From the United States Merchant Marines, a brief history of merchant seamen who contributed to America's effort for independence. With select biographies.
http://www.usmm.org/revolution.html
Privateers and Mariners in the Revolutionary War The 13 Colonies, having declared their Independence, had only 31 ships comprising the Continental Navy. To add to this, they issued Letters of Marque to privately owned, armed merchant ships and Commissions for privateers , which were outfitted as warships to prey on enemy merchant ships. Merchant seamen who manned these ships contributed to the very birth and founding of our Republic. Comparison of Navy vs. Privateers in Revolutionary War Continental Navy Privateers Total ships Total guns on ships Enemy ships captured Ships captured by enemy The Patriots of Maine Fight at Sea News of the April 1775 battles at Concord and Lexington reached Machias, Maine just as citizens were anxiously awaiting long-needed supplies from Boston. When the Unity and Polly carrying these supplies arrived, they were accompanied by the British armed schooner Margaretta , under the command of Lieutenant Moore . The escort's job was to see that in exchange for supplies, lumber was taken back to Boston to build barracks for British soldiers.

WELCOME to the official National Park Service Civil War Web Site. The approaching Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War (2011-2015) offers the current generation of Americans a most important opportunity to know, discuss, and commemorate this country's greatest national crisis, while at the same time exploring its enduring relevance in the 21st century. Featured Event
In some respects, the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War has already begun. The state of Kansas, for example, is commemorating the events which began with the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 and ended only with the establishment of the state in 1861. This period has been known as Bleeding Kansas. Read about the 150th anniversary commemorations at historic sites (HS) in Kansas.

Wing Commander 15 Year Anniversary
Chris from the Wing Commander CIC wrote in and told us about a news piece they have regarding the 15th anniversary of the release of the first Wing Commander title on September 26th, 1990, and how far the series has come since the release so long ago. Here's a clip: In the fifteen years since that day, the Wing Commander saga set the high bar for quality in computer and video gaming. If your favorite video game today goes out of its way to make you feel like a participant instead of an observer, it is because of what Wing Commander did to gaming. If your computer plays sounds on a Soundblaster, reads games from a CD-ROM drive or makes use of 3d accelerated graphics, it is because Wing Commander pushed the envelope and made these things the standard. You can read then entire retrospective over at Wing Commander CIC posted by Brian @ 2:18 AM 0 comments

Civil War Nurses
"The Angels of the Battlefield"
William Ludwell Sheppard's watercolor In the Hospital, 1861 (above) pays tribute to those women of the South who labored ceaselessly to care for the war's wounded. "I have never worked so hard in all my life and I would rather do that than anything else in the world," declared one weary attendant.
A devoted nurse later praised her female colleagues: "Would that I could do more than thank the dear friends who made my life for four years so happy and contented; who never made me feel by word or act, that my self-imposed occupation was otherwise than one which would ennoble any woman. If ever any aid was given through my own exertions, or any labor rendered effective by me for the good of the South-if any sick soldier ever benefitted by my happy face or pleasant smiles at his bedside, or death was ever soothed by gentle words of hope and tender care, such results were only owing to the cheering encouragement I received from them. They were gentlewomen in every sense of the word, and though they might not have remembered that "noblesse oblige," they felt and acted up to the motto in every act of their lives. My only wish was to live and die among them, growing each day better from contact with their gentle, kindly sympathies and heroic hearts. Approximately two thousand women, North and South, served as volunteer nurses in military

137. War Of 1812 - Battle Of North Point - Methodist Meeting House
This building was known as the Battle Ground MethodistEpiscopal Church, which was occupied by General Stricker the night preceding the Battle of North Point and was used as a hospital by both armies, during and after the battle which took place on September 12, 1814.
http://www.bcpl.net/~etowner/npstop7.html
Virtual Tour Stop #7 - Methodist Meeting House After the Battle of North Point, the British commander did not press his attack on the withdrawing Americans. This battle being complete, the injured were taken to a local Methodist church where surgeons worked through the night. An unusual point is that casualties from both armies were treated together in the same field 'hospital'. At that time, prisoners where held only until they could be exchanged for an equal number of enemy prisoners. General Stricker, therefore, did not abandon his injured, leaving them with the British. The British, who had decided to encamp for the night, were ill prepared. As a cold September rain began to fall, they did their best to keep themselves and their muskets dry, as they had left their coats and tents back at the landing site on North Point. General Stricker ,"After proper deliberation", chose to withdraw his battle weary troops once again, closer to the defenses of Baltimore. Today, only a few stones of the foundation of the Methodist Meeting House remain visible. The site of this impromptu field hospital is marked with a large stone monument.

139. The Fog Of War
Review and pictures.
http://www.haro-online.com/movies/fog_of_war.html
The Fog of War Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara It's been a great year, financially and critically for documentaries. Subjects ranged all over the place, with everything from a revolution in Venezuela migrating birds temporary art how a crime affected a family , and heck, even a spelling bee captivated audiences across the nation. Screaming out of the gates as the year finishes is The Fog of War , a remarkable documentary in a year of great ones. Rarely do people have the chance, or take the time to look over their past and talk about their mistakes. Rarer still does somebody like Robert McNamara does this on camera. The Fog of War is an extended confessional, in the form of a series of lessons that McNamara drew from his experiences. Helming this film is Errol Morris ( Mr. Death: The Rise and Fall of Fred A. Leuchter, Jr. ) and his infamous Interrotron. The Interrotron is Morris' ingenious device that makes it look like his subject is looking directly at a camera during an interview. Basically, it is a camera with mirrors, so Morris' image is where the lens is, so that his subject, in this case McNamara, will address the camera as if he is addressing Morris. It is simple and elegant, yet lends an impressive amount of weight and adds a personal touch to the proceedings. Morris can also be heard sometimes, prodding his McNamara to expand on his answers. Morris intersperses shots of McNamara in front of the Interrotron with tons of archival footage, and small but effective models. And there is a great score by Philip Glass (
