Selected Battle Photos "...we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain... Remember Dec. 7th!" U.S. Armed Forces recruiting poster from 1942. Allied POWs with hands tied behind their backs pause during the Bataan Death March. About 76,000 prisoners including 12,000 Americans were forced on the 60 mile march under a blazing sun without food or water toward a new POW camp in the Philippines. April 1942. The Bataan Death March continues with Americans improvising litters to carry comrades who have collapsed along the road from a total lack of food and water. Over 5,000 Americans died on the march which began April 10 and lasted six days for some and up to twelve days for others. With only 450 feet of 'runway,' one of sixteen Army B-25 Mitchell bombers takes off from the deck of the USS HORNET on its way to take part in the Doolittle Raid, the f irst U.S. bombing raid on Japan. The all volunteer strike force, trained and led by Lt. Col. James Doolittle, flew 800 miles then bombed Tokyo and 3 other cities without opposition. The raid inflicted little damage but gave a big boost to Allied morale in the face of the seemingly unstoppable Japanese. April 18, 1942.

Welcome to www.worldwar-2.net The modern world is still living with the consequences of World War 2
I hope you will enjoy viewing worldwar-2.net and find its information helpful interesting. It primarily contains an exhaustive day by day timeline, covering every event during World War 2, by military theatre and in chronological order from 1939 through to 1945 and gives a fascinating insight into the most devastating war in our history. Of course, I continue to make regular updates to the websites timelines etc with new information as I research it. The latest updates are to the Scandinavia 1940 timeline, which has been updated to include more information about the Russo-Finnish war. A new section called Casualties . This contains statistics about each country, including its pre-war population and ethnic make-up. Its not complete yet, so expect this section to expand over the coming months. Work continues on other projects which I shall update you about in due course.

Calendar About the Author A graduate of the New School for Social Research with a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing and from New York University with a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism and History, David H. Lippman is an award-winning journalist who has worked in newspapers, wire services, television, and radio. He began this series while serving as public affairs officer for US Naval Antarctic Support Unit in Christchurch, New Zealand, as Plan of the Week notes for his command. When contacted by the USS Washington Associate Unit , he offered to post the series on their web page. He has continued and expanded the series before and after his discharge from the Navy. He has focused on the USS Washington in this series because of the ship's brilliant combat record and its unique distinction as the only American dreadnought ever to engage and sink an enemy dreadnought. Mr. Lippman also writes articles on World War II history for magazines. One of his articles was recently published in an anthology alongside those of historians Caleb Carr, Stanley Weintraub, and William Manchester. He now works as a Public Information Officer for the City of Newark, New Jersey, where he lives with his family. Comments and criticism are welcome at his e-mail address.

World War One History
Introduction
There are huge amounts of available resources on World War One. Thousands of books and print resources have been published since the conflict, and now the World Wide Web also offers hundreds of sites about it. Finding quality resources, much less a starting point, can be very difficult. This pathfinder was created to help Internet users find reliable information about the First World War for either personal knowledge or formal research. Both print and Internet sources are covered. Please remember that these resources are excellent starting points, but that additional research from the bibliographies of these works is necessary to understand the full complexity of this historical event.
Print Sources
There is an enormous amount of printed material available concerning World War One. If your library uses the Library of Congress classification system, then you should look under the heading World War, 1914-1918

General Purpose
This document is intended to aide high school and college students in beginning research papers on World War II. Print and Internet resources are included. Users must keep in mind that the resources listed in this document are recommendations for starting points: the bibliographies of the works mentioned provide a wealth of related information and more in-depth research is necessary to create a balanced and well-researched paper.
Where to Start
There is a great deal of information about the origins, battles, and personal stories of World War II. It is important to begin a search for information by either looking around to find a topic which is interesting or narrowing down a topic already specified. It often helps to think up seach terms, or words that best describe what sort of information you are looking for before you search the Internet or your local library's catalogue. Some terms and topics of interest include:
  • World War II: World War Two, the Second World War, the Great Patriotic War, World War, 1939-1945.

World War 1 Naval Combat
World War 1 Naval Combat Battle of Heligoland Bight HMS Aboukir, Hogue and Cressy Loss of HMS Audacious Cruiser Squadron of Admiral Graf Spee ... Contact Me Welcome to World War 1 Naval Combat. This site is mainly about the history of surface warship warfare between the Imperial German Navy and the British Royal Navy (RN) during World War 1 and includes information on the Battle of Jutland, Battle of Dogger Bank, Battle of Heligoland Bight, Battle of Coronel and the Battle of the Falklands, the scuttling of the German fleet at Scapa Flow, losses of battleships, battlecruisers, cruisers and destroyers and the war exploits of the cruisers Emden, Karlsruhe and Königsberg. These navies receive the vast bulk of the content for two main reasons, firstly these two navies were the most powerful forces during World War one, and secondly I'm British (or should I say EUish?) and so the history of these navies are the most interesting to me. The maps on this site are very crude and should be taken as a rough indication of what went on. If there are any discrepancies between maps and text then the text will be the least inaccurate. My graphics skills are not great! The pictures are thumbnails so for a larger version of each picture just click on the thumbnail picture. There will be updates in the future, but when and about what I haven't decided yet. Should you have any comments, questions, corrections (especially spelling mistakes), polite suggestions or related information please feel free to contact me on the link at the bottom of the blue links on the left.
