164. THE UNITED STATES AND THE IRAN-IRAQ WAR
An analysis of the role of the United States in the war by Stephan R. Shalom. Z Magazine
http://www.zmag.org/zmag/articles/ShalomIranIraq.html
THE UNITED STATES AND THE IRAN-IRAQ WAR STEPHEN R. SHALOM The war began on September 22, 1980, when Iraqi troops launched a full-scale invasion of Iran. Prior to this date there had been subversion by each country inside the other and also major border clashes. Iraq hoped for a lightning victory against an internationally isolated neighbor in the throes of revolutionary upheaval. But despite Iraq's initial successes, the Iranians rallied and, using their much larger population, were able by mid-1982 to push the invaders out. In June 1982, the Iranians went over to the offensive, but Iraq, with a significant advantage in heavy weaponry, was able to prevent a decisive Iranian breakthrough. The guns finally fell silent on August 20, 1988. Primary responsibility for the eight long years of bloodletting must rest with the governments of the two countries the ruthless military regime of Saddam Hussein in Iraq and the ruthless clerical regime of the Ayatollah Khomeini in Iran. Khomeini was said by some to have a "martyr complex," though, as U.S. Secretary of State Cyrus Vance wryly observed, people with martyr complexes rarely live to be as old as Khomeini. Whatever his complexes, Khomeini had no qualms about sending his followers, including young boys, off to their deaths for his greater glory. This callous disregard for human life was no less characteristic of Saddam Hussein. And, for that matter, it was also no less characteristic of much of the world community, which not only couldn't be bothered by a few hundred thousand Third World corpses, but tried to profit from the conflict.

CIVIL WAR RECORDS IN THE FLORIDA STATE ARCHIVES Florida Confederate Pension Files Online
The Florida State Archives has digitized its collection of Confederate pension records with over 13,000 pensions available online.
Florida played an active, if less than prominent, role in the American Civil War. Once derisively called the "Smallest Tadpole in the Dirty Pool of Secession," Florida had joined the Union only fifteen years before its January, 1861 secession, and the state's population was the smallest by far of any in the Confederacy. Florida nonetheless provided an estimated 15,000 troops for Confederate service, as well as several thousand black and white Union volunteers. The state's coastline harbored blockade runners and Florida beef, pork, sugar, molasses, and salt helped feed the armies of the South. A number of military engagements occurred in the state, most importantly the February 20, 1864 battle of Olustee, which ended in a decisive Confederate victory. At the close of the war, Tallahassee was the last state capital east of the Mississippi River to remain in Confederate hands.
The Florida State Archives maintains a number of collections documenting Florida's role in the War Between the States, as well as some material from other states. Listed in this pamphlet are the most significant of these collections.

The mesmerizingly directed, shockingly violent opening fifteen minutes are easily its best, helped immeasurably by the gorgeous cinematography by Alar Kivilo (2001's "The Glass House"). Kivilo proves to be a master of beautiful, snow-drenched landscapes, and one shot of a character being thrown from an automobile, only to find himself lying in a sea of frozen bodies, is cogent and unforgettable. Since the meticulous visuals are about the only compliment worth paying to "Hart's War," it's best to get it out of the way from the start. Once the setting switches to a POW camp outside of Belgium, the movie grinds to a startling halt from which it never picks up or evokes any more signs of interest.

Siegfried Sassoon
"How to Die"
Dark clouds are smouldering into red
While down the craters morning burns.
The dying soldier shifts his head
To watch the glory that returns;
He lifts his fingers toward the skies
Where holy brightness breaks in flame;
Radiance reflected in his eyes,
And on his lips a whispered name. You'd think, to hear some people talk, That lads go West with sobs and curses, And sullen faces white as chalk, Hankering for wreaths and tombs and hearses. But they've been taught the way to do it Like Christian soldiers; not with haste

Some professors at the University of Tokyo in Japan want to use one or the other of
these photographs in a paper they are preparing. They need permission from the
photographers to use them. I believe the one on the left was taken by Tom Belivous, but
I can't find his e-mail address. I've lost track of who took the photo on the right. Both
photos have been featured on my Civil War index page in the past. Please contact me
if you can help identify the photographers of the two shots above. Thanks.
