Market Harborough An East Midlands Town in the First World War Women's Role in the War It has been disappointing that in all the time I have been researching the town in World War 1 I have found very little information about women at the time. It seems that little has survived in family collections and I have found few documents concerning them. Yet there must have been some girls from Market Harborough who became nurses or took other war-related jobs. Some girls surely must have taken the opportunity the war provided to escape the close confines of a little town and its close and rather rigid society. One family gave me a photograph of a nurse - her name was Carrie Martin - but they knew nothing about her. To judge by the inscription on the picture she might simply have been a nurse in a hospital where a man from the town was being treated, or she might have been a family friend. Who knows? I've reproduced the photograph here because it is a nice picture. Carrie Martin (Click to enlarge) In the columns of the local newspapers the only women who were regularly featured were those ladies who devoted time and effort to organising fund-raising events.
