The Story Of World War 1 Aviation The history of World War One aviation is a rich and varied story. It was marked by a period of very rapid technological development, where aircraft evolved from their humble beginnings as slow moving, fragile, powered kites, into quick, agile, sturdy, fighter craft. The Great War consumed the world in a conflict that was unrivaled until that time. It was a kind of war far different than the one that was waged on the ground. The fight for control of the air was where the cunning, and bravery of the individual could matter for much. This website is my tribute to those fragile aircraft and to the brave pilots on both sides that flew them.
The Sopwith Triplane was used in combat by the Royal Naval Air Service. The stack of three wings reduced wingspan and increased wing area making it handle and climb better than biplanes.
The German Air Service began equipping fighter units with the rugged and reliable Pfalz D.III in August 1917. Together with the Albatros D.Va the D.III and the improved D.IIIa, helped revive Germany's air superiority over the Allies. Test Your Knowledge of

In the First World War, Japan joined the Allied powers, but played only a minor role in fighting German colonial forces in East Asia. At the following Paris Peace Conference of 1919, Japan's proposal of amending a "racial equality clause" to the covenant of the League of Nations was rejected by the United States, Britain and Australia. Arrogance and racial discrimination towards the Japanese had plagued Japanese-Western relations since the forced opening of the country in the 1800s, and were again a major factor for the deterioration of relations in the decades preceeding World War 2. In 1924, for example, the US Congress passed the Exclusion Act that prohibited further immigration from Japan.

After World War II had ended, Japan was devastated. All the large cities (with the exception of Kyoto ), the industries and the transportation networks were severely damaged. A severe shortage of food continued for several years. The occupation of Japan by the Allied Powers started in August 1945 and ended in April 1952. General MacArthur was its first Supreme Commander. The whole operation was mainly carried out by the United States. Japan basically lost all the territory acquired after 1894. In addition, the Kurile islands were occupied by the Soviet Union, and the Ryukyu Islands, including Okinawa , were controlled by the USA. Okinawa was returned to Japan in 1972, however a territorial dispute with Russia concerning the Kurile Islands has not been resolved yet.

THE HISTORY OF POLAND: THE SECOND WORLD WAR
    Invasion:
On September 1st., 1939, 1.8 million German troops invaded Poland on three fronts; East Prussia in the north, Germany in the west and Slovakia in the south. They had 2600 tanks against the Polish 180, and over 2000 aircraft against the Polish 420. Their "Blitzkrieg" tactics, coupled with their bombing of defenceless towns and refugees, had never been seen before and, at first, caught the Poles off-guard. By September 14th. Warsaw was surrounded. At this stage the poles reacted, holding off the Germans at Kutno and regrouping behind the Wisla (Vistula) and Bzura rivers. Although Britain and France declared war on September 3rd. the Poles received no help - yet it had been agreed that the Poles should fight a defensive campaign for only 2 weeks during which time the Allies could get their forces together and attack from the west. On September 17th. Soviet forces invaded from the east. Warsaw surrendered 2 weeks later, the garrison on the Hel peninsula surrendered on October 2nd., and the Polesie Defence group, after fighting on two fronts against both German and Soviet forces, surrendered on October 5th. The Poles had held on for twice as long as had been expected and had done more damage to the Germans than the combined British and French forces were to do in 1940. The Germans lost 50,000 men, 697 planes and 993 tanks and armoured cars. Thousands of soldiers and civilians managed to escape to France and Britain whilst many more went "underground" . A government-in-exile was formed with Wladyslaw Raczkiewicz as President and General Wladyslaw Sikorski as Prime Minister.

Art of the First World War
An exhibition of 110 paintings brought together by the major history museums of Europe depicting World War I as seen by 54 painters on both sides. Hitherto overshadowed by the literary and philosophical accomplishments that arose from the trauma of war, the artists and their work are brought into context in a detailed presentation by art historian and exhibition curator Philippe Dagen, via UNESCO and partner museums throughout Europe. Users can opt for a guided tour of the exhibits or browse through the exhibition thematically. Exhibits include William Roberts' 'The First German Gas Attack at Ypres' which gives a dramatic representation of the use of toxic gases by the German forces, Felix Vallotton's 'Le plateau de Bolante' depicting the war-swept landscape of the Artois region of France, and John Nash's 'Over the Top' illustrating the attack during which the First Artist Rifles left their trenches and pushed towards Marcoing near Cambrai.
