Bush cheers bipartisan accord on budget, taxes
Bush discusses the budget agreement in a meeting Wednesday with congressional leaders. WASHINGTON (CNN) President Bush hailed a congressional conference committee's agreement on a budget framework Wednesday, saying the measure included "reasonable levels of spending" and put the public interest before partisanship. Congressional and White House negotiators agreed Wednesday morning to allow approximately a 5 percent increase in discretionary spending for the next year. That works out to about $667 billion. On Tuesday they agreed on a tax cut of $1.35 trillion over 11 years, including $100 billion this year. Bush met Wednesday afternoon with congressional leaders and a handful of Senate Democrats, whose support probably will be necessary to get the package through the upper chamber. Bush hailed the Democrats, saying they "realized it was time to come together to put a good budget together on behalf of the American people."

Europe's Net Sales Tax Takes Effect Companies outside the E.U. now must charge VAT on sales to Europe. Scarlet Pruitt, IDG News Service Tuesday, July 01, 2003 A directive requiring companies outside of the European Union to start paying value added tax on sales of electronically delivered goods and services to European customers came into effect Tuesday. Advertisement document.write(pcw_AdRender('iframe','showcase-lg',undefined)); Under the new rules, companies selling electronically-delivered goods such as computer software and music downloads as well as subscription-based or on-demand broadcasting will have to pay VAT in accordance with the country where the customer is located. The new rule will likely mean higher prices for consumers living in Europe . In Denmark, for example, which has one of the highest VAT rates in Europe, prices for products and services delivered electronically from non-E.U. countries could increase by as much as 25 percent. The new rule also means that companies based outside the European Union may have to restructure the way they conduct their billing and sales tracking in the region.

Bushes pay $268,719 in federal taxes
Cheneys report $945,051 in income
President Bush gestures to repeat a question from reporters as he stands next to first lady Laura Bush Friday. Story Tools WASHINGTON (CNN) President Bush and first lady Laura Bush earned $771,940 in taxable income this past year and paid $268,719 in federal income taxes, the White House said Friday. Both figures are up from 2001, when the first family reported $711,453 and paid $250,221 in federal taxes. This past year's earnings included the president's $400,000 annual salary and income from trusts, the White House said. The Bushes donated $82,700 to churches and charitable organizations, ranging from donations to September 11 charitable funds, and to the Tarrytown United Methodist Church in Austin, Texas, and Southern Methodist University, Mrs. Bush's alma mater. Vice President Dick Cheney and Lynne Cheney made $945,051 in 2002 and got a tax refund of $95,858. The Cheneys had paid $436,972 in taxes through withholding and estimated tax payments, when it turned out they owed $341,114, his office said. The income included the vice president's $190,134 salary. In addition, Cheney earned $162,392 as a result of deferred compensation from when he headed Halliburton Company. In December 1998, Cheney deferred his 1999 salary as Halliburton chief executive, electing instead for it to be paid over five years, his office said.

(CNN) With eight days to go before the Iowa caucuses, middle class tax cuts were at the center of debate Sunday among Democratic presidential hopefuls. Sens. John Kerry of Massachusetts and John Edwards of North Carolina looking to gain ground on former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean and Rep. Richard Gephardt of Missouri emphasized their plans to create tax cuts for middle income Americans. Dean, who leads in numerous polls of Iowa voters, said he'll balance the federal budget and enact changes, including payroll tax cuts, that will bring financial relief to middle class families in other ways. Gephardt, a close second, said guaranteeing health care for everyone will be his priority.

GOP responds to Clinton on taxes, education, health care
January 27, 2000
Web posted at: 11:16 p.m. EST (0416 GMT) WASHINGTON Saying their proposed tax cuts have been bigger, and their health care and education ideas better, congressional Republicans on Thursday countered President Bill Clinton's final State of the Union Address. First-term Senators Susan Collins of Maine and Bill Frist of Tennessee delivered the GOP response, sometimes citing personal experience for their disagreements with Clinton's proposals. In a text of the response released to the media early, Frist, a physician, indicated that health care would be among the first battleground issues in Congress.

Town Attorney’s information is flawed

Lee Chowaniec Resident Mike Fronczyk asked the Lancaster Town Board, “Why are the stub roads to the east of the Pleasant Meadows subdivision (Stony Brook) not being opened as they were on the west side of the site development? This would allow for interconnectivity with the Stony Brook subdivision, which in turn would enhance traffic movement and emergency response time?
