Major World Religions An Introduction to the Study of World Religions There are 11 other long established, major world religions, each with over 3 million followers: Baha'i Faith Buddhism Christianity Confucianism ... Vodun (Voodoo) please click on religion name for some details From the earliest known evidence of human religion by Homo Sapiens Neanderthalensis around 100,000 years ago to the present day, religion continues to be a very influential aspect of human lives. Today, there are numerous challenges and problems faced by humans from every possible background, location and social class. Every day people must face issues of health, safety and mortality. It is because of these daily challenges that religion continues to exist. Religion is the universal tool for explaining things which we do not understand through the context the known physical world. Although there are countless religions, each different from the other, they all serve the same purpose. Each answers questions which all humans seem to be programmed to ask: Why are we here? What happens when I die? How shall I live my life? Religion helps us to transmit our values from one generation to another, and influences the way we interact with the natural environment. It teaches us how to see ourselves in light of the universe and gives purpose and meaning to life.

What is Ocean?
Ocean is a free collection of the World's Religious literature managed by a unique book-centered research engine. It contains over 1000 books of 10 world religions in English as well as collections in six other languages French, Spanish, German, Russian, Dutch, and Portuguese If you have a slow internet connection don't despair. We will happily mail you a CD at cost anywhere on the planet! Our purpose in giving away Ocean is to promote amity among religions through greater understanding. It is our belief that the actual teachings of the various religions are not so different as some people would have us believe. True, religions have been used by power-hungry leaders as a tool to divide people. But eventually people will get tired of formulaes of hate and begin to ask "what do the scriptures really say What they will find is shocking: the core message of all the world's religious writings is the same: ethical integrity, honesty, sincerity, compassion, tolerance and non-violence. No kidding! It's hard to accept this in a world filled with "religious" bigotry and hatred but just look for yourself! Enjoy Ocean, share it freely. If you appreciate our project, help out by spreading the word. If you have a web-page, feel free to add the Ocean button which will direct people straight to this page.

The essence of any religion lies solely in the answer to the question: why do I exist, and what is my relationship to the infinite universe that surrounds me? .. It is impossible for there to be a person with no religion (i.e. without any kind of relationship to the world) as it is for there to be a person without a heart. He may not know that he has a religion, just as a person may not know that he has a heart, but it is no more possible for a person to exist without a religion than without a heart. ( Leo Tolstoy The principles are very simple, comprehensible and uncomplicated. They are as follows:
that there is a God who is the origin of everything;
that there is an element of this divine origin in every person, which he can diminish or increase through his way of living;
that in order for someone to increase this source he must suppress his passions and increase the love within himself;
that the practical means of achieving this consist in doing to others as you would wish to do to you.

Divine Digest
At some stage in life, we ask ourselves this question... What is Religion? Religion can be described in many different ways. If we really concentrate, the answers come from deep within us, such as... What is the purpose of or lives? What is our final destiny?
What is the difference between right and wrong?
What are one's obligations to the other people? To some of us religion is belief in a superhuman power or powers to be obeyed, and worshipped, as the creator or the ruler of the universe. However the more orthodox people in society refer to religion as a specific system of belief, or simple worship, often involving a code of ethics. Priests and other heads of religious orders believe that religion is a the state, or way of life of a person in a monastic order. Even more conservative sects believe that religion is any object that is seriously or zealously pursued. Certain methodistic orders believe that religion is basically an observation of devotion, piety, and discipline, according to their individual customs and rules and regulations. However, basically, everywhere in the world man, to whichever religion he belonged, looked to a prophet - a religious symbol to concentrate upon. The most logical answer would be that religion is an organized system of beliefs, ceremonies, practices, and worship that centers on one supreme God or the deity. Religion gives a feeling of security to many people.

What's the difference between
Jesus and world religions?
Email article to a friend Let's take a brief look at some of the major aspects of Jesus Christ, which stand in stark contrast to what's in the world's religions.
  • God pursues a relationship with us. Have you ever been in a relationship where you were always the one who was initiating? They are tiresome and usually don't last very long. Best friends are the ones who enjoy each other so much that they invest their time equally in pursuit of that relationship. Unlike religions that try to reach their God, with Christ you see God reaching out to us. Jesus Christ said why he came: "that you might have life, and have it more abundantly." He came to give us an eternal life with him, for those who will believe in him.
    Jesus claimed to be God. No world religion's key figure claimed to be God.
    Jesus lived a perfect life and showed his deity in the miracles he performed...healing the blind, quieting a violent storm at sea, raising people from the dead, instantly providing food for thousands of people. World religions have leaders who gave interesting messages, but none of them showed their miraculous power like Jesus did. Jesus said, "Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves."

    Alphabetized

    As a service to you, my visitors, I'm providing definitions of some terms used in these pages, for the sake of clarity. Religious terms will be taken from the Oxford Dictionary of World Religions (Many of the entries in the Oxford dictionary provide a reading list of books devoted to that term). Also, the 1999 edition of Merriam-Webster's Encyclopedia of World Religions. This note will appear after definitions from the (M-W EWR) . Links are provided to this page whenever a defined term is used in the text. There's a note to this effect on the index page. Wherever you see an asterisk immediately before a term, it means that the term is also included in this list of words. There are many terms here that do not appear in my journals, which are provided for comparative reasons. Sacred texts refered to here are collected on their own page.
    This collection of terms and people includes personages throughout history and the world in my lifetime that have influenced or impacted me. I would not be what I have become in my fifty-some years were it not for the beliefs and practices of those varied and sundry people I have met. I hope you find this service informative and useful. The buttons below take you to that letter in the listings.

    Islam
    There are three monotheistic religions in the world, religions that teach that there is only one God: Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. The term "Islam" means "submission" to the will of God, and the person who submits is called a "Muslim." The founder of Islam is Muhammad, who was born in 570 A.D. At age 40 he claimed to begin receiving revelations from a spirit being he believed was the angel Gabriel. These later were recorded and became the Qur'an, Islam's holy book. There are Six Articles of Faith that all Muslims hold to. The first is that "there is no God but Allah." The second Article of Faith is belief in a hierarchy of angels, of which the archangel Gabriel is the highest. Each Muslim is assigned two angels, one to record his good deeds and the other to record the bad deeds. At the bottom of the angelic hierarchy are the jinn, from which we get the word "genie." They are a Muslim version of demons. The third Article of Faith is belief in 104 holy books, with the Koran as the final revelation. The fourth is belief in the prophets. According to the Qur'an, God has sent a prophet to every nation to preach the message that there is only one God. 124,000 prophets have been sent, most of them unknown but some of them biblical characters, including Jesus. Muhammed, though, is the prophet for all times, the "Seal of the Prophets."

    This Southern Nazarene University course deals with the beliefs and practices of the religions (other than Christianity) of our world. It is similar to those courses sometimes titled Comparative Religions. This course will give students an understanding of religions such as Animism (including Wiccan), Buddhism Hinduism Islam Judaism , and others. During the semester , we will utilize not only written materials and lectures by the professor, but also videos and appearances by guest speakers from those religions. Fortunately, for the purposes of this course, we have some great resources in the Oklahoma City area:
    • Baha'i Faith, 1201 S Blackwelder, (405) 631-7490 Buddhist temples in Oklahoma City
      • Giac Quang Temple, 516 SE 17 (Vietnamese), (405) 636-1845
