Immigration Conflicts
With freedom and opportunity in their dreams, millions have flocked to American shores since the birth of the immigrant-built republic. In predictable cycles, anti-immigrant sentiment waxes and wanes, driven by a complex formula of ethnicity, prejudice and economics. In Texas in the 1840s the newcomers were German and, in our latest additions to TheHistoryNet, we recall the intense conflicts that resulted decades later. ~Roger L. Vance, TheHistoryNet Editor-in-Chief

A Bibliography
Navajo Code Talker Dictionary
Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Peleliu, Iwo Jima: the Navajo code talkers took part in every assault the U.S. Marines conducted in the Pacific from 1942 to 1945. They served in all six Marine divisions, Marine Raider battalions and Marine parachute units, transmitting messages by telephone and radio in their native language a code that the Japanese never broke.
The idea to use Navajo for secure communications came from Philip Johnston, the son of a missionary to the Navajos and one of the few non-Navajos who spoke their language fluently. Johnston, reared on the Navajo reservation, was a World War I veteran who knew of the military's search for a code that would withstand all attempts to decipher it. He also knew that Native American languagesnotably Choctawhad been used in World War I to encode messages.
Johnston believed Navajo answered the military requirement for an undecipherable code because Navajo is an unwritten language of extreme complexity. Its syntax and tonal qualities, not to mention dialects, make it unintelligible to anyone without extensive exposure and training. It has no alphabet or symbols, and is spoken only on the Navajo lands of the American Southwest. One estimate indicates that less than 30 non-Navajos, none of them Japanese, could understand the language at the outbreak of World War II.

Seabee History: Formation of the Seabees and World War II
After the 7 December 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the United States entry into the war, the use of civilian labor in war zones became impractical. Under international law civilians were not permitted to resist enemy military attack. Resistance meant summary execution as guerrillas.
The need for a militarized Naval Construction Force to build advance bases in the war zone was self-evident. Therefore, Rear Admiral Ben Moreell determined to activate, organize, and man Navy construction units. On 28 December 1941, he requested specific authority to carry out this decision, and on 5 January 1942, he gained authority from the Bureau of Navigation to recruit men from the construction trades for assignment to a Naval Construction Regiment composed of three Naval Construction Battalions. This is the actual beginning of the renowned Seabees, who obtained their designation from the initial letters of C onstruction B attalion. Admiral Moreell personally furnished them with their official motto:

World War II in Ukraine The Ukrainian Experience in World War II
With a Brief Survey of Ukraine's
Population Loss of 10 Million by
    Andrew Gregorovich
The monument over the grave of the great Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko in Kaniv,
Ukraine, surrounded by the barbed wire of a German concentration camp in World War II. Published in Commemoration of
the 50th Anniversary of V-E Day
and in memory of the ten million.
This article is intended to provide some of the basic information about the Ukrainian experience in World War II. Ukraine's role in the war is basically unknown in the world. For example, one American encyclopedia of World War II does not even include an entry on Ukraine. For almost a half century Soviet and Ukrainian archives were closed to historians but today it is possible to do scholarly research in Ukraine and Moscow. This may finally provide a more accurate picture than has been possible with existing sources. Every Ukrainian family suffered losses in the war and many had victims of both Hitler and Stalin. Perhaps it is significant that out of three of my relatives who were victims of the war, two were shot by Stalin's USSR and one was shot by Hitler's Gestapo. Ukraine has thousands of World War II monuments. Very small villages often have a monument listing the names of the World War II dead. Ukrainian losses probably numbered 10 million or half of the entire USSR total and twenty per cent of the entire World War II total of fifty million dead.

World War II
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
World War II was a truly global conflict with many facets: immense human suffering , fierce indoctrinations, and the use of new, extremely devastating weapons like the atom bomb World War II , also known as the Second World War , was a mid-20th-century conflict that engulfed much of the globe and is generally considered the most costly and intense war in human history The conflict began by most Western accounts on September 1 and lasted until , involving many of the world's countries. Virtually all countries that participated in World War I were involved in World War II. Many consider World War II to be the only true world war due to the overwhelming number of nations involved and the extraordinary number of theatres—from Europe and the Soviet Union to North Africa, China, South East Asia and the Pacific. In World War I non-European theatres had seen quick and short colonial battles, but in World War II these theatres demanded far more resources and human sacrifice. Attributed in varying degrees to the Treaty of Versailles , the Great Depression , and the rise in Nationalism Fascism National Socialism Japanese imperialism , and Militarism , the causes of the war are a matter of debate. Similarly, the exact date at which the war commenced differs between historians, with the most common date given as the German
