of its proximity to the fighting in Europe, it was an important naval base, heavily defended by the Army. Almost all local industries produced for the war, but a new shipbuilding industry made a major contribution. And as in all other wars, local men, women and children contributed both at home and abroad. On Sept. 1, 1939, the Portland Press Herald announced that Germany had invaded Poland, signalling the beginning of the second World War. The impact was soon felt here in Casco Bay when in October, the Fifth Infantry Regiment shipped out from its home base of Portland to beef up the defenses of the vital Panama Canal.
Click on the map to see a larger version After the Fifth left, a new anti-aircraft regiment, the 68th Coast Artillery, was organized in Portland. A year later, in September 1940, the 1,600 men of the 240th Coast Artillery Regiment of the National Guard were called to active duty to man the defense forts of Portland harbor. Additional barracks were constructed to house draftees who received basic training in Portland. The next spring, March 1941, the remainder of the National Guard - the 103rd Infantry and 52nd Field Artillery - and the Naval Reserve were called up and sent away for training.

North American Aviation employees put the finishing touches on a B-25 bomber at the Inglewood, CA plant, October 1942. As the "Arsenal of Democracy" the United States provided war material to all the World War II Allies opposing the Axis, a critical factor in winning the war.
    World War II History
World War II was the largest war in history involving most of the population of the world in one way or another. The major conflict went on from the German invasion of Poland on 1 September 1939 through the surrender of the Japanese on 2 September 1945, but the war was actually in progress for years before 1939. There will never be one source with a full history of WW II since there are millions of stories to be told and many ways to tell those stories. In this section of Olive-Drab the major dimensions of the conflict will be be outlined and links provided to many more sources. The narrative is written from the perespective of the Allied forces, the United States in particular, although with recognition that much can be learned from other views as well. This History of World War II section of Olive-Drab will be growing and changing as more material is prepared and linked into the site.

THE HISTORY OF POLAND: THE SECOND WORLD WAR
    Invasion:
On September 1st., 1939, 1.8 million German troops invaded Poland on three fronts; East Prussia in the north, Germany in the west and Slovakia in the south. They had 2600 tanks against the Polish 180, and over 2000 aircraft against the Polish 420. Their "Blitzkrieg" tactics, coupled with their bombing of defenceless towns and refugees, had never been seen before and, at first, caught the Poles off-guard. By September 14th. Warsaw was surrounded. At this stage the poles reacted, holding off the Germans at Kutno and regrouping behind the Wisla (Vistula) and Bzura rivers. Although Britain and France declared war on September 3rd. the Poles received no help - yet it had been agreed that the Poles should fight a defensive campaign for only 2 weeks during which time the Allies could get their forces together and attack from the west. On September 17th. Soviet forces invaded from the east. Warsaw surrendered 2 weeks later, the garrison on the Hel peninsula surrendered on October 2nd., and the Polesie Defence group, after fighting on two fronts against both German and Soviet forces, surrendered on October 5th. The Poles had held on for twice as long as had been expected and had done more damage to the Germans than the combined British and French forces were to do in 1940. The Germans lost 50,000 men, 697 planes and 993 tanks and armoured cars. Thousands of soldiers and civilians managed to escape to France and Britain whilst many more went "underground" . A government-in-exile was formed with Wladyslaw Raczkiewicz as President and General Wladyslaw Sikorski as Prime Minister.

    79. European Royalty During World War II
A site by Glenn A. Steinberg that captures the personalities, circumstances, and genealogies of the royal houses of Europe during a particular moment in their history.
    http://gsteinbe.intrasun.tcnj.edu/royalty/royalty.html
European Royalty during World War II by Glenn A. Steinberg One may draw from the study of history the lesson that the age of princes is over. . . . For two hundred years we have been watching the decomposition of this system. The princely houses have retained nothing but their pretensions. With these they traffic, and by these they live. . . . If one day we had time to waste, it would be a curious study, that of these princely families, to see how they maintained themselves in power, despite their internal struggles. Their wars always had the most exalted motives. In reality, it was always a question of odd patches of land, whose possession was bitterly disputed. How much Europe has had to suffer, for eight hundred years, from these practices and, especially and above all, Germany! – Adolf Hitler Judging from personal experience I believe the revolution of November 9, 1918, was . . . a revolution of hunger, caused by the desperate desire of the people for peace at any price. . . . The great majority of the people had no particular grudge against the German dynasties. If they had, they would not have restored to their former ruling houses so large a portion of their properties after a nationwide plebiscite. . . . If federalization is to be a constructive element in the future development of Europe and not merely a disguised method for keeping Germany as disunited as possible, the historical development of the country should not be overlooked and sacrificed to arbitrary measures conceived as a result of momentary emergencies and tendencies.
