41. World Religions In Art
An introduction to five major world religions, accompanied by photos of religious objects that are works of art. From the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
http://www.artsmia.org/world-religions/
The diverse collections of The Minneapolis Institute of Arts include thousands of works of art that were made for worship or religious ritual. Historically, people have lavished the finest materials and workmanship on those things that represented their most deeply held beliefs. The works of art included here were selected because they illustrate the main theological concepts of the world's major religions. The texts attempt to provide concise overviews and are intended to serve as comparative teaching resources. Each entry was reviewed by a knowledgeable practitioner and/or ordained clergy of that faith.

The Topic:
Religions of the World Easier - Religion is belief in a supreme being or beings; belief in God or gods. Religion is a belief system that is practiced through faith, obedience, prayer, and worship. Harder - People practice religion for many reasons. Some follow a religion because its part of their family or tribal heritage and culture. For others, religion provides a feeling of security because the divine power is believed to be watching over them. Some follow a religion because it promises salvation and happiness or a chance to improve themselves in another life after death. For other people, religion yields a sense of individual fulfillment and provides meaning to life. Finally, many people follow their religion to enjoy a sense of kinship with fellow believers. For many people, religion is an organized system of beliefs, ceremonies, practices, and worship involving one supreme God or Deity. Other peoples' religions involve a number of different gods. Some people's religion has no specific God or gods to be worshiped. There are also people who practice their religious beliefs in their own personal way, largely independent of organized religion. But almost all people who follow some form of religion believe that a supreme being created the world and influences their lives.

World religions on the Web: A guide to some of the most helpful sites
June 2002
Vol. 63 No. 6 by John Jaeger
This can be a particular problem when searching in the area of world religions because the terrain is often unfamiliar, and it can be difficult to know when bias is presented in materials. During times of political tensions, such as the current ones in the Middle East, these kinds of issues particularly come to the forefront. Subtle bias also can appear in sites due to insular or missionary zeal.
Web guides are useful in just these kinds of situations. They can help pull out from the abundance of sites on the Web the ones that are most helpful and most balanced in approach. This Web guide covers several main areas: world religion sites, specific religion sites, religious text sites, historical research sites, reference resource sites, and electronic journals. Major world religions
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Major world religions have been distinguished from minor religions using a variety of methods, though any such division naturally reflects a particular bias, since many adherents of a religion are likely to consider their own faith "major". Two methods are mentioned in this article, number of adherents and the definitions used by classical scholars of religions. For a list of all religions, please see the article List of religions

edit
Defined by population
One way to define a major religion is by the number of current adherents. Population numbers by religion are computed by combination of census reports and population surveys (in countries where religion data is not collected in census, for example USA or France ), but results can vary widely depending on the way questions are phrased, the definitions of religion used, and the bias of the agencies or organizations conducting the survey. Informal or unorganized religions are especially difficult to count. Comparing/Contrasting Major World Religions edit
All religions or belief systems by number of adherents
This listing does not draw distinctions between organized religion, which has a single belief code and religious hierarchies, and informal religions, such as Chinese traditional religions, which are a mix of different folk religious ideas.

http://www.greatdreams.com/religin3.htm
W O R L D R E L I G I O N S by JAMES HASKINS submitted by Astalea Religion is like the fashion. One man wears his doublet slashed, another lace, another plain; but every man has a doublet. So every man has his religion. We differ about trimming. John Seldon, Table-Talk: Religion (a. 1654) INTRODUCTION Who am I? Why was I born? Does my life have a purpose? Does the world have a purpose? When I die will I no longer exist? What is the meaning of it all? Man has asked these questions almost from the beginning of his history, and for just about as long he has looked to religion for answers to these questions. It is hard to define religion. Ten different people will give ten different meanings. For one person, religion is a complete way of life, determining what he eats, who his friends are, whom he marries, even his daily schedule. For another, religion means going to church or synagogue or temple and observing religious holidays. For another, religion is simply a way of living in the world; for another it is a belief in God. For still another, it is not a belief in God but a feeling of oneness with the universe. And for some, religion is just something practiced by other people, something that other people need to provide meaning for their lives. Even those who would not call themselves religious agree that religion has played an important role in man's history. It has given mankind some of its greatest heroes and some of its greatest tragedies. The history of religion, like the history of man, is one of love and pride and joy and sorrow and paid and greed. As long as man survives, so will religion.

Welcome to InterFaith Online
The Harvard Pluralism Project
Interfaith On-Line, featuring "Asheville’s Spiritual Odyssey," began during the 1998-1999 school year in conjunction with an affiliate partner grant from Harvard University’s "Pluralism Project." Dr. Jeanne Matthews Sommer, a Religious Studies faculty member at Warren Wilson College, received the grant in the spring of 1998. The purpose of the grant was to explore the religious diversity which exists in the Asheville/Buncombe county region. Under the direction of Dr. Sommer, nearly forty students have engaged in experiential research projects on a variety of world religions which are represented in Asheville. Student research has been conducted through three different courses: two sections of "World Religions in Asheville: Field Research," and one section of "America’s Alternative Religions." Each student in the two, semester long "World Religions" classes was required to choose a particular religion and conduct extensive experiential research (eight site visits and/or interviews) and text-based research. Each student developed a particular thesis which was of personal interest and for the purpose of writing a twenty page research paper. S/he also gathered basic demographic information from which to create various templates for each religion. Students in the course "America’s Alternative Religions" did less extensive experiential research (one site visit and one interview) in addition to text based research which culminated in a ten page paper.

Every Day God: Messages from the Divine
by David Hose and Takeko Hose Synopsis:

Every Day God recounts the dialogues Takeko and David have engaged in with God for eight years. To them, God is akin to a warm and caring parent eager to nurture and love every child unconditionally. At this point it is worthwhile to introduce the various religions and their scriptures which are included in this anthology. We will proceed, geographically, from West to East.
Judaism and Christianity Both Judaism and Christianity no longer practice the scriptural laws of animal sacrifices. But while for Judaism the mitzvot, the ethical and ritual commandments of the Bible, remain normative, and are elaborated in the Talmud as the halakah or requirements of life, Christianity has regard only for the Bible's ethical teachingsi.e., the Ten Commandments. Christianity emphasizes faith in Jesus Christ, who gives grace, empowerment, and guidance for living the moral life.[2] Judaism teaches a life of holiness through performing mitzvot and emphasizes the importance of adhering to the Bible's standards of social justice as laid down by the Prophets. The two religions have also diverged on the meaning of the Fall of Man; Christianity affirms a doctrine of Original Sin which is not emphasized in Judaism. These deep differences extend to the way Judaism and Christianity regard their sacred writings. Judaism regards its sacred books as the complete source for all the teachings which God requires of his people for their welfare. For Christianity, the sacred books of Judaism, called the Old Testament, are taken as a preparation for the final revelation that God would make through Christa revelation that is written in the books of the New Testament.

"Sociology of the World Religions: Introduction" by Max Weber By 'world religions,' we understand the five religions or religiously determined systems of life-regulation which have known how to gather multitudes of confessors around them. The term is used here in a completely value-neutral sense. The Confucian, Hinduist, Buddhist, Christian, and Islamist religious ethics all belong to the category of world religion. A sixth religion, Judaism, will also be dealt with. It is included because it contains historical preconditions decisive for understanding Christianity and Islamism, and because of its historic and autonomous significance for the development of the modern economic ethic of the Occidenta significance, partly real and partly alleged, which has been discussed several times recently. References to other religions will be made only when they are indispensable for historical connections.
