World Religions
The World Religions nourish the deepest and broadest values that shape culture, life, language, and identity. It's impossible to understand the news, or the direction of contemporary affairs, without some knowledge of these traditions. In the World Religions Program, we study all of the world's major religions from a non-sectarian point of view, and we engage in comparative analysis. The Program cultivates historical, social scientific, and philosophical reflection upon core religious values, both in areas where there is consensus and in areas where there is conflict. The curriculum focuses on the interaction of religions with their social contexts (e.g., politics, economy, and culture) and with each other (e.g., dialogue, conflict, and peace-making). Examples of offered courses include Comparative Religious Ethics; Internet Religion; Religion and Fiction; Religion, Conflict Analysis, and Mediation; and Religion, Peace, and War. The program is flexibly designed. In consultation with an advisor, students can prepare for a career in business or law, journalism or international politics, graduate school or seminary. Program graduates have been admitted to the most prestigious graduate schools in the country.

Institute For World Religions The Institute for World Religions is an educational and religious center dedicated to the study of the Asian and Western religious and cultural traditions. Located in the Berkeley Buddhist Monastery , the Institute benefits from proximity to an environment that is grounded in traditional Buddhism yet serves contemporary society. The Institute interprets essential aspects of Chinese culture and religions for dialogue with the other major religions of the world. Dedicated to creating a sanctuary where one can engage in conversation about theological principles, religious beliefs and spiritual practices, the Institute encourages the interfaith search for universal values in an atmosphere of cooperation and mutual respect. It aims to challenge the boundaries of our minds and avoid attachment to narrow sectarian differences.
History Of The Institute
In 1976 Cardinal Yu Bin graciously consented to be the Institute's first director. In 1994 the Institute for World Religions moved to the Berkeley Buddhist Monastery. Its proximity to the University of California at Berkeley and the Graduate Theological Union, and its location in the San Francisco Bay Area have added a new dimension to the Institute's potential for rich and mutually beneficial academic, religious and cultural interchange.
The Program
The Institute for World Religions offers a wide variety of programs designed to deepen self-cultivation, to enhance basic values, and to foster a genuine sense of mutual understanding among different traditions. The activities range from public lectures to public dialogue and practice sessions. Since its inception, the Institute for World Religions has sponsored an on-going forum for dialogue and programs that bring leaders of religion and spirituality into conversation with contemporary theorists of science and technology.

With just 20 questions, our goal is to provide a fun and informative activity to explore world religions and belief systems. WORLD RELIGIONS ON ABORTION HINDUISM Vasu Murti and Mary Krane Derr write in the Fall 1998 issue of the Journal of Feminism and Non-Violence Studies that "Hinduism teaches that abortion, like any other act of violence, thwarts a soul in its progress toward God. Hindu scriptures and tradition have from the earliest of times condemned the practice of abortion, except when the life of the mother is in danger. Hinduism teaches that the fetus is a living, conscious person needing and deserving protection. Hindu scriptures refer to abortion as

An Introduction to the Study of World Religions
From the earliest known evidence of human religion by Homo Sapiens Neanderthalensis around 100,000 years ago to the present day, religion continues to be a very influential aspect of human lives. Today, there are numerous challenges and problems faced by humans from every possible background, location and social class. Every day people must face issues of health, safety and mortality. It is because of these daily challenges that religion continues to exist. Religion is the universal tool for explaining things which we do not understand through the context the known physical world. Although there are countless religions, each different from the other, they all serve the same purpose. Each answers questions which all humans seem to be programmed to ask: Why are we here? What happens when I die? How shall I live my life? Religion helps us to transmit our values from one generation to another, and influences the way we interact with the natural environment. It teaches us how to see ourselves in light of the universe and gives purpose and meaning to life.
