Welcome to the Oral History Project: A Culture and Heritage Exchange Initiative
This project brings history to life as students become historians of war, culture and heritage experiences. This intergenerational streaming media project, in partnership with the Library of Congress, is intended to preserve and honor the oral histories of Americans, bringing communities and schools together in an unparalleled civic pursuit - a project-based learning experience that is immeasurable in its scope. Powered by Multimedia Instructional Network Delivery System (MINDS), The Oral History Project: A Culture and Heritage Exchange Initiative serves as a repository of oral histories (in streaming video format) and artifacts from some of the most historically significant populations of the United States: our veterans, those men and women who have served our country in times of need, the culturally rich indigenous populations of Native American Nations, and African American people who are an integral part of American culture and history. Their stories, experiences and ways of life are preserved here. We encourage all visitors to view the collection of oral history videos included as part of this site. To do so, please click on one of the buttons on the left hand side navigation. After filling out a brief registration form, you will have access to a wealth of streaming videos.

U.S. Troops in Action
Selected Battle Photos "...we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain... Remember Dec. 7th!" U.S. Armed Forces recruiting poster from 1942. Allied POWs with hands tied behind their backs pause during the Bataan Death March. About 76,000 prisoners including 12,000 Americans were forced on the 60 mile march under a blazing sun without food or water toward a new POW camp in the Philippines. April 1942. The Bataan Death March continues with Americans improvising litters to carry comrades who have collapsed along the road from a total lack of food and water. Over 5,000 Americans died on the march which began April 10 and lasted six days for some and up to twelve days for others. With only 450 feet of 'runway,' one of sixteen Army B-25 Mitchell bombers takes off from the deck of the USS HORNET on its way to take part in the Doolittle Raid, the f irst U.S. bombing raid on Japan. The all volunteer strike force, trained and led by Lt. Col. James Doolittle, flew 800 miles then bombed Tokyo and 3 other cities without opposition. The raid inflicted little damage but gave a big boost to Allied morale in the face of the seemingly unstoppable Japanese. April 18, 1942.

World War II Main Article WORLD WAR II, the name commonly given to the global conflict of 1939-1945. It was the greatest and most destructive war in history. Whereas military operations in World War I were conducted primarily on the European continent, World War II included gigantic struggles not only in Europe but in Asia, Africa, and the far-flung islands of the Pacific as well. More than 17 million members of the armed forces of the various belligerents perished during the conflict. Its conduct strained the economic capabilities of the major nations and left many countries on the edge of collapse. The events leading to World War II, its military operations, diplomacy, statistical data, and results, are discussed under the following headings: 1. The War in Brief
